Black Hammer Volume 1
Black Hammer Volume 1 | Jeff Lemire
Once they were heroes, but the age of heroes has long since passed. Banished from existence by a multiversal crisis, the old champions of Spiral City--Abraham Slam, Golden Gail, Colonel Weird, Madame Dragonfly, and Barbalien--now lead simple lives in an idyllic, timeless farming village from which there is no escape! But as they employ all of their super abilities to free themselves from this strange purgatory, a mysterious stranger works to bring them back into action for one last adventure! Collects "Black Hammer" #1-#6. The first chapter in Jeff Lemire ("The Underwater Welder, The Complete Essex County, Animal Man") and Dean Ormston's ("Lucifer") acclaimed series!

I have somehow skirted all of Jeff Lemire's work, but that is about to change. My girlfriend has been going on about Descenders, and I didn't even know they were written by the same guy until after reading this & doing some research. Very cool spin on a lot of superhero tropes. Beautiful art that reminds me of Mignola. Looking forward to more!

vivastory He is ridiculously prolific. Descenders is one of my favorites of all time. 5y

This was pretty great! I liked how the superheroes felt familiar, but were unique in their own rights. And the mystery of how they got to wherever they are is keeping me hooked.

Another great recommendation. This first volume details origin stories for the characters interspersed with scenes from the present. Knocked out of their superhero universe, the cast of heroes find themselves in a small town...somewhere—one they can‘t leave—trying to cope with all the changes. It‘s a story about family, particularly those we construct, isolation & longing, identity, secrets, &, at least one, what the what the WHAT?!!? moment.

Since I‘m on something of a roll with graphic novels, I‘m going to start the last of the new comics I came home with Thursday. Another Chicago Comics recommendation, this one marks Lemire‘s creation of a new world of superheroes...or so I am told. As much as I read comics, I don‘t typically do superheroes but CC hasn‘t steered me wrong yet. (Still lurking in the back of my mind is which book I might be able to read after, which will hold its own?)

TricksyTails I really enjoyed this! 🖤 7y

I‘m not big on superhero comics, somewhat for the art style, and while this didn‘t super change my mind I still really enjoyed it. It is a complex tale of a rag-tag group of superheroes who get stranded on a farm, possibly in another dimension, after having come together in their home of Spiral City to defeat the Big Bad. There was a boom and now they‘re stuck. All of their back stories are interesting, complicated, and sad. Good start!

MarriedtoMrT I thought this was a #blameitonlitsy but I can‘t find anyone to attribute it to. If it was you, thank you! 7y

When your robot friend gets offended. Don't hide your family...no matter how weird or screwed up they are. Secrets are bad.

Secrets are bad. Black Hammer is good. A group of superheroes stuck in a farm town where they can't escape and remain incognito ( the best they can). Were they banished from Spiral City? Are they trapped in another dimension? Omg ????

Black Hammer might be my favourite book right now. Golden Age superheroes deconstructed and appropriated with a sort of Sandman vibe. #NewComicsDay

Jeff Lemire is an amazing writer. I love Descender and Black Hammer is just as good. It's about a group of superheroes who are marooned on a farm in a small town and they can't escape. Excellent comic, it kind of reminds me of a less nihilistic version of Watchmen. 🔨🔨🔨🔨🔨/5
