Prisoner B-3087
Prisoner B-3087 | Alan Gratz, Jack Gruener, Ruth Gruener
32 posts | 50 read | 13 to read
Survive. At any cost. 10 concentration camps. 10 different places where you are starved, tortured, and worked mercilessly. It's something no one could imagine surviving. But it is what Yanek Gruener has to face. As a Jewish boy in 1930s Poland, Yanek is at the mercy of the Nazis who have taken over. Everything he has, and everyone he loves, have been snatched brutally from him. And then Yanek himself is taken prisoner -- his arm tattooed with the words PRISONER B-3087. He is forced from one nightmarish concentration camp to another, as World War II rages all around him. He encounters evil he could have never imagined, but also sees surprising glimpses of hope amid the horror. He just barely escapes death, only to confront it again seconds later. Can Yanek make it through the terror without losing his hope, his will -- and, most of all, his sense of who he really is inside? Based on an astonishing true story.

Wonderful coming of age story centered around WWII and various concentration camps. This is a well developed and engaging story that will hook reluctant readers. If you are a teacher, add this to your library. Students will love it.

I read this alongside my 7th grader for her English class. It‘s based on the true story of Jack Gruener, a Jewish boy who survived multiple concentration camps. Quick read and super engaging. Great for ages 12-112!

The book follows a Jewish boy as he experiences the holocaust. He goes to many different camps and explains his story of what happened at those camps and his journey in those camps. You will like this book if you like books based on more true events and are a bit more gruesome. A theme in this would be determination because of how he has a will to survive and get out of there of the camps through his determination.

MissYaremcio Nicely done Luis! Thanks for doing the extra credit assignment! 6/6 4y

#2021Book2
Like all of Gratz's books, Prisoner B-3087 takes the tragedies of history and makes them accessible for modern readers, especially teenagers. In this book, he uses elements of the true story of Jack Gruener - who was imprisoned in 10 different concentration camps before being rescued by American soldiers - to teach readers about the horrors experienced by those who suffered through the Holocaust.

Right now i'm read Prisoner B-3087 and it's a really good book so far i'm really enjoying it. The Nazis just got 70000 Jews to bring them to concentration camps and the mane characters are hiding right now on the roof of a building.

My son told me I should read this. He loves all books WWII related, but this author is 1 of his favorites so far. It was an easy read and darn thing made me cry.

JillsBookshelf I love Alan Gratz‘s books as well! If he hasn‘t read them already I would recommend Allies and Refugee. Allies is about D day and Refugee features different characters from different time periods, but one character is trying to escape Germany in 1938. Happy reading! 😃 📖 4y

Just went on the best kind of neighborhood walk, the one where you arrive 🏡 with a stack of 📚!

Bottom stack from our nearby Free Little Library. Then we ran into a friend who has 3 boys a few years older than Maya, and invited her in to borrow some more books off their shelves! Our closest library is still closed for renovations, so a lot of book trading will be happening in our neighborhood this summer!

lover.of.the.classics Have you read the Librarian of Auschwitz? 6y
alisiakae @lover.of.the.classics Not yet, but we plan on reading that one together because of the mature content. She's been on a big Holocaust historical fiction kick this year. Even more so after she learned details about the concentration camp experiences on my husband's side of the family. 6y

At the bookstore, my daughter will usually show me books, I'll ask if she wants them, but she says no because she has so much school work and no time to read. Yesterday, however, she brought this to me. I asked if she wanted it, expecting a no. And she said, "yes please!" She used to be such a bookworm, so I felt that "connection" again as I happily paid for this book for her.

I can't decide whether I'm a chatty introvert or quiet extrovert, but there's something about conferences that really takes it out of me. Settling in with a glass of wine and ready to relax for a couple hours before hitting the hay in my lovely quietnoisy city apartment.

I won a signed copy of Prisoner B-3087 tonight! I've been eyeing it for a while, and after hearing Gratz talk about it this evening, I'm even more intrigued.

As you read this story, you travel along with teenage Yanek to ten different concentration camps during World War II. TEN. This is unfortunately based on a very true story. As a result, your heart is wrenched and your mind has a hard time comprehending the horrors that so many people have experienced. I visited Dachau concentration camp not too long ago, and this book brought those emotions that I felt in that quiet, dark place right back.
