No Longer Human
No Longer Human | Junji Ito
Nothing can surpass the terror of the human psyche. Mine has been a life of much shame. I can't even guess myself what it must be to live the life of a human being. Plagued by a maddening anxiety, the terrible disconnect between his own concept of happiness and the joy of the rest of the world, Yozo Oba plays the clown in his dissolute life, holding up a mask for those around him as he spirals ever downward, locked arm-in-arm with death. Osamu Dazai's immortal?and supposedly autobiographical?work of Japanese literature, is perfectly adapted here into a manga by Junji Ito. The imagery wrenches open the text of the novel one line at a time to sublimate Yozo's mental landscape into something even more delicate and grotesque. This is the ultimate in art by Ito, proof that nothing can surpass the terror of the human psyche.

I definitely chose a doozy for getting back into manga/graphic novels. It was good though. The clerk at my bookstore told me she liked this version better than the original because of the feeling of hope at the end of a story about hopelessness. And I can definitely see that even though I didn't read the original. 3.5/5 from me. ⚠️check TWs⚠️

Manga adaptation of original novel by Osamu Dazai. I haven't read a graphic novel or manga since high school and man I chose a doozy to step back into that world. Good so far though Junji Ito, in my understanding, is one of the leading names for manga horror. ⚠️ Check your trigger warnings⚠️

This is Junji Ito‘s manga adaptation of “No Longer Human” by Osamu Dazai. The story is a semi-autobiography based on his experience with alienation and depression. The original is also considered his suicide note as him and his lover drowned themselves together shortly after the book‘s publication. Mr. Dazai‘s story accompanied by Mr. Ito‘s artwork, the story is sad yet encapsulating. If you like deep depressing stories, i‘d recommend this book.

MissYaremcio Ooo this one also looks super cool!! I was just missing the POV and how it is established. 4/6 3y

📚 my other B&N purchase from today. I love it when a dust jacket hides a beautiful hardcover! So pretty! I know it‘s another Junji Ito but it was on an end display & spoke to me. Now I have books to remove from my Amazon Book Wishlist 😁 Perfect Saturday! 🖤 Great walking weather, delicious steak dinner at The Capital Grill and book shopping!! I miss pre-covid life 🥲

Jari-chan Those look amazing! 3y
Twainy @Jari-chan and that‘s just the cover 😁 there are some color plates in the book too. 3y

I have to say this book wreaked me emotionally. I finished it in two days. This book was so good and is one of my favorite of the year. (So far) my bf told me about this one and the story behind it and man this was a good suggestion from him. If you like manga, horror and a story that will keep you hooked from the start I highly recommend this one.
