Murdered, My Sweet | Joan Lowery Nixon
post image
Mehso-so

⭐️⭐️
I LOVED Joan Lowery Nixon when I was a kid and I read a bunch of her books during my childhood, including this one. Reading it now, the nostalgia trip was kind of fun at times, but as for the actual story, this book is not one I found particularly enjoyable as an adult. The behavior of the adults in the book is totally absurd and requires way too much suspension of disbelief for me. Mystery loving kids would probably still enjoy it though ⬇️

shadowspeak17 as long as they don‘t mind that some things (technology) are very outdated.

I‘m using this for #booked2019 #FemaleDetective , and with that, I have finished Booked 2019! 🥳 Thanks so much for hosting this fun challenge @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage !

The more comics/graphic novels I read, the more I think they just aren‘t for me. 😔 As I mentioned in my review of “Hey, Kiddo” my typical reaction after finishing one is usually something along the lines of, “Mmkay... Well, I read it...” 🤷🏽‍♀️ which is basically what happened with this. I‘m honestly not sure what to say about it, I just feel pretty indifferent to it. *Sigh* Maybe someday I‘ll find one that‘ll click with me...

JenFowler Maybe they just aren't for you? I haven't been able to find any I enjoy either. 2w
Scochrane26 I‘ve had a hard time getting into any either. Have read a few for book challenges. The 2 GNs i have read—Nimona & Pumpkinheads, I have loved. 2w
Samplergal I haven‘t found any either. ❤️ 2w
Cinfhen I‘ve tried also & I just don‘t appreciate the art form. I thought the GN adaptation of Handmaid‘s Tale was ok. 2w

This was so good! There were a couple plot points I wish had been given more time, but other than that I loved this book. Amina is such a sweet character and her relationships and struggles were all so real. If you enjoy middle grade books, definitely give this one a shot.

I thought three of the six stories in this collection were great, but the other three didn‘t do much for me.
@Bookwormjillk this is on the way to you! I‘ll email you the tracking number shortly. I‘m looking forward to seeing what you all think!

Yeah... So I thought this was kind of a mess... The story felt all over the place to me, like it didn‘t know what it wanted to be. Things were set up that ended up going nowhere. Cedar got on my last nerve. The world building was practically nonexistent and left me with more questions than answers the latter of which I wouldn‘t necessarily mind except some things just seemed so out of left field and/or so implausible given the zero ⬇️

shadowspeak17 explanation they got that it took me completely out of the story. Part 2 was mildly entertaining at least, but most of the book was a slog, and by the time Part 3 rolled around I was just ready for it to end. I‘ve heard good things about Erdrich, so maybe this wasn‘t the best book of hers to start with. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Cinfhen I read a different book by her and loved it but it was bleak as hell 3w
Cinfhen I think this particular book was universally panned 3w

BarbaraTheBibliophage Good on you for slogging through. May the next read be 💯 better! 3w
shadowspeak17 @Cinfhen Maybe I‘ll try that one next. I would like to give Erdrich another shot. 2w
Cinfhen Not many people liked Shadow Tag either so maybe try a different book of hers / I think this one is meant to be good 2w

Pin is a little 💩 but somehow manages to be an endearing one. 😂 Some of his antics ended up making this book much funnier than I had expected it to be. I loved the writing, and the excellent preface (also written by Calvino) had me sold on the book before I‘d even truly started it.

One of my friends gifted me this book along with two other books by Calvino and now I‘m even more excited to get to them.

I honestly thought I would like this more, but it didn‘t quite do it for me. I do appreciate the unique way Porter chose to tell this story though, and I am interested in reading more of his work.

Ball‘s writing feels both simple and complex, and I absolutely love it. There‘s a lot to think about in this little book, but don‘t expect any real resolution to the stories told.

The Testaments | Margaret Atwood

*Sigh* #UnpopularOpinion incoming...
I wish I hadn‘t read this. I hadn‘t expected it to be anywhere near as good as The Handmaid‘s Tale, but I had hoped for better than this. It just felt cheap, like it was written to cash in on fans of the show. Parts felt very YA (which is something I usually do not like and this was no exception), I found the plot twists painfully obvious, the ending underwhelming, even the writing felt ⬇️

shadowspeak17 lackluster. I ended up rolling my eyes and saying, “Seriously?” far too often... 😔 I really wanted to like this, but in the end I found it disappointing and unnecessary.

BarbaraTheBibliophage I agree with your assessment. But, hey, at least it checks off a prompt! 2mo
Come-read-with-me @shadowspeak17 Thanks for the honest review. It‘s hard to speak so frankly in a less than positive way about a book that many people are celebrating. Great observations on your part - this book is an acquired taste for many readers. 2mo

Cinfhen I applaud your review and had very similar feelings. I‘m glad I read it because I wanted to see if this book really could live up to the hype, which for me, it did not. I also felt this was a total sell out. But good for Margaret Atwood for at least writing her own ending. 2mo
shadowspeak17 @BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m glad I‘m not alone in my opinion. 😅 Yes, just five more prompts to go! I think I might actually complete the challenge this year. 😬🤞🏽 2mo
shadowspeak17 @Come-read-with-me Thank you! I‘m really glad the people on Litsy tend to be kind when someone goes against the popular opinion on a book, otherwise I doubt I would have posted a review for this. 2mo
shadowspeak17 @Cinfhen That‘s part of the reason why I read it too, to see if it would live up to the hype. I honestly didn‘t really expect it to, so my expectations weren‘t actually that high going in. But of course I hoped to be pleasantly surprised. Yes, good for Atwood, and I‘m glad lots of people have enjoyed the ending she gave this story even though I don‘t happen to be one of them. 2mo
Cinfhen Same!!! Oh well!! 2mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen @shadowspeak17 Am I the only one scratching my head about the Booker Prize for this book? 🤔 2mo
Cinfhen Not at all @BarbaraTheBibliophage it‘s not fair to Bernadine Evaristo who actually deserved to win!!!!!! 2mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen I‘m anxious to read Evaristo‘s winning book. Sad she couldn‘t have all the glory. The judges bowed to book politics! 2mo
Cinfhen I think so @BarbaraTheBibliophage which is disappointing 2mo
shadowspeak17 @BarbaraTheBibliophage Definitely not. I don‘t get it either. I haven‘t read Evaristo‘s book, but the split prize feels like a total cop out that‘s not fair to either author. 😕 2mo
