I love when one book brings you to another. Collapse has a chapter on the Greenland Norse (the book is about why societies fail or survive), and then I realized Cold Earth is about archaeologists in a Viking settlement in Greenland. So I had to bump it up the list. Both books from my shelves, and Collapse was sent to me on an early book swap here - apologies I can't remember who sent it, but thank you.

TrishB Oh this sounds good! 12mo

JamieArc I read Cold Earth earlier this year. It was my first Moss book and I really enjoyed it. Understated and atmospheric - my favorite elements to have in fiction. 12mo
rachaich Cold Earth was brilliant, as are all of her books, though they are all vastly different:) 12mo
Hooked_on_books I love a good fiction/NF pairing! 12mo

I have been slowly collecting Sarah Moss books for the past few years, attracted to their premises. I finally dove in for #Booked2023 about a pandemic, and it did not disappoint! A group of people in Greenland on a dig at the start of a global pandemic, this tells the story of what happened as technology failed, with no communication to the outside world, no knowledge of how the pandemic is spreading. Is anyone even alive? Cont. ⬇️

JamieArc Tensions rise, food dwindles, and as something seems to be haunting (hunting?) them, paranoia ensues. Atmospheric, I couldn‘t put it down during the first half. Then the story fell a little flat before picking up at the end. I really look forward to more books by Moss. 1y

I‘ve been drawn to Moss‘ books for a few years and slowly collecting them, but had yet to read one until I started this one for #Booked2023 About a pandemic. It‘s wonderfully atmospheric and creepy, and with my dog barking in the middle of the night lately, and my spouse leaving for a week, it‘s necessary to sneak in daytime reading for it 😂🧟‍♂️
Edited to add: I can‘t put it down! Looks like I‘ll just have a creepy night 🫣😂

sarahbarnes I will be adding this to my TBR immediately! 1y
TheLudicReader You had me at creepy. 1y
JamieArc @sarahbarnes @TheLudicReader The story ended up stalling a little bit (the creepy factor didn‘t escalate as much as I thought it would), but still really recommend it. 1y

Flippin eck! That was a bit brilliant! And her debut... in complete awe.
The characters, the narrative, the setting, the spookiness and hints of a pandemic.
Just superb.

JamieArc Currently reading this and the creepy vibe is perfect. So curious where the story is going to go… 1y

My first shift in a charity shop and I found this Sarah Moss book, the only one by her I've not read 📖.
Started it this afternoon and am enthralled.
Spooky stuff, written in 2009 and chronicles a pandemic...

Bookbuyingaddict I never ever come across her books in charity shop ! Your sooo lucky she‘s a wonderful writer isn‘t she 1y
rachaich @Karons1 she's brilliant. Absolutely amazed by this one. 1y

The first book of my final 😢 Book Depository order has arrived! I‘ve really liked the books I‘ve read from Moss and much of her backlist is not available in the US, so I picked up several. I‘m perplexed that this found me before my BOTM box despite this order being placed to the UK after BOTM shipped. (Which is why I have once again cancelled botm. 🤷🏼‍♀️)

Cinfhen I feel ya!!!! 2y
Hooked_on_books @Cinfhen The shipping for botm is bizarre! Last month and again this month, it takes a week and arrives in Vegas. Two days later, it‘s in Illinois (um, wrong direction!), then takes another week to hit San Fran. Then another week to Honolulu. Then a day or two to me. Why not go straight to SF and skip the rest of the travel? It‘s frankly not worth the carbon footprint. 2y
Cinfhen Agreed! I FINALLY after 7 years cancelled my BOTM subscription- I can get the books digitally or on audio for the same price and no hassle 2y

I love everything that Sarah Miss writes, so I went back and found this earlier novel. Greenland, an archaeological dig, a pandemic starting back in “civilization”. A chilling and oddly terrifying novel. A truly great read.

Sarah Moss has rapidly become one of my favourite writers + going back to one of her earliest novels only reinforced that feeling. Six diverse individuals set camp in Greenland for an archaeological dig but discover that the world is beset by a global pandemic (written in 2009). The story is haunted by ghosts ,personal tension ,starvation ,cold, and paranoia to create the perfect setting for wonderfully evocative and intelligent writing.

Cathythoughts That‘s saying a lot … one of your favourites, I did like Bodies of Light , I must give her another go. 3y
batsy Great review. Your last sentence sums up all of my favourite things :) I loved Ghost Wall and I've been meaning to read the rest of her books. 3y

Andrea4 Good job! Out of the big stack I had at the beginning of October I have only 2 left but I also read a bunch of other ones I wasn't expecting to get my hands on so that's ok I think! 7y

Lovely book, but - Moss could have made more of both the ghost story line and the epidemic. None of them really reached their full potential, instead the book seemed to focus on the characters' increasing quarrelsomeness. Both Ruth and Nina were just a bit too confrontational, all the time, but it was still a great book. That cover though? I would never buy this book based on it, and it sure isn't representative for the book.

Rust and condensed milk! 😄 I think I'll absolutely love this book. I can sympathize so much with Nina and her anxieties and awkwardness, and the book manages to be witty while at the same time hinting at something unpleasant to come.

A group of archaeologists is stationed in Greenland. Because they are so isolated they become the only ones set free from a deadly and highly contagious epidemic that rages across the globe. They lose their connection to the outside world, they don‘t even now whether it still exists. Winter is coming, will they ever be picked up or is this #TheFinalCountdown ? #Rocktober

Mehso-so

Intrigued by the reviews I had such high expectations that it is perhaps not so strange that I ended up a bit disappointed. An amusing read, sure, a lot of questions without answers (what I like), the eternal judgements between Americans and Europeans, but beside these strong points a little too thin for me.

I'm torn on this one. I kind of liked it a lot. I kind of thought it was a bit all over the place. One of those. The themes and ideas behind it were brilliant (archaeologists in Greenland where there might be ghosts or monsters and their might be an apocalyptic epidemic in the rest of the world) the delivery interesting. But occasionally it all stuttered along or jarred. But overall good. I think.

LeahBergen This is pretty much how I felt about this book. I found myself thinking, "Do I like this?" and yet I couldn't put it down. Hmm... 8y
andrew61 I've not read her but i picked up'tidal zone' today at the library which has been longlisted for the wellcome book prize. 8y
MadCatRamble I've heard similar things and wasn't sure if I wanted to give it a try. Based on your thoughts, I think I will. At the very least, it sounds creepy in a lovely sort of way... 8y
