Not a particularly well-crafted work of historical fiction but a satisfying vacation read nonetheless (and it fed my current Dutch obsession). Pictured: Chinatown, Victoria, BC
I have a major case of #KittenParalysis as I finish this book.
The setting in 17th century Netherlands was my cuppa tea, but sadly the historical aspects of this book fell flat. The dialogue was poor and sounded like the current day. One character even used the phrases “going all the way” and “in the right place for another relationship”. 🙄
I‘m glad I had such great feline company as I read my final pages!
This is like Dutch golden age fan fiction; the main character invents Delft pottery (and the teacup), meets Rembrandt and is pals with Vermeer (who admires the way she looks in that yellow jacket standing in the light...). It doesn‘t feel very ‘historical‘; among other things there‘s little sense of social status making any kind of difference. It was a quick enough read though.
Ah, I had such high hopes for this one. Having just been to Amsterdam and Delft last year I was giddy when I saw what this book was about. Unfortunately the writing was not good (and maybe that‘s to do with the translation but at the very least, it‘s a combo of both) and the story weak. So disappointed. I didn‘t hate it enough not to finish it (probably because it‘s a quick read) but I did eye-roll a lot.
I don't know what I says about me that I was super excited to start this book because I had THE perfect bookmark to go with it 😂🤓
I absolutely chose this based on the cover, but it‘s *good*.
A young widow running from her past ends up in Delft and helping develop delftware in the 1650s. Between a pick and a so-so. Full review at http://booknaround.blogspot.com/2018/06/review-midnight-blue-by-simone-van-der.h...
Historical fiction about a young woman who is a pottery painter in Delft in the 1600s. I love the heck out of this cover.
I very much enjoyed this book set in The Netherlands in the 17th century. The cover is just gorgeous it was what attracted me to the book in the first place! #books #bookcover #bookmad #lovetoread #booknerd
Book is translated from Dutch; a good if rather light plot; never the less absolutely fascinating about the development of ‘Delft Blue‘ China in the mid-1600s which swept Europe before the secret of making porcelain was discovered. Also fascinating about how people reacted to the dangers of the plague in those days. Very interesting to read. An easy book which most readers will enjoy.
Who could resist a book with this cover? #bookcover #bookaddict #bookworm #bluebooks #prettybooks
I read this novel a few months ago, but it would make an enjoyable summer vacation/beach read. Set during the Dutch Golden Age, the detailed setting and suspenseful plot kept me engaged. There were a few missteps—the plot took some unrealistic, melodramatic turns, for example. Overall, though, I'd recommend it—especially for art history fans. • Last night I read a Dutch novel and I haven't done that for a while. Ginerva is a historical novel, written by one of my favourite Dutch writers Simone van der Vlugt 😊
• It's a 14th century Italian love story like Romeo & Julia, and I liked it but there was a lot of historical incorrectness and that irritated me.. I finished it in one sit though 📖
• Also, let me introduce you to my cat Lord 😻

Newest historical novel of one of my favourite authors, what a pretty cover, can't wait to finish it!
