The Forgotten Letters of Esther Durrant
The Forgotten Letters of Esther Durrant: A Novel | Kayte Nunn
15 posts | 8 read | 15 to read
A cache of unsent love letters from the 1950s is found in a suitcase on a remote island in this mysterious love story in the tradition of the novels by Kate Morton and Elizabeth Gilbert. 1951. Esther Durrant, a young mother, is committed to an isolated mental asylum by her husband. Run by a pioneering psychiatrist, the hospital is at first Esthers prison but soon surprisingly becomes her refuge. 2018. Free-spirited marine scientist Rachel Parker embarks on a research posting in the Isles of Scilly, off the Cornish coast. When a violent storm forces her to take shelter on a far-flung island, she discovers a collection of hidden love letters. Captivated by their passion and tenderness, Rachel determines to track down the intended recipient. But she has no idea of the far-reaching consequences her decision will bring. Meanwhile, in London, Eve is helping her grandmother, a renowned mountaineer, write her memoirs. When she is contacted by Rachel, it sets in motion a chain of events that threatens to reveal secrets kept buried for more than sixty years. With an arresting dual narrative that immediately captivates the reader, The Forgotten Letters of Esther Durrant is an inspirational story of the sacrifices made for love.

It was alright, filled a gap but really predictable.
I was interested in the shellshock and trauma therapy.

I'm enjoying this triple character plot, twisting between 1952 Scilly isles, London and current day Scilly isles. Not that keen on one of the female protagonists but guess she fulfils a role/need...

Esther falls into a depression when tragedy strikes. Her husband sends her to an island where a doctor takes in people to help them. Set between different times, letters are found that should have been sent to Esther 60 years ago. A love lost and found. A nice read to start the summer reading season.

This was alright. I have been reading some excellent books lately so that might be contributing to my lower rating. In some places I thought I had missed something cause the characters seemed to feel certain ways out of the blue. I also didn't really like one of the main characters 😱 ⭐⭐⭐

#BookSpin list! Number one and number ten are at the top of the pic. Tagged book is in the second stack but slipped out of the pic. I‘m new to #bookspin, but I read @TheAromaofBooks awesome explainer, and I think I‘m ready to go. I didn‘t realize I could jump in any month, so that was terrific news. I‘ll do my #bookspinbingo card next. And I‘ll look up the numbers! I deliberately avoided until my list was done and dusted.

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! Glad to have you jump in!! Just let me know if you have any questions & be sure to tag me in your reviews!! 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Welcome to the BookSpin excitement! You've got some interesting books in that pile. Good luck! 4y
MittenGirlPeach @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I‘m having great fun with it so far; very glad I decided to play this month! 4y
MittenGirlPeach @TheAromaofBooks thanks so much! Your explainer was so helpful. 4y

Thanks to #netgalley, and #HarperCollins and #WilliamMorrow for the opportunity to read and review this lovely story #TheForgottenLettersofEstherDurrant
This story is set in two eras, It's 1951 and Esther is suffering from depression and her husband takes her to an isolated island and leaves her (against her will) under the care of a psychiatrist who runs a clinic for shell shocked soldiers.
Fast forward to 2018 and we find ⬇️

Crazeedi Rachel, a research scientist leaving the south Pacific for a new position on the isolated islands off the coast of England. She never stays in one place for long, she isn't the type to open her heart to anyone. She's happy recording observations of sea life.
The 2 stories subtly intertwine when Rachel finds letters that were never sent. I enjoyed this book and definitely recommend.

About three women, 1951 Esther, and modern day Rachel and Eve, this is an engaging story about women, love, family, and the sacrifices that different generations have made both voluntarily and because of the society of the time. The characters are appealing and while it‘s sometimes slightly predictable, this is still a good read. Full review at https://booknaround.blogspot.com/2020/03/review-forgotten-letters-of-esther.html

Really good, ending is too rushed and ends abruptly and I dont think we got enough character development of Rachel (2018 timeline). But I really enjoyed it overall.

Penny_LiteraryHoarders Returning this to the library was interesting. They've set up another barrier of tables in front of the front desk with a piece of tape marking an even further distance from the tables with a sign saying Do Not Cross This Line. I had to laugh though - it just came out of me - the librarian gave me a dirty look. #COVID19BARRIER 5y

Three POV‘s, taking place in the early 1950‘s and 2018. So shocking to see how easy it was to have someone admitted to a mental asylum just a few decades ago. I guess Esther‘s husband did what he thought was necessary to help her, but his decision changed the course of so many lives. All three POV‘s were interesting, but Esther‘s was my favorite. The three stories came together so well.

Thank you William Morrow for sending this book for review 😊
