"Consent" is a Molotov cocktail, flung at the face of the French establishment, a work of dazzling, highly controlled fury...By every conceivable metric, her book is a triumph." -- The New York Times Already an international literary sensation, an intimate and powerful memoir of a young French teenage girl's relationship with a famous, much older male writer--a universal #MeToo story of power, manipulation, trauma, recovery, and resiliency that exposes the hypocrisy of a culture that has allowed the sexual abuse of minors to occur unchecked.Sometimes, all it takes is a single voice to shatter the silence of complicity.Thirty years ago, Vanessa Springora was the teenage muse of one of the country's most celebrated writers, a footnote in the narrative of a very influential man in the French literary world. At the end of 2019, as women around the world began to speak out, Vanessa, now in her forties and the director of one of France's leading publishing houses, decided to reclaim her own story, offering her perspective of those events sharply known.Consent is the story of one precocious young girl's stolen adolescence. Devastating in its honesty, Vanessa's painstakingly memoir lays bare the cultural attitudes and circumstances that made it possible for a thirteen-year-old girl to become involved with a fifty-year-old man who happened to be a notable writer. As she recalls the events of her childhood and her seduction by one of her country's most notable writers, Vanessa reflects on the ways in which this disturbing relationship changed and affected her as she grew older.Drawing parallels between children's fairy tales and French history and her personal life, Vanessa offers an intimate and absorbing look at the meaning of love and consent and the toll of trauma and the power of healing in women's lives. Ultimately, she offers a forceful indictment of a chauvinistic literary world that has for too long accepted and helped perpetuate gender inequality and the exploitation and sexual abuse of children. Translated from the French by Natasha Lehrer...One of the belated truths that emerges from [Consent] is that Springora is a writer. [...]Her sentences gleam like metal; each chapter snaps shut with the clean brutality of a latch. -- The New YorkerConsent [is] rapier-sharp, written with restraint, elegance and brevity. -- The Times (London)[Consent] has something steely in its heart, and it departs from the typical American memoir of childhood abuse in exhilarating ways. -- SlateLucid and nuanced...[Consent] will speak to trauma survivors everywhere. -- Los Angeles Review of Books"A piercing memoir about the sexually abusive relationship she endured at age 14 with a 50-year-old writer...This chilling account will linger with readers long after the last page is turned." -- Publishers Weekly Springora's lucid account is a commanding discussion of sexual abuse and victimization, and a powerful act of reclamation. -- BooklistA chilling story of child abuse and the sophisticated Parisians who looked the other way...[Springora] is an elegant and perceptive writer. -- Kirkus

#AdventRecommends December 11th

Vanessa Springoro writes about a sexual relationship she had with a nearly 50 yr old man when she was 13 yr. Not only was he a lot older than her, he was also a famous French author. This book changed French law after it was published.

Megabooks This was really interesting and sad. 1y

At the age of 14 Vanessa was in a sexual relationship with a 50 yr old man. Even at the time she heard that he was a pedophile but she didn‘t have the language at the time to understand what that was. In this memoir she looks back on that relationship and it‘s effects. Because this man wasn‘t just 50 yr old, he is also a well known author in France who used his relationships in his fiction and published his diaries.

An exceptionally moving, and indeed confronting memoir of childhood sexual abuse. What I found most horrifying about Springora's experience was the extent to which the adults in her lives colluded to support the toxic hold her abuser had over her. This collusion has far reaching tentacles, not just parents and friends, but teachers and educational institutions, and even the wider French literary community.

EvieBee What a great review. I need to check the library asap. 2y
ClairesReads @EvieBee thank you! It really is an excellent book. Hope you enjoy it! 2y

CoverToCoverGirl A spot on review! It especially boggles my mind still that her mother knew what was happening and basically did NOTHING! 🤢🤮 2y

Not a book I would easily recommend - to me, it was gruesome and disturbing at moments - but I am glad Vanessa Springora brought her story to light.

Really upsetting! Much admiration for Vanessa Springora for taking ownership of her story and calling out the terrible abuse she underwent from the many adults surrounding her. Utterly shocking. Very disturbing. #Scribd #audio

TrishB I‘ll put on my one day/maybe list. Just reading about it when it hit the news was shocking enough. 3y

A truly disturbing #nonfiction book about a 14 year old girl lured into a relationship with serial pedophile. This book was a bestseller in France, where it blew open the door to pedophilia and sexual assault in French intellectual circles. The acts this man committed were shocking, and his victims were forced to relive their trauma as he published novelizations and even diaries using their real names. TW in spoiler tag. ⬇️

Crazeedi Sounds very intense and very sad 3y
Megabooks While most of the assault takes place off the page, the man raped both boys and girls, including trips to the Philippines to buy boys and girls for orgies. Yes, he openly published diaries with this. There is also medical sexual assault, disordered eating, and suicidal ideation. (And by boys and girls, I mean kids 14 and under!) added: he also stalked her. (edited) 3y
Megabooks @Crazeedi it really was. 3y

Crazeedi @Megabooks your synopsis sounds horrific 💔 3y
Butterfinger How awful. 3y
Megabooks @Butterfinger this man was truly a monster, and I was shocked how many household-name French intellectuals supported removing any age of consent laws in France, and the age of consent was already only 15. I‘m glad the tide is turning there. 3y
allureofbeauty Adding this to my tbr (edited) 3y
Megabooks @allureofbeauty I hope you find it as meaningful as I did. 3y
SconsinBookyBadger I had to google news on the author. I was diappointed, but not shocked by the prominent names who supported this monster. 3y
Megabooks @AnansiGirl I googled it as well. I mean Proust, Derrida - huge names that supported (at one point at least) sex with children. Shocking and disappointing. 3y
Cinfhen Oh god! This sounds horrid 💔 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen it was truly awful!! 3y

This is a blame it on @Chelsea.Poole Somehow, I had missed all the press about this. Anyway, about halfway through and it‘s definitely really disturbing. 😬

Originally published in France, Vanessa is now a book publisher, but at fourteen in 1986, she was groomed an sexually abused by celebrated French author Gabriel Matzneff. This book brought to light an open secret of abuse of teens in the French intellectual community.

Reviewsbylola Wow, that‘s intense! How awful. 3y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola fortunately it‘s not super graphic but just knowing the things he did and that he had the audacity to novelize and publish diaries of it. I mean, he wrote whole books about going abroad to purchase underage children and no one saw this as problematic?!?!!? I mean...absolutely no shame in being a predatory pedophile. 3y
Chelsea.Poole It doesn‘t seem to have as much buzz! Glad to share the news. 😊 Definitely a much different time. And you‘re right, no shame!! 3y
Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole yeah, I saw The New Yorker published an article on it when I went looking, but I don‘t read that regularly. Gabriel is truly a monster! 3y

An excellent #memoir written by a French woman who was involved with (abused by) a man 35+ years her senior when she was 14 years old. The man was a respected French author whose work was highly regarded. His works often featured his diaries in which he recounted the abuse he inflicted upon V (the author of this book) and others. Very reminiscent of My Dark Vanessa, but it‘s nonfiction which makes it that much more heartbreaking.

24-25 Feb 2021 (audiobook)
This memoir is intelligent, angry and scathing of the French literati that allowed a middle aged writer to publicly flout sexual relations with young girls. Not only was his behaviour tolerated, his writing, which included details of relations with children well below the age of consent, was lauded. I was shocked by the calibre of philosophers who had in the 70s signed his petition to have the age of consent abolished.

I wasn't really expecting much, but OMG this book is gold ✨✨
The writing style is simple and quick to read, and the story is clear although it talks about the controversial theme of p3dophilia from the victim's point of view.
I can only hope more people start opening up about these kinds of cases and justice is done.
