Sylvia Pankhurst
Sylvia Pankhurst: Natural Born Rebel | Rachel Holmes
'It's impossible to summarise adequately a book so magnificent' Gerard DeGroot, The Times The definitive biography of Sylvia Pankhurst, a woman ahead of her times political rebel, human rights champion and radical feminist. Born into one Britain's most famous activist families, Sylvia Pankhurst was a natural rebel; a talented artist, prolific writer and newspaper editor. A free spirit and radical visionary, history placed her in the shadow of her famous mother, Emmeline, and elder sister, Christabel. Yet Sylvia Pankhurst was the most revolutionary of them all. Sylvia found her voice fighting militantly for votes for women. Her commitment to equality caused her to serve multiple sentences in Holloway prison where she was tortured. The vote was just the beginning of her lifelong defence of human rights, from her early warnings of the rise of fascism in Europe, to her campaigning against racism and championing of the liberation struggles in Africa and India. Sylvia's adventures in America, Soviet Russia, Scandinavia, Europe and East Africa made her a true internationalist. She was one of the great minds of the modern era, engaging with political giants, including Churchill, Lenin, Rosa Luxemburg, George Bernard Shaw, W.E.B. Du Bois and Haile Selassie. Her intimate life was no less controversial. The rupture between Sylvia, Emmeline and Christabel became worldwide news. Her love affair with the married Keir Hardie was one of the great political romances of the age, and she never married her life partner Silvio Corio, with whom she had a son at the age of forty-five. Acclaimed biographer Rachel Holmes interweaves the personal and political to reveal Sylvia Pankhurst as never before. This major new biography celebrates a life in resistance, painting a compelling portrait of one of the greatest unsung political figures of the twentieth century.

Pickpick

Can I give it all the picks ♥️ I even had a little cry at the end, even though she died in 1960 (I couldn‘t cry then!). Socialist, feminist, anti-racist, anti-fascist, activist for equal rights for all. She did so much. There are only 2 instances the British govt have sealed cabinet papers for 100 years and one of those was Sylvia (for the legalised torture of force feeding and their surveillance of her).
Amazing woman.

LeahBergen Lovely review! 3y
TheBookHippie I must read this! 3y

Megabooks Sounds amazing! Glad you enjoyed it! 3y
andrew61 I'm sure I heard about her on great lives. Did she spend time in Ethiopia? I would like to read this as she sounds very interesting. 3y
TrishB @andrew61 yes, Ethiopia was her massive anti-facist campaign after the Italians invaded in the 30s. She was outspoken against all colonialism. She lived her last years in Ethiopia and was given a state funeral when she died. 3y
Centique This sounds amazing Trish - great review, I definitely have to read it! 3y
TrishB @Centique I recommend for next time you want a full big read! 3y

Finishing my evening with the two Sylvia‘s.
I‘d be a lot further on in the book if I hadn‘t got lost down the internet rabbit hole so many times!!
But it‘s a brilliant read so far.

Cathythoughts I have tagged book stacked … look forward to your thoughts 3y
TrishB @Cathythoughts she‘s nearly finished now. We got side tracked by footie last night. Said she‘s enjoying it! 3y
CarolynM I liked Normal People a lot more than Conversations too @Cathythoughts I found the main character in Conversations unbearably frustrating. I was more sympathetic to the NP characters. (edited) 3y
Nute I‘m so down for that Sylvia Pankhurst book! Stacking! 3y
TrishB @Nute it‘s so good so far ♥️ all these people who made massive sacrifices to try and make a more equal society. Real heroes. 3y
