The Chill
The Chill: A Novel | Scott Carson
In this terrifying thriller, a supernatural force—set in motion a century ago—threatens to devastate New York City. Far upstate, in New York’s ancient forests, a drowned village lays beneath the dark, still waters of the Chilewaukee reservoir. Early in the 20th century, the town was destroyed for the greater good: bringing water to the millions living downstate. Or at least that’s what the politicians from Manhattan insisted at the time. The local families, settled there since America’s founding, were forced from their land, but they didn’t move far, and some didn’t move at all… Now, a century later, the repercussions of human arrogance are finally making themselves known. An inspector assigned to oversee the dam, dangerously neglected for decades, witnesses something inexplicable. It turns out that more than the village was left behind in the waters of the Chill when it was abandoned. The townspeople didn’t evacuate without a fight. A dark prophecy remained, too, and the time has come for it to be fulfilled. Those who remember must ask themselves: who will be next? For sacrifices must be made. And as the dark waters begin to inexorably rise, the demand for a fresh sacrifice emerges from the deep...

A soft pick as it was entertaining but I felt like it could‘ve been great. Something was missing for me with this one but I did like that it was creepy and unsettling without using any violence or gore which I hate

I read horror, but it must 1) have an intriguing concept; 2) be well written; 3) include great characters; 4) not have gore or violence as it‘s primary premise. This book met and exceeded all my requirements. As a bonus it is written, under a pen name, by the hyper-talented Michael Koryta.

Long ago, a Reservoir project destroyed a town in upstate New York. Some chose to die rather than leave, and they‘ve been working on their revenge ever since.

Many years ago, the town of Galesburg in the Catskills was flooded to provide water downstream to New York City. But the river and its inhabitants have a long memory and a desire for vengeance. This is a compelling ghost story with strong characters. Full of genuine creepiness and very entertaining.

I‘m not sure why I finished this one. I enjoyed the ghosts and town history and liked the relationship between Aaron and his dad, but lost interest as it went on. I am disappointed Aaron‘s addiction issues were forgotten by the end. Actually Gillian‘s character / motivation didn‘t hold up either in the end. Bummer.

This book was good and could have been great, but there were some missteps. I liked the story of a town, families or the past wanting justice for wrongs. That I could get behind. I think the whole tunneling vindictive, but not aggressive ghosts was too much. They have been hard a work for centuries digging under the mountain to get justice. Hmmmmm.

Leave that out and rework a little bit and it would have been great.

As the title suggests, this is a chilling (🤣) read from start to finish! Set in New York- both upstate and the city, this thriller will have you looking at water and its sources completely differently! When a dam seems to be in peril, history and something more rises up... It is fresh, has some spooky scenes and is entertaining from start to finish! Read this on your next dark and stormy night! Thanks, #NetGalley!
