24/6: The Power of Unplugging One Day a Week | Tiffany Shlain
13 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 13 to read
In 24/6, Tiffany Shlain explores how turning off screens one day a week can work wonders on your brain, body, and soul. Internet pioneer and renowned filmmaker Tiffany Shlain takes us on a provocative and entertaining journey through time and technology, introducing a strategy for living in our 24/7 world: turning off all screens for twenty-four hours each week. This practice, which shes done for nearly a decade with her husband and kids (sixteen and ten), has completely changed their lives, giving them more time, productivity, connection, and presence. She and her family call it Technology Shabbat. Drawn from the ancient ritual of Shabbat, living 24/6 can work for anyone from any background. With humor and wisdom, Shlain shares her story, offers lessons she has learned, and provides a blueprint for how to do it yourself. Along the way, she delves into the neuroscience, philosophy, psychology, and history of a weekly day of rest across cultures, making the case for why we need to bring this ritual back. A compelling personal story and a fascinating, far-reaching examination of the complex world weve created, 24/6 is a call to rebalance ourselves and our society.

This one hit me deeply. I‘d like to try implementing a form of this for my family, though I won‘t be getting a landline. I love the idea of filling your tech-free days with fun activities & adventures. It‘s a subject I think is crucial to follow as my kids get older.

“Connecting broadly is meaningless unless we also connect deeply.”

“When we succumb to our screens too often, we're just spinning our wheels when we could be going somewhere.”

24/6 is a Technology Shabbat. It‘s about taking a break from technology in whatever form works for you at least once a week. This is something that I‘ve been thinking of incorporating in the new year.

TheAromaofBooks I've been meaning to read this book as I've been thinking about this concept a lot. 4y
jb72 @TheAromaofBooks There were some parts that didn‘t concern me. I don‘t work anymore so that makes this easier. There was some technical information that was interesting but unnecessary in my opinion. But her suggestions and stories and ideas all were very informative and inspiring. The kid section also didn‘t apply to me as my kids are grown. 4y

Day 6 - Nature
#30daysofgratitude

I've already reviewed this book but chose to tag it for today since we are focusing on nature. Taking time away from technology and going outside is a REALLY good idea.
1) That my 20 year-old son still loves to take walks with me to talk and be together. ❤️
2) Sunsets
3) Colors - such gorgeous colors in nature!!!

@jb72

jb72 Wonderful pictures! Thank you! 4y
jdiehr Are you in Ventura?? 4y

When technology first came on the scene in wearable, carryable form I was for all of it any time, any where. But now I realize that we're giving over all of our lives to these devices and failing to connect with real humans in meaningful ways... first of those humans being connecting with oneself.

Shlain is funny and real. The book is smartly written and such a quick enjoyable read. You can take back your life from the tech.

Enough research to make a convincing argument and enough practical info to make it realistic! Not rocket science, one of those ‘does what it says on the tin‘ books, but I flew through it and was inspired enough to make a concerted effort to change the structure of my relationship with technology and reconnect with some satisfying old school pleasures.

This book is a game changer for me. I have been honoring Sabbath for a little while now, but I plan on adding no screens to my time of rest. I love that this isn't just a book that says, "I do this and it's great." It's filled with all kinds of research and ideas and truth that back up the benefits of living 24/6. This is a must-read for everyone.

Shlain presents some good arguments and practical suggestions for instituting a tech fast one day a week. I enjoyed this book more than I expected to. My family and I are using it as a starting point for discussions about how we use tech and how that supports (or doesn't support) our priorities as a family and as individuals.

My spouse pointed out the irony of my using this book as a phone stand while I scrolled through Instagram. (I have since set the phone aside and actually opened the book.)

sharread 🤣 I read it, it's actually quite good but very hard to do. 5y

Really intrigued by this - unplugging one day a week. Can‘t wait to read how it‘s impacted the authors life. #bfcr3

Crazeedi I am considering doing this on Sundays since it's a day of rest. I should rest from all distractions I'm thinking 5y
Mitch @Crazeedi thinking of doing the same - so intrigued to see how she fares! 5y

Reflecting on things I learnt through the #BFC. I‘m wondering about this as an experiment..... unplugging from everything one day a week 🤔 Thoughts?

@Blaire @nelehelen @callielafleur @Chrissyreadit @sudi @MicrobeMom @crazeedi @wanderinglynn

TalecArashi It's definitely worth a try :D 5y
Chrissyreadit Yes!!! I literally was talking to my daughter about the purpose for Shabbat and day of rest in biblical times and comparing it to today- I love the idea of no technology for 24 hours! 5y
Mitch @Chrissyreadit I think there‘s something to be said in getting some routine and boundaries back! Might give this a read (edited) 5y

JacqMac I like this idea. And more time to read! 5y
Mitch @JacqMac Win : Win! 5y
wanderinglynn It‘s an interesting idea. I have done screen-outs for hours at a time (e.g., no phones when hiking or going to dinner with friends), but never a full day. I‘d be interested to read more about the benefits she and her family experienced and what the science, of there is any, says. 5y
Soubhiville I love this idea! I‘m with @wanderinglynn in that I often leave my phone at home when I go out, but I don‘t think I ever go all day without looking at it. 5y
Mitch @Soubhiville I try to do this too - but I think more and more I‘m tempted to reduce this protected time. 🤔 5y
Suet624 Just thinking of actually going 24 hours away from a screen just made me anxious. I‘m surprised by my reactions. Clearly I need to do this. 5y
Suet624 Does this mean no audiobooks either? 5y
Blaire @Mitch @chrissyreadit ive done it off and on over the years. My mom went through phases of keeping Shabbat strictly (we‘re Jewish), and it is very nice and peaceful. A good go way to reflect and refresh. Right now I do a mini version by having a nice Shabbat dinner each Friday, and not checking email through the weekend. 5y
Mitch @Blaire Im really warming to the idea of thinking of a new ritual that creates special time (edited) 5y
Mitch @Suet624 😂 5y
Chrissyreadit @Blaire @Mitch I am thinking of how to incorporate this too. Even if it is one night a week. 5y
MicrobeMom I would love to do this. With my children I think it might be impossible. I might have to read the book. If you read let me know what you think!! ♥️♥️ 5y
Mitch @MicrobeMom Ive just ordered it - so I'll keep you posted! 5y
nelehelen That actually sounds great. Please let us know how it is! 5y
Crazeedi @Mitch I think it would be a good experience to do this, let me know if you decide, I think I'd need support! 5y
SheReadsAndWrites I'm starting it today. I've done an intentional Sabbath for a few years now and LOVE IT but I haven't ever completely unplugged. I'm eager to see how she defines that-what it looks like - and then try it. 🤓 5y
