Love Letters: Vita and Virginia
Love Letters: Vita and Virginia | Virginia Woolf, Vita Sackville-West
15 posts | 4 read | 1 reading | 5 to read
'I am reduced to a thing that wants Virginia. I composed a beautiful letter to you in the sleepless nightmare hours of the night, and it has all gone. I just miss you...' At a dinner party in 1922, Virginia Woolf met the renowned author, aristocrat - and sapphist - Vita Sackville-West. Virginia wrote in her diary that she didn't think much of Vita's conversation, but she did think very highly of her legs. It was to be the start of almost twenty years of flirtation, friendship, and literary collaboration. Their correspondence ended only with Virginia's death in 1941. Intimate and playful, these selected letters and diary entries allow us to hear these women's constantly changing feelings for each other in their own words. Eavesdrop on the affair that inspired Virginia to write her most fantastical novel, Orlando, and discover a relationship that - even a hundred years later - feels radical and relatable. WITH A NEW INTRODUCTION FROM ALISON BECHDEL, AUTHOR OF FUN HOME AND CREATOR OF THE BECHDEL TEST.

These letters are a delight! They show how the relationship between Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West evolved. From acquaintances, to friends, to lovers. We read about their writings, their daily struggles, their pets and of course the other people in their lives. Their travels and of course their longings. The times they missed each other, the times they spent together. How they grew together. So glad those letters were published!

One of my favorite reads in quite some time! I restricted myself to reading a year‘s worth of letters a day to try and get a sense of the actual time passing in their 20 year friendship and love affair. The window into the lives and minds of these remarkable women was so special, and the writing itself stunning!

TheBookHippie I love it too. 5 stars. 8mo

#weirdwords #weirdwordwednesday @CBee

I vote for bringing this back into common usage, it‘s just too much fun!!!!

CarolynM In Australia a “bingle” is a collision of some sort, usually a minor car accident. I didn‘t know it was hairstyle. Always good to learn something new🙂 9mo

CBee Such a fun word! But I‘ll have to look up what hairstyle a “shingle” is 🤔 9mo

IndoorDame @CarolynM that‘s actually much more fun than any of the things we say for minor car accident here 😁 9mo
IndoorDame @CBee it‘s cute! I spent lots of time looking at photos of 20s and 30s hair!😁 9mo

This is exactly why I keep putting off reading Proust! Every single time a writer I like references him they essentially say this… and yet… they all do read him, and love him at least as much as they hate him, so I still keep meaning to get to his work… eventually… #dilemma #somepartsofthecanonscareme

TheBookHippie I sit staring at my copies, maybe 2025 & 2026 😂 9mo
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie good plan! 😂 9mo
xicanti The thing about Proust is, he‘s wordy in a fun way more often than a frustrating way. There were times when I got sick of his narrator‘s crap, but for the most part I had an amazing romp through his long, long novel. 9mo

IndoorDame @xicanti that‘s encouraging, thanks! 9mo
Graywacke Proust creates something with those winding sentences. Definitely worth reading. Just carry your patience along with you 9mo

I don‘t know if they ever actually take a #RomanticGetaway because I‘m only in the 3rd year of their 20 year correspondence, but Vita has already tried to entice Virginia away twice… even though her health makes travel difficult Virginia has gone to stay at Vita‘s house, so maybe a trip further afield is in the cards at some point… #luckyinlove @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

#LoveLetter #LuckyInLove @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Not sure if romance actually counts as a season since I almost never read seasonally in February, but I felt motivated to pull this off the shelf yesterday. Loving it so far!

My nonfiction book last month was the above book. I found the introduction very helpful and informative. I didn't really know that much about the women. I did know more about Virginia Woolf though. I am keen to read their books now. I like books in letter format, but sometimes I got a bit overwhelmed with the amount of letters.
