The Herd
The Herd | Andrea Bartz
When an exclusive New York women's workspace is rocked by the mysterious disappearance of its enigmatic founder, two sisters must uncover the haunting truth before they lose their friendships, their careers--maybe even their lives. The name of the elite, women-only coworking space stretches across the wall behind the check-in desk: THE HERD, the H-E-R always in purple. In-the-know New Yorkers crawl over each other to apply for membership to this community that prides itself on mentorship and empowerment. Among the hopefuls is Katie Bradley, who's just returned from the Midwest after a stint of book research blew up in her face. Luckily, Katie has an "in," thanks to her sister Hana, an original Herder and the best friend of Eleanor Walsh, its charismatic founder. Eleanor is a queen among The Herd's sun-filled rooms, admired and quietly feared, even as she strives to be warm and approachable. As head of PR, Hana is working around the clock in preparation for a huge announcement from Eleanor--one that would change the trajectory of The Herd forever. Though Katie loves her sister's crew, she secretly hopes she's found her next book subject in Eleanor, who's brilliant, trailblazing--and extremely private. Then, on the night of the glitzy Herd news conference, Eleanor vanishes without a trace. Everybody has a theory about what made Eleanor run, but when the police suspect foul play, everyone is a suspect: Eleanor's husband, other Herders, the men's rights groups that have had it out for The Herd since its launch--even Eleanor's closest friends. As Hana struggles to figure out what her friend was hiding and Katie chases the story of her life, the sisters must face down the secrets they're keeping from each other--and confront just how dangerous it can be when women's perfect veneers start to crack, crumble, and then fall away all together.

Technically, it is a holiday story. The peak of tension on Christmas Eve Eve.

A story of #girlboss, pinkwashed cutthroat corporate culture. 4 friends, the secrets they are keeping for each other and from each other come to a head after one goes missing ahead of a big business announcement. As they try to get through tragedy, more secrets come to light.

Bartz wonderfully uses layers & tension to hook you.

Trying to pick a book I think I can finish before #Wintergames2021 instead of doing anything I‘m supposed to be doing really.

5/5 for this one! I loved this twisty thriller. I went in a bit blind and was pleasantly surprised. I was pulled in from the start and interested the whole time. I definitely recommend this one!

Breathtakingly chilling. Literally finished The Herd in one day; I could not put it down. Secrets. Lies. Half-truths. Twisted together and then pulled apart in this fantastic murder mystery.

I did not love this. I had a hard time figuring out which sister was talking, they sort of melded together. I think the biggest bummer for me was that this was marketed as this mystery set in a female-centric club, which okay, but then with this aggressive patriarchy Antiherd angle, except it‘s not really a big part of the story. And the mentions of diversity and being lgbtq+ friendly seemed a bit like an afterthought. Not my cup of 🍵

To be honest, I‘m just not super invested but 3/4 way through so I will finish. When is it too late to call? Usually if I s as m bailing I try not to read more than about 40-50 pages but here I am, 239 in so I‘ll push through. Maybe the ending will blow my mind 🤷🏼‍♀️

ChaoticMissAdventures Sometimes when this happens to me I read the last chapter, see how I feel and with go back and relax the gap or (gasp!) read the chapters backwards. Unconventional, maybe a bit silly, but if I feel like I am over it I have too big if a TBR pile to waste time! 3y
Reviewsbylola If I was that far along, I‘d probably skim. Which I hate doing but I also hate bailing when I‘ve already invested so much time. 3y
Reagan @ChaoticMissAdventures 😲 wow! Reading the chapter backwards!? I‘m interested. @Reviewsbylola I‘m definitely skimming a bit. I made some progress last night but I need this off my plate. 3y

Lucy approved of this book by aggressively rubbing her face against it, so that‘s good enough for me! Bookish Bingo has been a great motivator this month even though it has been more library books and less tbr. Already planning next months! Now back to this cat approved book 🐈‍⬛

Enjoyed this off the beaten path psychological thriller. At the heart are two sisters and their friends, one of whom is the head of a start up empire. #audiobook

I was surprised by how much I ended up loving this book! I'm picky with psychological thrillers and have not liked most of the ones I have read. This was my first time reading a feminist psychological thriller. I enjoyed that there were 4 main female characters and not one fit the cliche of a drunk, unreliable character. I loved the 2 distinct perspectives. I have never read any other book like this. It would make a great movie or show!

This worked a lot better for me than the previous Bartz I‘ve read, but I understand other reviewers complaints that it is very millennial themed.

Maybe too millennial for my taste. Didn't pull me in.. Too much social media and the like. I didn't love it and I didn't find it easy to finish. It was just okay.

The Herd is a feminist, female-only coworking space in Brooklyn, highly prized by successful working women and pilloried by some men. Suddenly, a woman from The Herd disappears. This is an enjoyable mystery with good twists and one very good fake out. I thoroughly enjoyed it and read it in two sittings. Lots of fun.

Nute Sounds sooo good! 4y

This book was a struggle to get through. None of these characters were likable, the plot extremely unorganized and unrealistic. I forced myself to finish in the hopes that it would somehow lead to a good ending but it fell flat. 😫

Bailedbailed

I‘m officially bailing on page 75. It‘s the first Once Upon A Bookclub book I‘ve bailed on. It may be a good book for someone, but it‘s definitely not for me. I haven‘t found a likeable character yet and I just don‘t want to waste my time.

I would recommend this as a satisfying (good but not great) thriller. It had an interesting premise with the company and then murder. It switches between two POV, but this is written well. I did figure out the twist, so it was a bit predictable to me.

It took me way too long to read this.

I‘m not sure what I was expecting, but what I got was a bunch of unlikeable characters and a promising, but ultimately plodding, mystery. The Herd itself put me in mind of goop, and that‘s not really a great thing for me. 😆

In the end, it just wasn‘t believable or entertaining.

Note to self: don‘t request contemporary thrillers from NetGalley when you generally don‘t like contemporary thrillers.😂

⭐️⭐️1/2

sprainedbrain Oh! But this was my #doublespin for #bookspin! 2/20 done, @TheAromaofBooks 4y
TheAromaofBooks I have really had to train myself to only request books I think I will actually like! I don't know why those other ones are so tempting! 😂 4y
HOTPock3tt I was thinking about this but will skip it now 😂 (edited) 4y
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt after our last discussion about modern thrillers, I‘m thinking you probably wouldn‘t like this one much either. 😆 4y
