An Amazon Canada Best Book of the Year, the American debut of an award-winning Irish writer that brings to life Emily Dickinson and will enthrall fans of "Longbourn "and "Mrs. Poe" Nuala O Connor s enchanting American debut novel, "Miss Emily," reimagines the private life of Emily Dickinson, one of America s most beloved poets, through her own voice and through the eyes of her family s Irish maid. Eighteen-year-old Ada Concannon has just been hired by the respected but eccentric Dickinson family of Amherst, Massachusetts. Despite their difference in age and the upstairs-downstairs divide, Ada strikes up a deep friendship with Miss Emily, the gifted elder daughter living a spinster s life at home. But Emily s passion for words begins to dominate her life. She will wear only white and avoids the world outside the Dickinson homestead. When Ada s safety and reputation are threatened, however, Emily must face down her own demons in order to help her friend, with shocking consequences."

#teachersoflitsy
Three days back at work-no students until next week. So many changes: classroom changes to create freshman, sophomore, etc. clusters; hybrid planning, co teaching more classes to service students, PD on Covid, SEL, etc. etc. my head is spinning. I can only imagine how parents are feeling! Hence 2 very different books for my scattered brain. Both books #blameitonlitsy

Libby1 I liked Miss Emily. Enjoy! 4y
Scochrane26 My area started today-virtual learning. It was an interesting day. One of my clients was having a meltdown, but I think my others were ok. 4y
Butterfinger @Scochrane26 their routines are gone. This was my third day of teaching virtually. I was so afraid it would be hard to build a community, but I started knowing their voices and quirks today. I'd still rather have them physically. It's tough, but doable. I'll be thinking of both of you. 4y

merelybookish Good luck! It's pretty uncertain for everyone. 4y
kspenmoll @Scochrane26 Thanks for your support. It helps hearing how other teachers beyond my district are doing.Hope all goes well for you. We have to be flexible & have grit!!! 4y
kspenmoll @Butterfinger It sounds like you are off to a good start! I really can‘t wait to see the students, masks and all. They are putting up glass shields at our desks- on the one hand will it help? But such a physical barrier feels not quite right to me. So much to get used to. Stay in touch!!! 4y
kspenmoll @merelybookish Thanks! Our governor has done a good job & our numbers are low but still... it‘s so challenging for parents. 4y

I was thinking of books for #booked2019 prompts & for #irishauthor I wanted to go w a female writer. Only a couple of names (Maeve Binchy, Tana French) immediately came to mind so I decided to put google to work. Of course after I came up w these eight, I‘ve found even more. Who are your favourite Irish women writers?
A good resource: https://www.irishtimes.com/culture/books/women-writers

Cinfhen Thanks for sharing this list!!! 6y

“Yes, words summon me to the sacramental, unsullied place where my roaming is not halted or harnessed by others. My mind and heart are only free in solitude, and there I must dwell.”
~Nuala O'Connor, Miss Emily

I'm one-third of the way through, & absolutely enjoying this slim novel, full of elegance & integrity. It reminds me quite a bit of Longbourn by Jo Baker, which I also enjoyed. #missemily #nualaoconnor #emilydickinson #bookish #poetry

slategreyskies I had a college professor who loved Emily Dickinson. He always called her "Miss Emily." I haven't thought about him in years. This makes me smile. ? 8y
catebutler @slategreyskies I love that your professor called her Miss Emily. Isn't it interesting how we find certain authors or characters so intriguing, they become intimate acquaintances. 7y

Pickpick

I am EXTREMELY behind in Litsy posts.

I've had a bit of a reading slump as life has been getting in the way.

Since I have so much else to share I'll simply say that I liked this book.

Lynnsoprano Love the daffodils. We live on Daffodil Drive, but they don't grow in Florida. Otherwise, I'd have them everywhere. 8y
Libby1 @Lynnsoprano - I didn't know they didn't grow in Florida! I'm from Illinois originally and it amazes me just how early the Spring flowers appear in the UK. In Wales the national holiday equivalent to their St. Patrick's Day is St. David's Day which takes place on March 1. Like Patrick's shamrock, St. D's symbol was the daffodil. They always appear shortly before March 1 here. 😊 8y

Library haul!

Laalaleighh I really enjoyed the watchmaker of filligree street. It had a dreamlike quality to it. 8y
Libby1 @Laalaleighh - I couldn't pass up the beautiful cover and endpapers of this one. I don't know when I'll get round to it but I couldn't pass it by. 8y
Laalaleighh Read it when you need something that can just take you completely away from the world. That's when I did and it was such a lovely escape from reality for awhile. 8y
Libby1 @Laalaleighh - that sounds lovely. The Secret Lives of the Amir Sisters is next and then I've promised my husband I'd read Here I Am. He finished it this week and wants to talk about it with me. I have to read it soon so he won't forget anything. 🙂 8y
Laalaleighh Haha to have a husband that reads things quickly enough to discuss them. Lucky you! 8y
