This happens to be all the time. I read a book, then at the end of it, I find out it's part of a series. The Vanished Days is the last book in this trilogy. The first book is The Winter Sea. The second is The Firebird. Now, I am going to have to go back and read the other two and then this one, again.

I enjoyed the love story, though it wasn't a book I couldn't put down or wait to pick up.

bookandbedandtea If it helps, it's a pretty loose trilogy. I don't think reading them out of order would matter much. 1d

This was great. Kearsley does an amazing amount of research and I always feel like I'm right there with her charactors. I connected easily with both Lily and Adam. I was happy with the resolution, especially as I didn't see it coming, and I couldn't figure out how the central problem was going to be resolved.

This book is a prequel to this Scottish series so I was delighted to read this and not be confused. I am looking forward to reading more as the story has rich characters and enticing plot. The time line alternates to provide the historical aspects to which the narrator presents as he proceeds to write “the truths” from the past. I was drawn into the storyline and the various characters who all seem to have their own motives for their actions.

This was the last of Kearsley‘s books on my TBR which is rather sad. All of the historical detail I have come to love in the story and mystery surrounding one woman‘s life after she is orphaned at a young age at leaves her home. The twist didn‘t work for me at all but I otherwise enjoyed it.

I‘m feeling this one more right now than I am about returning to the library one I‘m supposed to be reading. This one is listed on the Craving CanLit site as eligible for the Giller, but these kinds of stories rarely make the Longlist. #ShadowGiller

Lindy What exactly about this novel do you think makes it the kind that‘s unlikely to make the Giller longlist? 2y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders @Lindy Susanna has commented before on this type of novel not catching the judges‘ eyes like they once long ago did. It would be the kind I would love to see but know it won‘t. I guess they feel it‘s too mainstream, too much romance perhaps. So far it‘s wonderful - it‘s my kind of story where I‘m going to be swept away by it but not the style that is typical for the Giller. 2y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders @Lindy I looked at the Craving CanLit site the other day. I feel hopeless at even trying to guess which books will end up on the Longlist. I also haven‘t been reading enough of them lately to make an informed guess. 😛😛 therefore I‘m completely anxious for this Longlist announcement! 2y
See All 6 Comments
Lindy I wondered if it might be the romance aspect, because we‘ve seen historical fiction and books set outside Canada on previous longlists. 2y
Lindy My top picks so far (out of the 23 I‘ve read): Buffalo Is the New Buffalo and My Volcano. Except My Volcano isn‘t the sort of book that makes a Giller list either (too weird). Personal Attention Roleplay and Coupland‘s Binge are in 3rd and 4th place. I have high hopes for Alexander Macleod‘s collection, as yet unread. (edited) 2y
Lindy Other possibilities for the longlist: When We Lost Our Heads; Sea of Tranquility; All the Quiet Places; This Is How We love; Dandelion; Avenue of Champions; and We Measure the Earth with Our Bodies. (edited) 2y

There were times when this book got a little bogged down in a history I was not totally familiar with, but in spite of the that I loved the strong characters and the story. It revealed the harshness of the times (imagine living in a times when the age of consent was 10). It is a story of survival, childhood, and romance and has a great twist. Although is is the third in a series, it is a prequel and easy to read as a stand alone. I gave it 4/5.

Long one of my favorite authors, I really enjoyed the latest Scottish historical fiction novel from Susanna Kearsley. Unlike many of her other books, this was more mystery than romance. But I like it just as much!

If you‘re a Diana Gabaldon fan or a historical fiction lover but you want something a little more fast paced, check this out!

Loved reading author‘s notes & worked on which characters show up in which books & the family trees.
(I need to work on my penmanship! )

tpixie @EadieB I just finished the book. Here‘s my messy list of which characters show up in her other books. Not certain if I‘ll read The Winter Sea or The Firebird, but just in case! 3y

I‘m enjoying some cozy time with the pets, a final snack of chocolate cookies, and a few more chapters of this #LitsyBookClub read before calling it a night. It‘s been a while since I read a historical fiction set in #Scotland, and I‘m thoroughly enjoying the setting.

This is historical fiction set the turmoil of Scotland around one of the Jacobite uprisings. And it‘s also about a young woman, Lily, her childhood relationships and trauma. Much of the action is told in hindsight by various narrators, and we have to sort through truth and fiction. I wanted more Lily and less historical minutiae.

Hooked_on_books Too bad it wasn‘t better, but that cover is gorgeous! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Hooked_on_books I normally love this author, so I was super excited for the ARC. Then it just dragged … as for the cover, I believe that‘s the River Clyde. Part of the story takes place in Leith, which is along its banks. 3y

Went to my local indie bookstore today and picked up my hard cover of The Vanished Days. The book sleeve is signed and has a map of old Edinburgh inside. 😍

It has finally happened! I am ordering books in my sleep! This just arrived from a bookstore in Arizona, and I swear that I did NOT order it! Never even heard of this author, but the good thing is the cover says she is a NYT and USA Today bestselling author! However, there is an enclosed receipt with my name on it, and charged to my PayPal account. 🤔🤪📚 #bookshoppinginmysleep

Tamra Well it‘s a beautiful cover anyway! 3y
ChaoticMissAdventures Did you order a different one? I have had them send me wildly different books then what I ordered the packing slip even said the name of the book sent. I just called them and they sent to right one out, didn't have me return the other either 3y
JamieArc I love this author a lot. Her books aren‘t typically stories I would be drawn to, but she builds such a strong sense of place. I haven‘t heard of this one, but I hope you like it! 3y

DivineDiana @Lindy Agree! 😅 3y
bookandbedandtea That's very strange but I'm another who really likes this author so I hope you give it a chance. 3y
DivineDiana @bookandbedandtea I will! And I may have solved the mystery. 🤔 Searched through my emails and found one from the bookstore about an online event with Diana Gabaldon interviewing the author. Missed the interview, but I must have bought a ticket which included the book. I think I was really interested in Diana Gabaldon😂 (edited) 3y
Lindy Oh! That‘s happened to me too: bought a ticket to an online author event without realizing that it included a copy of the book. Until the book showed up in my mailbox. 3y
Chrissyreadit This is one of my all time favorite authors!!! 3y
DivineDiana @Lindy Glad I‘m not alone! But I didn‘t connect because I actually bought the ticket because of the interviewer! 😂 Wish I had seen it! 🤷🏼‍♀️ (edited) 3y

I love Kearsley. I didn‘t realize that this one is a prequel to The Winter Sea (which I haven‘t read yet). Set in Scotland and told in alternating timelines (1687-1707), this story is told against the backdrop of revolution and intrigue and centers around Lily (as seen from age 7-adulthood as a widow). There‘s joy, tears, despair, danger, hope and a sweet love story here. I enjoyed this but felt like it was a bit of a slow starter compared to 🔻

robinb some of her other books. As always, her writing triggers all sorts of emotions, and I simply can‘t say enough about the AMOUNT of research and detail she includes in her stories. Characters are well-drawn, and I fell hard for Lily, Adam and Jamie. Recommended. 4.5/5⭐️ More in-depth review at https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/4244565370 (edited) 3y

Historic Scotland There is so much turmoil with politics, religion and a Union with England most don‘t want. Plus King James II is dethroned and exiled and the Jacobite movement starts. Plus the unsuccessful Darien scheme for a new colony that is a failure. The book centers on the life of Lily Graeme and her life with three different families. This book is an absolute masterpiece!
