Drink Before the War
Drink Before the War | Dennis Lehane
11 posts | 53 read | 11 to read
As richly complex and brutal as the terrain it depicts, here is the mesmerizing, darkly original novel that heralded the arrival of Dennis Lehane, the master of the new noir and introduced Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro, his smart and tough private investigators weaned on the blue-collar streets of Dorchester.A cabal of powerful Boston politicians is willing to pay Kenzie and Gennaro big money for a seemingly small job: to find a missing cleaning woman who stole some secret documents. As Kenzie and Gennaro learn, however, this crime is no ordinary theft. It's about justice, about right and wrong. But in Boston, finding the truth isn't just a dirty business . . . it's deadly."

I'm still not sure how to feel about a white man writing about black topics. And how could I as a white person possibly be able to judge? But still, I loved the atmosphere in this book. It's all dark, very dark, and comes with a lot of triggers warnings. It comes with racism, it comes with alcohol, it comes with sexism. It's an uncomfortable book, but that's Lehane writing here.

Amiable @Cuilin I loved Trixie so much I tried to get my family to start calling me Trixie when I was about 11. It didn‘t work. 😄 9mo

Amiable @Cuilin Also? The first couple of books in Louise Penny‘s Three Pines series are ok. Keep going. It‘s when she starts to create a narrative arc that runs through the series as a whole (independent of the individual mystery in each book) that it really takes off. IMO, anyway. 9mo
Cuilin @Amiable ok, thanks for that info. I‘ll push through. 9mo
dabbe I started with Penny's 3rd book, A FATAL GRACE (for the holidays). I just ordered 1 and 2, and my sister is going to give me the others. I love him and the world Penny has created. I've never heard of #1 (on the TBR), and OMG Trixie Belden! 🤩 Thanks for playing! ❤️💜🩷 9mo

#20Series20Days Day 16

My #Top20Series list wouldn‘t be complete without Lehane‘s Patrick Kenzie & Angela Gennaro series. It‘s only 6 books but wow is it a great read. Kenzie & Gennaro are private investigators from, as the blurbs say, “blue collar” Boston & the city makes for a fabulous backdrop. What really works is the relationship between the two friends & how it plays out as their detective work gets more dangerous.

@Andrew65

andrew61 A great choice, i loved this series and think they may deserve a reread as it is so long ago that i read them. 4y

I love dennis lehane and this book was sooo good. The action and the suspense! These private investigators do so much work and sacrifice but you can tell they love what they do. Lets just say it was good and i cant wait to read the second book.

This first entry in the Kenzie/Gennaro series was both more violent and morally complex than I expected and is a thriller rather thsn a mystery. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Still a solid read. I've come back to this plenty of times and not regretted any re-reads yet :-)
