'The best thriller I've ever read.' Philip Pullman Kolymsky Heights. A Siberian permafrost hell lost in endless night, the perfect setting for an underground Russian research station. It's a place so secret it doesn't officially exist; once there, the scientists are forbidden to leave. But one scientist is desperate to get a message to the outside world. So desperate, he sends a plea across the wildness to the West in order to summon the one man alive capable of achieving the impossible... 'Excellent... Kolymsky Heights is up there with The Silence of the Lambs, Casino Royale and Smiley's People.' Toby Young, Spectator 'A breathless story of fear and courage.' Daily Telegraph

I enjoyed this one but didn't LOVE it. The first 200pgs were pretty so-so, but this one reeled me in so slowly that I didn't realize I was hooked until I was blasting through the final 150pgs instead of going to bed 😂 There were some spots where the motivations/reactions didn't work for me, and this is a spy thriller, so expect the MC to be able to do things mere mortals cannot, but overall an enjoyable read - I'll probably try another of ⬇

KristiAhlers I love the whole "...mere mortals..." ? 11mo

This was actually the best reading week I've had in a while. I finished five books for a total of over 1800 pages - #JoysofJune really inspired me @Andrew65 !!! Stayed up late last night finishing the tagged book, which started SO slow, but then suddenly I couldn't put it down 😂 Started The Soulmate Equation this morning - need to get some of these shiny new books checked off and back to the library!!

@Cinfhen

Bookzombie What a great week! 11mo
Cinfhen Fabulous 🤩and you even have the new Henry 🥳🥳🥳 11mo
Andrew65 That‘s brilliant 👏👏👏 Great to hear the readathon helped your reading . 11mo
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - Yes!! I'm really looking forward to both that one and the newest Nora Roberts!!! 11mo

As someone who can't DNF a book (with the exception of Swallows & Amazons), I often find myself getting Stockholm Syndrome by the end...

As the end drew near, I found myself looking back with fondness at this farfetched crapfest in which a super-intelligent polyglot gets summoned to Siberia for not-entirely-clear reasons. The occasional glimpse of action is bracketed by paaaages of admin & unimportant detail.

⭐⭐ (Unless you LOVE transport)

Why oh why oh why do I have the kind of personality that won't let me bail 😭😭😭

This book has so far been 90% ADMIN! Nothing has happened yet to make me care about what's going on. What even IS going on?!

I suspect Philip Pullman was held at gun point when he said this was the best thriller he'd ever read.

Graywacke Maybe Pullman hasn‘t read many other thrillers. Hope it picks up (or ticks you off enough to bail soon). 2y
Bookwomble Toss it! There are too many books you will like that are waiting for you to read them. 😏📚 2y
RaeLovesToRead @Graywacke @Bookwomble Someone on Goodreads described it as "Have you ever wondered where James Bond buys his plane tickets? This is the book for you!" which made me laugh, because it's so true. I'll give it a short while longer... but it's not the thrill ride I was promised ? 2y

The_Penniless_Author Book blurbs are the great scam of the literary world. I guarantee you Philip Pullman has said that about a couple dozen different books, at least. 2y
RaeLovesToRead @The_Penniless_Author I need to obtain a degree of literary success so that I can accept backhanders to dole out praise to the highest bidder 😉 (just kidding.. I would never sacrifice my artistic integrity 😌😁) 2y
Vansa I really get what you mean, I've been slogging through a super boring book too,and just can't bring myself to bail!I'm getting better at bailing on books as I age, though 😂 2y
RaeLovesToRead @Vansa I wish I could walk away, but once I've started - if it's a book I've bought new - I just can't do it!!!! 😭😭 And I have so many amazing looking books on my shelf calling to me.... 😄 2y

It's that perfect blend of late summer clear skies and cool, fragrant autumn air. Time to start a new thriller that I've had on my shelf for years 🍂

I love this time of year. I can still enjoy an iced latte, while at the same time wrapping myself up in snuggly knitwear.

Chores can wait 😌😉

JenReadsAlot Sounds like perfection! 2y

It was a pick for the majority, then just slightly lost my interest towards the end. The detail is incredible - most books, where the protagonist has to break in somewhere, it takes a few chapters. 90% of this book is about the intricate process of getting someone in and out of a top secret base. Great locations, on merchant ships and into the Arctic, great ingenuity, and interesting characters.

jhod Nice model 😁 6y

It's all @Mitch 's fault 😊 Thanks for the tip! Cute bookshop, and I can't not support an indie. One for me, one for Mr Oryx.

DeborahSmall Love the top! Where did you find it? 💕 6y
Oryx @DeborahSmall From a shop called Books are Magic in Brooklyn. But I think you can buy online from their store too. I love it. 6y
DeborahSmall @Oryx I‘ve loads of t shirts but I‘d love a long sleeve top 6y
scripturient Love the shirt! How was Hamilton??? Did you get to raid Foyles? 😁 6y
Oryx @scripturient really good, enjoyed it lots. How was Harry? Didn't have time to get to Foyles yet! Maybe tomorrow on our way home, we might accidentally end up walking by... 6y
scripturient Harry was great. Loved the amazing stage design. 😍 Haha, accidentally walking by - I like that. 😉 We‘re hitting some bookshops tomorrow as well. I saw some lovely gadgets at Foyles that I just need to go back for. 😊 6y
Oryx @scripturient Excellent. My recommendations for bookshops if you need any (you probably know them already) are The British Library, the Wellcome Trust (if you like non fiction, science mostly), Persephone, and Goldsboro. Have a great day! 6y
Oryx @DeborahSmall Yes, I really like the long sleeve ones too. If you order one from the website, that's a medium that I got, if it helps with sizing. 😁 6y

Bought on the basis of the cover sticker announcing Philip Pullman counted it as the best thriller he'd ever read. So no way it couldn't be amazing, right? Well, I can tell why PP made the claim but it wasn't as superlative for me - imho the thrills were low level. The writing itself is very good indeed, the plot well structured and executed (if totally ludicrous), the characters well drawn, believable & likable. The scene setting is superb ... 👇

readingjedi ...very atmospheric & absorbing. Some of the action set pieces felt a little laboured - the MC is no James Bond! And the romance was predictable & stinky cheese! But certain characters/scenes/exchanges had an authenticity that was very enjoyable and rewarding. A solid, quality read. 6y

So. Randomly picked my next read from Mount ToBeRead and discover the author was born in Hull! My last read featured a quote from a Philip Larkin poem, librarian at the University of Hull, my alma mater.

I always pick my books randomly. Yet so often there is a weird/freaky/creepy/serendipitous connection between them. A name, a place, a reference, a plot point .... Strange but bizarrely satisfying.

SilversReviews Fun!! And interesting. 7y

Lionel Davidson's spy thriller is a peculiar read - essentially a Cold War story published after the collapse of the USSR it's hopelessly overwritten (every piece of research appears on the page), has a real old school taciturn hero (irresistible to women, of course) and an utterly preposterous revelation but which also builds an effective sense of tension that kept my attention until the end.

#FunFridayPhoto How about a thrilla in Siberia? This has THE very best getaway sequence I have ever read. Fantastic.
