An eerie and absorbing novel following a criminal psychologist who has discovered shocking and possibly dangerous connections between a serial killer and her stepdaughter Criminal psychologist Seonkyeong receives an unexpected call one day. Yi Byeongdo, a serial killer whose gruesome murders shook the world, wants to be interviewed. Yi Byeongdo, who has refused to speak to anyone until now, asks specifically for her. Seonkyeong agrees out of curiosity. That same day Hayeong, her husband's eleven-year-old daughter from a previous marriage, shows up at their door after her grandparents, with whom she lived after her mother passed away, die in a sudden fire. Seonkyeong wants her to feel at home, but is gradually unnerved as the young girl says very little and acts strangely. At work and at home, Seonkyeong starts to unravel the pasts of the two new arrivals in her life and begins to see startling similarities. Hayeong looks at her the same way Yi Byeongdo does when he recounts the abuse he experienced as a child; Hayeong's serene expression masks a temper that she can't control. Plus, the story she tells about her grandparents' death, and her mother's before that, deeply troubles Seonkyeong. So much so that Yi Byeongdo picks up on it and starts giving her advice. Written with exquisite precision and persistent creepiness, The Only Child is psychological suspense at its very best.

Read in May. Predictable since page one. I can‘t say much without spoil the story. I didn‘t see that twist coming but maybe not a surprise for some readers. So what I liked in this book? Those psychological dark personalities dynamics description. I think author knows pretty well the correctional system but some actions were a little bit exaggerated. Slow pace. I liked it not love it. But it was okay for me. It has low rating in GR(so-so)3⭐️

I sort of still stand by my initial assessment that maybe the translation is bad, because I found the language to be super repetitive to the point that it was distracting. The story is okay, but nothing really new. I think you can skip it.

I‘m always into trying out thrillers from other countries, but I don‘t know if I‘m going to be able to listen to this whole thing. I can‘t tell if the translation is bad, or just the writing in general, but I‘ll give it a little more time.

Book 5 of #quarantinereads ! This was a creepy, character-driven Korean thriller. A little bit of Baby Teeth plus a serial killer! I‘ve read reviews that the translation is bad, but I didn‘t have a problem and quite enjoyed this book. #quaranTBR #24in48

Snuck a couple of hours in this morning with the tagged book. I‘m going to work, but with “take out only” procedures in place, I plan on reading more there! #24in48 #quarantineread #stayhome24in48

3.5⭐ This was a bit of a slow start to me, but then I really got into it. I liked this, but didn't love it. I thought he pacing was off kilter and for a short book, there were moments where nothing seemed to be happening.
But the premise certainly drew me in, and I liked the way things came together in the end. But glad this was a #libraryloot and not one I purchased.

My bf surprised me with tacos, so I thought I would take a quick break to eat and answer the #readathon opening survey questions:
1. Maine, the only one-syllable state and the only continental state bordered by only one other state.
2. Beheld by TaraShea Nesbit
3. It was popcorn but now SURPRISE TACOS!
4. One of my great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandmothers was put to death as one of the Salem witches.
5. Read more, always, lol.

GloVerdino Wow, a family connection to the witch trials! 5y

The last three hours - POOF. It went so fast! For my next pick, I chose this upcoming psychological thriller, out in February 2020, because I have heard it‘s majorly messed up. Which is my favorite flavor! How is everyone else doing out there? - @Liberty

As a bookseller, I work weekends. Thursday & Friday are my days off. This past week was exhausting, so I‘m spending today catching up on laundry and reading next to my precious cat, Tesla. THE ONLY CHILD is a total page-turner, recommended to me by my coworker Lauren. Debuts in 2020!
