Oof! 😳 I really did not like this book. And I LOVE John Irving. This is the eighth of his novels that I‘ve read and I didn‘t feel any spark. I found it unnecessarily repetitive and the constant use of descriptors instead of a pronoun irritated me (“the future writer”, “the former river driver” “the Mexican house cleaner”). And I hated Ketchum. I will still keep reading Irving, you can‘t win ‘em all. This one just was not for me. Womp Womp.

Areader2 He is brilliant A Prayer For Owen Meany and Cider House Rules are my favorite 2mo
Ruthiella @Areader2 Those are definitely my top two as well. 👍 I reread Cider House Rules a couple of years ago and it was still fantastic. 2mo
BarbaraBB I felt the same about this one. I stopped reading him after that. 2mo

Susanita Same. I tried to read this and just couldn‘t get into it. 2mo
Ruthiella @BarbaraBB @Susanita It ticked a lot of the standard Irving boxes and yet it just fell flat for me. 2mo
BarbaraBB I wonder if it‘s us or him. I used to LOVE him. Same ones @Areader2 mentions are my favorites 2mo

Another interesting read that covers multiple decades. I love Irving‘s foreshadowing.

#savvysettings #river I was going to do a birthday post on March 2nd , when John Irving turned 80!😳Got busy , anyway this one is a favorite of mine as far as his more recent titles go , deep characters & a five decade storyline. It was published in 2009.

Eggs Dramatic cover🤎🖤🤎 3y
LeahBergen He‘s 80?? 3y
Ruthiella I totally need to read his books published in this century. I stopped at A Widow For One Year and never got re-started. 😬 3y
Pip2 I loved A Prayer for Owen Meany and have been meaning to read some more of his works. He is an excellent writer. 3y

#GetMovin #river I post about Irving a lot, I have not read all his books. In fact , Owen Meany is on my #GARBingo , and loved by many here.Amongst his more recent ones , this one is a favorite.Sometimes violent , spans 5 generations ,and has more of Irving‘s “tone” if you will, that I loved in Garp,Hotel New Hampshire, and Cider House Rules. And , it‘s signed !

Cinfhen Oooh!! I‘m sold!!! #stacked and SO MUCH LOVE for Owen 7y
Centique I haven‘t read this one either but I love Owen and Garp and Ciderhouse so stacked! 😁 7y
laytonwoman3rd Twisted River was very good. 7y
ValerieAndBooks I loved Owen but just could not get through anything else I tried of Irving‘s 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7y
Leftcoastzen @ValerieAndBooks It‘s odd you should mention that. I like so many of his books ,I‘m afraid to read Owen, which gets so much love. (edited) 7y

When you know what's going to happen to a character and you have to close the book because you think that if you don't read it you can somehow prevent it from happening...

I expected so much of this one. I used to love Irving but lost track of his novels after Owen Meany.
But then I heard so much praise for this book and remembering how I enjoyed Irving, I dived in.
And now I am a bit disappointed. He is still a great storyteller but I think he used too many pages to tell this story and, more important, none of the 3 main characters (the cook, his best friend and his son) is as memorable as Owen Meany or Garp.

QuintusMarcus You are so right on Irving: I loved him but stopped reading after the one after Meany (can't recall title). He just got so tiresome. 7y
BarbaraBB @QuintusMarcus I am glad I'm not the only one disappointed! 7y

Time to go home. After visiting a last highlight, the Panama Canal, I am leaving Latin America with pain in my heart. Tonight we are flying back to Holland.
I am looking forward though to many hours in the airplane with this easy-read!

MicheleinPhilly I loved that book. 7y
BarbaraBB @MicheleinPhilly I am a hundred pages in and think I will too! 7y

Many of you will probably see skyscrapers all the time but for me as a European (living in Amsterdam which is more like a dollhouse) it is always exciting to see so many of them. This is the view from my hotelroom in Panama City where they keep distracting me from getting into my #currentread. A last stop-over before we fly back to the dollhouse tomorrow 😢..

LauraBeth Beautiful view! 7y

My list for April reading is short:

Dinner at the homesick restaurant
The Bonesetter's Daughter
The Comfort of Strangers
Paper Towns
Last Night in Twisted River

3 ebooks and 2 paper. It was a good month, though - my affection is roughly tied between LNITR, TBS and PT.

I refused to read any John Irving for years because I really hated Until I find you. But a few months ago, I read and enjoyed The Fourth Hand, and the past few weeks I've been reading Last Night in Twisted River in the evenings on Kindle. How lovely and moving. Not Owen Meany, but a special novel nevertheless.

BarbaraJean I have yet to read John Irving, though I've been meaning to for ages! One of my roommates in grad school went through a heavy Irving phase, and he's been on my list since then. I need to crack open the Owen Meany that's on my shelf! 8y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook Owen Meany is really so beautiful. Another favourite of mine is Son of the Circus. You won't regret it I'm sure! 8y

One of my all-time favorite authors. Hearing him read this book was a true pleasure that I always remember fondly. Although it didn't end up being one of my favorites of his, hearing his voice captivated me into the world of the novel. #signedsundays

2016 was an amazing reading year for me! I set a goal of reading 50 books, and rounded out the year at 104. I'm a mom of 2 young boys and also work full time outside of the house, so I am very proud of this accomplishment! These are books that have stuck with me and I will likely read them again in the future. I'm a complete sucker for John Irving and couldn't pick just 1 :) What were your favorite reads of 2016? Here's to a new year of reading!

DGRachel I like that cover for The Road. Cormac McCarthy is one of my favorite authors. 8y

Hooray! Work is sending me to Portsmouth NH and Kittery ME in November - my favorite place during my favorite season. Celebrating with some New England fiction

mauveandrosysky Both amazing places! I live in Boston so I'm fortunate to be close to both areas. Nothing better than New England in the fall. 🍂 8y
Ericmanciniwriter @mauveandrosysky seriously. I live in RI (not far) but Portsmouth still seems more new englandy to me. 8y
Zelma Very cool! ❤️ New England. Vermont was always our dream place to live. 8y

John Irving just does it for me, every time. I'm looking forward to reading more of his lesser known works this year.
