This was a really interesting book. I definitely was sucked into all the family drama and the different personalities in the book. I also really loved the setting and the way it was written. It really made me feel like I was in the story.

It‘s an emotional story which addresses sensitive topics such as sexual, physical and drug abuse as well as homelessness and poverty. Sometimes families may look “perfect” from the outside which makes looks deceiving. The Gordon family adopt Michael, a student who lost his family and was friends with Anne. Although unconventional, her parents were admired for their relaxed acceptance of people‘s differences.

Looking for a light summer read? Me, too.

This is not it, LOL.

Trigger Warning rape, gun violence, suicide, and incest.

bookandbedandtea Good grief. Based on your warning the cover does not match the inside. 🙀 4y
Well-ReadNeck @Bette Sounds like what I‘m looking for. Just put on hold at the library! 🙌🏼 4y
Librariana Aaaaaanndddd... I'm taking it back to the library - lol! I added it to our catalog just a few days ago, read the blurb, and thought it sounded intriguing. I checked it out and now have it sitting here at home doing a second quarantine before I read it. Bless you and your warning! 😊 Given the TWs, I'd say it's not for me. 4y
Bette I hope you like it. Thanks for the warnings about this one, I think I had it on a list. 📚📚📚 4y

The best word to describe my reading experience is "unsettling" but I couldn't put this book down! I love a good family drama and this one scratched that itch despite the cringey side-eye I had almost the whole way through.

The second home was an amazing story of family. 2 families. Relationships, injustice, betrayal & perceived betrayals. Self-discovery, forgiveness, &coming back to the heart of it all... Family. Sometimes an anchor can be the thing that weighs you down , pulls you under; sometimes the anchor can be the thing that steadies you & makes you strong. I loved this story & found it difficult to put it down 😁

What a debut! The Second Home pulled me in! I don't think I will ever forget the Gordons. This story was about family, life, miscommunications, & how one moment can change everything. Clancy is a fantastic author. The characters all felt so real, it's as if I truly know them. I also felt like I was right there with them, especially at their summer house at the Cape. It was so atmospheric, I could smell the tide & taste the salt in the air.

If you love stories about complicated families, Christina Clancy provides a doozy in her debut novel. She provides an intricate tale of three siblings told in multiple points of views. ***Please note, there is a trigger warning for Sexual Assault. This is written in two parts, the Gordon siblings as teenagers and then as adults.

Overall I enjoyed this one. It is actually more like two stories in one. A story about the highs and lows of family relationships...parents/children, siblings and a teenage adoption added to the mix. But there‘s also a parallel story about how outside influences on those family members (prompting misunderstandings, lies, jealousy and estrangement) takes its toll on the family dynamic. It is well written and angsty and kept my attention. 🔻

robinb It is also about how a home can feel and mean different things to individuals at different stages/phases of their lives.
My only personal issue is that I ended up not particularly liking any of the characters, the exception being the adopted son, Michael. But that‘s my take (and probably not a popular opinion).
Overall recommended. 4/5⭐️ #NetGalley @StMartinsPress

The Second Home by Christina Clancy follows the life of Ann, Poppy, and their stepbrother Michael.
“It is about second homes, second families, & second chances. Tender and compassionate, incisive & heartbreaking, The Second Home is the story of a family you'll quickly fall in love with, and won't soon forget.” ~~~~

Thank you, Netgalley, St. Martin‘s Press, & Christina Clancy for the opportunity to read this book in lieu of my honest review.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you to #NetGalley and #StMartinsPress for the advanced copy of this book.
I was pulled in to the Gordon family's life from the first few pages. The book is a well developed look at how families grow together, grow apart and all the details that produce a legacy, good and bad, through the generations.
The Gordons from Milwaukee have a summer home on the Cape. It's been in their family for generations. ⬇️

Crazeedi This story unfolds with interaction between sisters Ann and Poppy , and Michael, who was adopted (as a teenager) by their parents.
When Ann finds out she's pregnant, the family is never the same. Free spirit Poppy takes off on her own journey of self discovery , and Michael disappears. When the parents die, all Ann wants to do is sell everything and move on.
There is much to savor in this well written book. I definitely recommend
