Making Habits, Breaking Habits
Making Habits, Breaking Habits: Why We Do Things, Why We Don't, and How to Make Any Change Stick | Jeremy Dean
14 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
Say you want to start going to the gym or practicing a musical instrument. How long should it take before you stop having to force it and start doing it automatically? The surprising answers are found in Making Habits, Breaking Habits, a psychologists popular examination of one of the most powerful and under-appreciated processes in the mind. Although people like to think that they are in control, much of human behavior occurs without any decision-making or conscious thought. Drawing on hundreds of fascinating studies, psychologist Jeremy Dean busts the myths to finally explain why seemingly easy habits, like eating an apple a day, can be surprisingly difficult to form, and how to take charge of your brains natural autopilot to make any change stick. Witty and intriguing, Making Habits, Breaking Habits shows how behavior is more than just a product of what you think. It is possible to bend your habits to your willand be happier, more creative, and more productive.

Thank you @wanderinglynn for running this challenge again! #bfc

Idk how much I can get outside during the next few weeks as british policy is very changeable right now and I may end up having to move back in with my parents for a while so I‘m steering clear of goals that require going outside.

- 20 books
- Focus on meditation, yoga and mindful eating

These are al habits I‘ve tried to cultivate but fallen by the wayside. Time to start again!

wanderinglynn Because of the potential to be quarantined is why I made it focus on habits instead of what we did previously. So glad you‘re joining us! 💜 4y

hermyknee I‘ve already done this one! Thanks for the tag - I have a very specific spot on my sofa for reading as well... any time I get up my dogs will try to take it! 😂 6y
VanChocStrawberry @hermyknee whoops! I see that now. My dog steals my spot, too, then moves when she sees me coming back...or pretends to be asleep. 😂 6y
Trashcanman I'm one of those people you want to throw stale biscuits at that folds the upper corner of the page. 6y

1. Gazebo, when it's warm.
2. Bookmark(s).
3. Whenever.
4. Yep.
5. Music. Never TV.
6. Several.
7. Everywhere!
8. Silently.
9. I read in order.
10. I try not to BREAK spines because it makes books tough to reread, but I have zero investment in keeping my books looking brand new. CREASED paperback spines are a sign the book's been put to its intended use. I do remove hc dust covers so they won't get ragged, though.
11. When I'm moved to.

TheKidUpstairs I remove dust covers while reading, too. I find they get annoying! 6y
TK421 If I don't remove the dust cover then I end up using the front flap as a bookmark. 6y
silentrequiem I'm jealous of your reading gazebo. 6y
