As the nineteenth century comes to a close, the illustrious Vanderbilt family dominates Newport, Rhode Island, high society. But when murder darkens a glittering affair at the Vanderbilt summer home, reporter Emma Cross learns that sometimes the actions of the cream of society can curdle one's blood. . . Newport, Rhode Island, August 1895: She may be a less well-heeled relation, but as second cousin to millionaire patriarch Cornelius Vanderbilt, twenty-one-year-old Emma Cross is on the guest list for a grand ball at the Breakers, the Vanderbilts' summer home. She also has a job to do--report on the event for the society page of the Newport Observer. But Emma observes much more than glitz and gaiety when she witnesses a murder. The victim is Cornelius Vanderbilt's financial secretary, who plunges off a balcony faster than falling stock prices. Emma's black sheep brother Brady is found in Cornelius's bedroom passed out next to a bottle of bourbon and stolen plans for a new railroad line. Brady has barely come to before the police have arrested him for the murder. But Emma is sure someone is trying to railroad her brother and resolves to find the real killer at any cost. . .

First book in A Gilded Newport Mystery series featuring Emma Vanderbilt Cross, an independent relation of the famous Vanderbilts. I hadn‘t planned on reading this right now but the historical setting sucked me in. I wish there had been more about Emma‘s job as a newspaper reporter.

emz711 Is it atmospheric? Or does it have a lot of the architecture of the Breakers? I loved seeing it! 2y

“She awoke that morning to an angry sea battering the edges of the promontory, and gusting winds that kicked up a spray to rattle against her bedroom windows.”

I really enjoyed this first in the Gilded Newport mystery series. While the language is more modern than late 19th century, the glamour of The Breakers, and the characters in this book are great. Emma is strong and independent and very willing to clash against a woman‘s typical role in the 19th century. I‘m anxious to read the next in the series!

Book Three for #14Books14Weeks , and I‘ve finally read another book for #ReadingUSA2019 , set in RI.

I‘d give this a solid okay rating. If it wasn‘t for main characters making bad choices, some mysteries would never be solved, and she made a bunch of them. I loved the setting though!

I noticed I used this for a prompt over a year ago...haha!

Everything Newport is #MoneyMoneyMoney , especially in the Gilded Age, when anyone who was anyone summered there. This is a mystery series set in that time; the Breakers is one of the ginormous mansions (or “cottages”) you can tour today. Such opulence! #ABBAinAugust

Mdargusch I like the sound of this one as long as it‘s not too fluffy! 6y
Librarybelle @Mdargusch I have yet to read it, but it is probably a cozy mystery. 6y
Laughterhp When I was in high school we went on field trips to tour some of the mansions in Newport. I like the cliff walk, where you can walk by all the mansions on one side, ocean on the other. 6y

Finished this very pleasant cozy mystery set in Newport during the Gilded Age. MC is a poor relation of the Vanderbilts, so while she does attend one big social event, the book is focused on her more everyday life as a middle-class Newport resident. It‘s a good cozy mystery with a spunky heroine, but not an Edith Wharton-type glitzy novel. Still recommend.

I‘m enjoying this, but I keep getting distracted down Wikipedia rabbit holes looking up stories about the people mentioned in the book. I am fascinated by the high society of the Gilded Age.

A mystery series set during the Gilded Age in Newport, Rhode Island? Yes, please! It's a #cruelsummer for residents at The Breakers, one of the mammoth summer homes for the wealthy, as someone falls to their death. The police suspect foul play. This is the first in the Gilded Newport Mystery series. #JuneTunz

Jess_Read_This #TakeMyMoney... definitely stacking this one! 😍 7y
Librarybelle Hope you enjoy, @Jess_Read_This ! 7y

Mehso-so

This started out strong then puttered out midway through. The heroine was almost willfully blind to what was going on. It was incredibly frustrating. The setting was awesome, however, and I enjoyed the inclusion of historical people as characters. I'll try the next one and hope for the best, but probably not soon.

Bateman escorted me upstairs to the loggia, where I found Aunt Alice tucked against the pillows of a chaise lounge, staring out at the bright blue vista of sky and sea beyond the property. (wish we could post in landscape. It's a spectacular view.)

Starting this one that I bought AT The Breakers. My updates will probably include a lot of pictures of the mansion and rooms. I'm really excited for this one since I've actually been in the setting which is not something that happens often. 😃😃 Also get to use my handy dandy Breakers bookmark!

LeahBergen I LOVE that bookmark! I collect those leather ones on my travels. 😀 7y
MrBook Ooh! I've been there! It's so marvelous, isn't it? 😁👍🏻 7y
CoveredInRust @LeahBergen It's really nice. I wish I'd gotten one for The Elms since we also visited it. 7y

CoveredInRust @MrBook It is! Although, I must say, I prefer the look of The Elms. It wasn't quite as opulent but it was lovely nonetheless. 7y
WhatDeeReads Love the bookmark! This sounds like a Gatsby story. Rich people doing lots of bad things. Sometimes those make me ragey. 7y
CoveredInRust @Lucky_Ladee It's set a bit before that. It's more Agatha Christie than Fitzgerald, I think. I hope. I enjoyed Gatsby but I'm in no mood for that sort of story at the moment. And the bookmark is probably my favorite that I own. 😃 7y
megt It's been far too long since I took a trip to The Breakers (or any of the Newport sites for that matter). I'll have to plan a visit soon! 7y
