Amazing read. Couldn‘t put it down.

Enjoyed it, historical thriller based on mission to rescue Alfred Mendl. It's emotional and engrossing you would want to know what going to happen next.

Kickass prologue 🤩 Yummy 😍

A bold career move for Andy to jump from domestic to historical thrillers was a smashing success.

It describes a mission to try and liberate one very special prisoner from the deadliest of concentration camps. His craft is razor sharp, pacing perfect, and characters well drawn.

Despite the subject matter it is not overwhelmingly dark and it deals with family and emotion very well.

Any fan of thrillers or historical fiction would enjoy it.

Now in trade paperback!

Not bad as a suspense novel, but it was not really my type of book. The audiobook is very good though. I don‘t think I would have read it if I couldn‘t listen to it while doing other things.

Loved it. Not your typical WW2 fiction. A thriller. Kept me on the edge of my seat!

The furor over this book is legit. It is a great escape read for when you feel unable to concentrate on the bickering of today's political camps. It's da bomb.

I devoured this book. Disclaimer: I am a WWII fiction and nonfiction aficionado! I will read everything and anything. Not kidding! It took a while for me to get to this title and I thought is was a taut thriller and perhaps one of the recent best researched novels of the time and place. I was transported happily as a reader and unhappily as a human being.

I cannot "put this book down." (I'm listening to it.) I have read many holocaust books, but something about this one, maybe because there is the addition of the US govt involved, and maybe because it's a mystery, or that Portugal is included...these elements for a holocaust novel are new to me and have sucked me in.

Poland. 1944. Alfred Mendl and his family are brought on a crowded train to a concentration camp after being caught trying to flee Paris with forged papers. His family is torn away from him on arrival, his life‘s work burned before his eyes. To the guards, he's just another prisoner, but in fact Mendl—a renowned physicist—holds knowledge that only two people in the world possess. And the other is already at work for the Nazi war machine.

I am in the minority with my dislike of this one, but I think it's because this is not a good fit for me, genre wise. A thriller set in the context of a concentration camp was just overwhelming for me, I think.

I have a good feeling about this one. Another historical fiction!

Two others I picked up from the library today and of course they're both WWII novels set in Paris. I really need to branch out....

Some parts were definitely formulaic, but, all in all, a really good historical thriller. Different from other books I have read by Andrew Gross. Imagine someone breaking INTO Auschwitz to break OUT with a scientist that might help the Allies win the war.

On my maybe list for August. Historical thriller = interested. World War II = I'm slightly burned out. Opening line of Chapter 1i is : "The barking of the dogs was closing in on them, not far behind now."

About 50 pages in, and I don't want to put it down! Two of my favorite genres, a historical thriller!

This book was everything to me. I couldn't stop turning the pages because I had to know how this was going to end. Drop a man (yes, that one man 😂) into Auschwitz- YES, Auschwitz to sneak out a professor that holds the key to the Atomic bomb, thereby winning the war.
