Thanks for the tag @IndoorDame

I‘m going with Shakespeare for this as well.

#themedthursday

IndoorDame Good choice!!! 2y
dabbe Ooh, yeah! Thanks! 💜🤗💜 I don't know if you've ever seen the Reduced Shakespeare Company and their “version“ of OTHELLO. It's pretty funny: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0e0pOwXuo78 2y
Susanita @dabbe Funny! I saw a production at the Washington Shakespeare Theatre a few years ago. I‘d ridden into the city with my husband, who was working across the street. When I was walking to the garage, I was passed by the actors who played Othello and Iago, probably going to get a beer together! 2y
dabbe @Susanita Now THAT's awesomeness personified. 😎 2y

#MayCharacters - Manipulates: The talent of William Shakespeare is very present in my thoughts after spending much time last month revisiting several of his sonnets for National Poetry Month. Is it a wonder that when I read today‘s prompt for a character skillful at manipulation that Iago came immediately to mind?
Iago is a master at slippery words, words of flattery and his skill is made even more cunning as it is often suffused with humor.👇🏽

Eggs Excellent choice - Shakespeare characters could probably fit all these prompts 4y
LitStephanie My favorite Shakespeare tragedy. 4y

zguta I enjoyed reading Othello - lots of treachery and strong characters 4y
Nute @Eggs Isn‘t that the truth! One Shakespearean character or another probably represents either every personality trait flaw or goodness! And some representing both sides of the coin at the same time! 😆 3y
Nute @LitStephanie I go back and forth with the label of favorite Shakespeare Play. It seems to be whichever play I am dedicating time to at the moment of inquiry.🥴 Right now I am rereading Hamlet and it feels like the most brilliant thing ever written by Shakespeare.🤩 3y
Nute @zguta I agree! If one ever needs a lesson in how to pull off treacherous behavior, by all means, read Othello!😧 3y
LitStephanie @Nute I hear you on that! 3y
Eggs @Nute Agree 💯 3y

Day 3

For characters who #manipulates I choose Jago, one of the most iconic characters of all time, in my opinion 😂

Mehso-so

When General Othello passes Jago and appoints Cassio as an officer, drama and revenge follow. Jago cleverly acts upon the discontent caused by Othello‘s popularity. He mercilessly adds the poison of jealousy into Othello's happy marriage to Desdemona.

This was a hard read for me in English. I remember now there‘s a reason I never picked up Shakespeare again after finishing high school!

I was worried about reading Shakespeare after only ever reading one play around 30 years ago. This Arden edition nearly put me off even further as the introduction assumed a LOT of prior knowledge but once I started on the play itself I was pleasantly surprised. I found it quite easy to read and actually enjoyed it. I may even try some more Shakespeare!

Palimpsest I really like the Folger Shakespeare editions. It‘s what my Shakespeare class professor used for his students. They have great intros and on the opposite page of dialogue includes notes on antiquated meanings of words. 5y
squirrelbrain Those editions sound more useful for a Shakespeare beginner like me @Palimpsest - thank you! 5y
Librarybelle I forgot about this one‘s connection to Cyprus! Good choice! 5y

A very theatrical tragedy from Shakespeare. I do feel like they were shouting at eachother the entire time but it was a very enjoyable book.
"I saw‘t not, thought it not, it harmed not me." I love this quote, it's so true ❤

Lynnsoprano This has a special place in my heart because my graduate research was on Verdi‘s Otello. He essentially ditched Shakespeare‘s first act for the opera, and the story still works. 5y
suzie.reads @Lynnsoprano I can't believe I have only just read it 5y

Audio gardening today. (I had a terrible mess going on - ‘before‘ is in the bottom.) Thank you, @mariaku21 , for recommending the production of Othello with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ewan McGregor, and Kelly Reilly on Audible. It is exquisite! And it made my task easier to accomplish. 🌱 📚 🎧

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Wow! Looks lovely! 5y

OMG!
Ewan McGregor as Iago was a fantastic choice and one that I applauded over and over again every time his voice came across my earbuds as you hear through his voice the conspiracy and jealousy that drives the character to take the actions he does. And Chiwetel Ejiofor as Othello...oh the range of emotions he renders from the words is equally enticing and plays well into Iago as the story goes along.

Ericalambbrown Awwwww, damn!!!! Where did you find this glorious adaptation? 😍 5y
mariaku21 @Ericalambbrown I was able to download it through Audiofile Magazine's summer program and i think it's also on Audible 5y
Ericalambbrown @mariaku21 Thank you!!! I do Audible so I will check there. Othello is probably my fave of his tragedies, so I love new adaptations with great actors 🥰 5y
