When I asked a group of girls who had been at Hatherop Castle in the 1960s whether the school had had a lab in those days they gave me a blank look. 'A laboratory?' I expanded, hoping to jog their memories. 'Oh that kind of lab!' one of them said. 'I thought you meant a Labrador.' 'The cruel teachers. The pashes on other girls. The gossip. The giggles. The awful food. The homesickness. The friendships made for life. The shivering cold. Games of lacrosse, and cricket. 'The girls' boarding school! What a ripe theme for the most observant verbal artist in our midst today - the absurdly undersung Ysenda Maxtone Graham, who has the beadiness and nosiness of the best investigative reporter, the wit of Jane Austen and a take on life which is like no one else's. This book has been my constant companion ever since it appeared' A. N. Wilson, Evening Standard 'A wonderful book' Craig Brown, Mail on Sunday

Pickpick

A snapshot of a time (1939 - 1979) and "place" (girls' boarding-schools) in Britain. Written with humour, it is a social study of its time.
Read this as my #doublespin for September.

Ruthiella Wait! That‘s not how Enid Blyton said it was! 😅 4y
KVanRead Yikes!🥺 4y
LeahBergen @TrishB @Lindy @KVanRead @Ruthiella I‘d STILL be traumatized. 😆 4y
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts I wanted to go to boarding school so badly! I think I had a very idealized vision of what it would be like. 😆 4y
Reggie Lololol 4y
LeahBergen @Reggie Right? 😂 4y
Cathythoughts To be fair we had fun times & there weren‘t any scary dolls ( lots of nuns though 🙃) ... it‘s just that I would never have sent my own children or any children ..... maybe a summer camp/ boarding school , but not a permanent way of life ... 4y
Centique 😱 Terrifying! 4y
rubyslippersreads Thanks for the nightmares. 😂 4y
Reviewsbylola This sounds interesting. I love boarding school stories so maybe this one would be a cool read. That passage reminds me of 4y
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts Scary nuns might be worse. 😆 And yes, I‘m with you. I would find it impossible to send my children off to boarding school (if I had any, that is). I DID have some magical times at summer camp though, specifically one where I went to a 10 day riding camp. I loved it! 4y
LeahBergen @Reviewsbylola Exactly! I immediately thought of that school (and creepy ass dolls) in Frozen Charlotte! 😆 4y

#BookMail part 2 (and this was a FREE one). I subscribe to the wonderful Slightly Foxed quarterly journal and this was a giveaway. This book is a journalistic social history (of sorts) of life in girls' boarding schools in Britain. The stories all look to be so personal and witty. WHY didn't my parents send me to boarding school?! I begged and they were all insulted. 🙄 #SlightlyFoxed

LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads You like boarding school stories - you may be interested in this one. 😀 7y
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen This looks really interesting. 7y

shawnmooney It's never too late!! 😘😘 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk And yet all stories of British boarding schools for boys are nightmare fuel... 7y
LeahBergen @shawnmooney I'm packing my bags. 😉 7y
LeahBergen @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Right? I think there are some pretty bleak tales in this book, too. 7y
RealLifeReading My sister and I loved to play "pretend we're at boarding school" when we were kids! Too much Enid Blyton books. 7y
LeahBergen @RealLifeReading Yes, the evil influence of Enid Blyton! Did you ever read this one? 👇🏻 I read it in Grade 3 and became obsessed. 7y
RealLifeReading No (taking notes) but all the Malory Towers and St Clare's! 7y
