On the eve of Earth’s destruction, a young scientist discovers something too precious to lose, in a story of cataclysm and hope by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Divergent trilogy.
It’s only two weeks before an asteroid turns home to dust. Though most of Earth has already been evacuated, it’s Samantha’s job to catalog plant samples for the survivors’ unknowable journey beyond. Preparing to stay behind and watch the world end, she makes a final human connection.
As certain doom hurtles nearer, the unexpected and beautiful potential for the future begins to flower.
Veronica Roth’s Ark is part of Forward, a collection of six stories of the near and far future from out-of-this-world authors. Each piece can be read or listened to in a single thought-provoking sitting.

This is a short story in one of Amazon‘s free kindle collections. I was in the mood for something quick.

I loved this! The main character is a botanist collecting and cataloging plant samples to take on an Ark ship leaving in days from Earth to a distant planet, as Earth will be devastated by an asteroid. She‘s got mixed feelings about leaving, and I was really invested for how short it was. Really liked it!

Looked through all my remaining prompts for challenges on Storygraph and this cane up for #dystopian #52bookclub2023. As it was nice & short (38 pages) & I was dreading this prompt, I thought it would do nicely as I could read it quickly & get the prompt over & done with.

It was OK? I didn't really get dystopian vibes from it.

Cinfhen Nice to cross off a prompt you‘ve been dreading 😁 1y
BarbaraBB So many reviews! You‘ve read a lot lately! 1y
Librarybelle I‘m not a fan of dystopian. It‘ll be a challenge for me to read for this prompt. 1y

jenniferw88 @Librarybelle This was nice and short. I did a lot of research into them before I committed as they're very hit and miss with me. There's also this one that I saw over on Threads, which is more like a thriller with dystopian vibes: 1y
jenniferw88 @Librarybelle oops, got my book recommendations for dystopia mixed up! The one in my previous comment has an intense dystopian world. This one is the book with dystopian themes, so not defined as one: 1y
Librarybelle Thanks for the info!!! 1y

This is the last book in this short story series I read. This one was really good. While not every story in the Forward series was a 5 star book, it's well worth reading them

This 39 page short story is part of the Forward Collection which was curated by Blake Crouch which at time of posting is available on Kindle Unlimited.

Samantha's entire life has been spent preparing for the end of the world and she is one of the last scientists on earth as everyone else has evacuated to Earth the Sequel.

I enjoyed this so much and wanted more, id love if this was a full length novel.

A short story about the end of the world...a little too short, but still bittersweet in those great sweet but melancholy ways some stories are. All that uniqueness and individuality passing away... and trying to save what you can while you can.

Another so-so review for one of the shorts in the collection. I've not read any of Roth's well-known books but this started out promisingly for me. It has a bleak, elegiac tone; suited, after all, for the imminent end of the world. I found the science-y, plant-y talk intriguing. But again this petered out with a disappointing ending. I would have liked her to go full-VanderMeer but I guess the short form was a limitation here, like for Jemisin.

Given our planet's current climate issues, this end-of-the-world scenario was probably a case of the wrong book at the wrong time for me. While I liked Samantha's relationship with Hagen, and the hope implied in her discovery, overall, I found the story kind of hard to connect with and bleak.

3 STARS | GRADE C
An interesting premise of the end of the world, unfortunately, the story focused entirely on flowers and horticulture and I personally found it boring, even for a short story. There was so much that could have been explored with this scenario. Also, the ending was rather abrupt.

I just found it to be a letdown. I read it instead of listening so perhaps it's better in audiobook form.

Amazon Original Stories-Foward Collection.

Samantha works in a greenhouse to help identify flowers and plants, hoping to get as many as possible on record, before an asteroid scheduled to collide with Earth in 2 days. Everyone else plans to escape on an ark launched from Earth into sky, but Sam has her own plan. An old fishing vessel, named Naomi.....
Great sci-fi story....apocalyptic.

🎧 free amazon audiobook! I sooo wanted to like this book but nope! It was total garbage. Maybe because the narrator sounded like a bad monotone AI or just that it felt like a crappy ripoff of Seveneves which pretty much revolves around a flower? 🤨 You might listen to this book & find a nugget of awesomeness but I did not. It was shorter than Carmilla & free so I can‘t reallllly complain. I still didn‘t like it 😉 This is book 1 of 6. ⭐️1/2

vivastory That's too bad, I will probably wait a bit to read it 5y

2.3 🌟
This was a beautiful story up until the last few pages.
It's like watching a great movie and suddenly the power just go off. Not cool 😣
