The most provocative debut novel of the year, "a dizzying satire" (The New Yorker) that "boldly turns history on its head" (Elle). What if the history of the transatlantic slave trade had been reversed and Africans had enslaved Europeans? How would that have changed the ways that people justified their inhuman behavior? How would it inform our cultural attitudes and the insidious racism that still lingers today? We see this tragicomic world turned upside down through the eyes of Doris, an Englishwoman enslaved and taken to the New World, movingly recounting experiences of tremendous hardship and the dreams of the people she has left behind, all while journeying toward an escape into freedom. A poignant and dramatic story grounded in provocative ideas, Blonde Roots is a genuinely original, profoundly imaginative novel.

Doris (a white woman) was minding her own business in her sleepy English cottage when she was kidnapped, shipped off and sold into slavery to serve Black people.

This book takes all the justifications for slavery and racism and by turning them onto white people along with a slice of satire and silliness, really shows how ridiculous (and arrogant) us whites are.

I liked this, but I'd hoped to love it.

We all know the story about the slave trade, but what if it had been different? What if Africans had discovered the New World and forced Europeans into slavery? This is that story. Doris is playing hide and seek with her sisters when she‘s kidnapped and taking to this new country. All she can think about is returning to her family back in England.

Librarybelle What an interesting storyline! I‘ve not heard of this book. 1y
AnneCecilie @Librarybelle I think it might be one of Evaristo‘s lesser known books, but I‘m reading my way through her backlist ever since Girl, Woman, Other won the Booker. 1y

Their feet were clad too, in objects called boots which were made of animal hide. They rode tightly up the leg to the knee, for some unfathomable reason.
Some, though, wore the foot objects called shoes, made of either animal hide or even stranger - wood. What crazed mind conjured up that idea?

This book started off really good, but dragged in the middle and the ending was just sort of meh. I think it‘s a fascinating concept and is a great example of what if and the general rule that all humans are evil.
In a world where Africa is the continent of advanced technology and the slave trade is reversed, follow the life of a slave girl from England.
2/5 stars parts are really well written and engaging, but a lot of the book is very slow.

Although it took me WAY longer than I'd have liked, I really enjoyed this book. The ending was a bit unsatisfying for me, but overall, a great read.

I had to come back to correct my earlier post - this isn't actually about Indigenous people in Canada! I'm still going to read it, but just didn't want people to be misled by my last post which references how and why I chose this book.

Alright guys, my next read is up. This is the first book I thought of switching to from Catch-22 (but I ultimately landed on Big Little Lies). In the height of the BLM movement last year and everyone being more open about racial issues, I decided to try and read more about Indigenous people and their history in Canada. I bought the book but haven't gotten around to reading it until now! #bookfourof2021

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

I hope everyone has a wonderful February and enjoys celebrating Black History Month in the US and around the world, and LGBTQ+ history month in the UK! Because of pandemic brain fog I‘m struggling a bit with planning my reading but this is the top of my list to read next by a Black British author finally getting the recognition she deserves the last few years

1. Warm, but with a nice breeze. Perfect weather for a book in the shade.
2. Tent! I love camping, being in nature, and especially cooking over a campfire.
3. I only read Blonde Roots this month and I would not like to be any of those characters.
4. Same as every morning - coffee and reading. But perhaps with the added benefit of homemade pancakes!

I found this book to be really challenging in regards to thinking about what slavery would have been like if the shoe had been on the other foot and it was white people who were enslaved. What would our society look like now? How would that have played out, would we have had our own form of Jim Crow laws in the US? This book was thought provoking and interesting. Highly recommend.

So I've read the first 50 pages and I am intrigued. This story is a switch about what would it be like if white people were enslaved by Africans.

My hair matches my book cover 😂! I'm on book 4 for the month and having a hard time sticking with it. One because Marlon James' book is now in my hands and two because it is taking a minute for it to get going. This book serves triple purposes. It is for #ReadingBlackout this month. It is helping me in reading more of what I already own. And it will help me check off the alternative history task for #ReadHarder. (cont. in comments)

My #ReadingBlackout stack 😁😍. Also not pictured are a few digital reads (audiobooks and graphic novels). I think I bit off more than I can chew, but if I don't get through them all this month I'll carry them over to March... though another challenge is brewing for next month too 😅. #BlackHistoryMonth

kaysworld1 Hello there I have a question I have 3 books l want to read and 2 of them are about 2 amazing coloured ladies but written by 2 white author's are allowed? I'm new to this lol 🙂 7y
LitDrivenGirl @kaysworld1 no worries! Personally I wanted to follow the challenge because it is about prioritizing black authors in our TBR piles. The challenge isn't strict and can be changed to your personal preferences. However, I would encourage the structure because there are so many good books to be found 😁. I had 1 or 2 that were about & not by & decided they could wait it out since I wanted to stick with the original challenge. Again you be decide😉! 7y
LitDrivenGirl @kaysworld1 also feel free to go to the library. I know I original said books from your own shelves, but I "cheated" for one of mine because I couldn't leave it behind ?. 7y

I picked this one up in a 5 books for Q9 charity shop haul. I approach it with a bit of trepidation, as it is a reimagining of the transatlantic slave trade in which white Europeans are the ones enslaved.

The author is from British and Nigerian backgrounds, and The Guardian called it a "clever satirical novel".

And the cover art is pretty darn cool.

merelybookish Cover is amazing! 7y
monkeygirlsmama Hope it's a good one. The cover sure is cool if nothing else. 🙃 7y
