Dark Things I Adore
Dark Things I Adore: A Novel | Katie Lattari
A debut thriller for fans of Lucy Foley and Liz Moore, Dark Things I Adore is a stunning Gone Girl-esque tale of atonement that proves that in the grasp of manipulative men, women may momentarily fall. But in the hands of fierce women, men will be brought to their knees. Three campfire secrets. Two witnesses. One dead in the trees. And the woman, thirty years later, bent on making the guilty finally pay. 1988. A group of outcasts gather at a small, prestigious arts camp nestled in the Maine woods. They're the painters: bright, hopeful, teeming with potential. But secrets and dark ambitions rise like smoke from a campfire, and the truths they tell will come back to haunt them in ways more deadly than they dreamed. 2018. Esteemed art professor Max Durant arrives at his protg's remote home to view her graduate thesis collection. He knows Audra is beautiful and brilliant. He knows being invited into her private world is a rare gift. But he doesn't know that Audra has engineered every aspect of their weekend together. Every detail, every conversation. Audra has woven the perfect web. Only Audra knows what happened that summer in 1988. Max's secret, and the dark things that followed. And even though it won't be easy, Audra knows someone must pay. A searing psychological thriller of trauma, dark academia, complicity, and revenge, Dark Things I Adore unravels the realities behind campfire legendsthe horrors that happen in the dark, the girls who become cautionary tales, and the guilty who go unpunished. Until now.

This was just ok for me - nothing was that shocking or surprising, and I really couldn‘t understand Audra going through SO MUCH over several years, for that end game. I am very happy she didn‘t hook up with Max, though 😂

Red hair occurs in the general world population at a rate of about 1-2%. In the northern hemisphere, it's more like 2-6%. Scotland has the highest rate* at 13%, and Ireland comes in second at 10%. In English-language fiction, I estimate the rate to be 35% or more.

*There's disagreement about the exact numbers, but these give the basic idea.

Ruthiella Green eyes also seem to be more prevalent in fiction than in real life in my experience. 2y
ImperfectCJ @Ruthiella Agreed! And I rarely see green eyes in real life that actually look green-green, unless they're contacts. My son has green eyes, but they pretty much look blue unless you look really close. 2y

This revenge thriller was enjoyable to read but not quite nuanced enough to make it great. My favorite aspect is how Lattari portrays the certainty one can feel in their own take on a story. Although there are many facets to any situation, it's easy to cling tenaciously to one interpretation, often the one that shows us in the best light. With this particular story I guessed the twists pretty quickly and didn't get the joy of the reveal.

One glance at the annotations I put in books (in the rare instances I annotate) will show you that I am super fun at parties. But really, this section of this book is set in June 1988, and while I can't find prescribing rates for before 1996, I don't think the prevalence of antidepressant use the author describes really kicked off until after Prozac came out, which was only in January 1988.

RaeLovesToRead Benzodiazepines used incorrectly maybe? 2y
ImperfectCJ @RaeLovesToRead I thought about that, but taken by multiple characters? And wouldn't they have been called tranquilizers or nerve pills or something other than "antidepressants"? The one character might be taking lithium, but the side effects seem more like an SSRI, which doesn't work with the timeline. I don't know why I hook into these things so much. 2y
RaeLovesToRead Yeah, you are right. Author has got their timescales mixed up! I read a book set in the Victorian era featuring a toaster. It may JUST have been invented, but no one was like "whoa whoa whoa, what is this magic new device!!!!" ? 2y

ImperfectCJ @RaeLovesToRead I would love to read a Victorian-era novel where people went nuts over a toaster! People reacting appropriately to anachronisms in general would be kind of awesome, I think. Now I'm googling "history of the toaster" instead of "selegiline pill images," so I'm making something resembling progress! 2y
RaeLovesToRead Hehe, love it... "wow, that's the best thing since sliced bread!" .... "what's sliced bread???" ????? 2y
RaeLovesToRead You can now toast bread without using your oven, but you still have to slice it yourself... 2y
RowReads1 I believe you are correct. The SSRI escitalopram/Lexapro is a little white pill. it didn‘t come out until 2002. 2y

Success! I dropped the younger kid off at a class and the tide is too high to walk on the beach, so I finally have some time to read! I brought a portable feline, too. (I can't remember who sent me this bookmark, but it's very convenient for when I'm reading but can't have an actual cat with me.)

RaeLovesToRead LOVE the bookmark! 😄 2y

I'm getting my kids ready for state honor band later this week, a task I would normally do while listening to audiobooks, but I have an earache so figured I should give my headphones a rest. Instead I'm just carrying around my book while I do laundry, label tuba stands, and help my kids stress about homework and sharing hotel rooms with teens they haven't met yet, hoping for a couple of minutes when I can sneak in some reading. 🤞

Ruthiella Good luck! 🍀 2y

Book 1/52 for 2022. Good clues as to identities and how things played out throughout the book, but plenty of twists and turns to keep me guessing. #Kindle #ebook #Libby

The creeping sense of dread that oozes from this novel is so pervasive, so successful, that there were times I needed to set it down and walk away. Beautifully crafted.

A story of individuals, linked through mundane and terrible events at the Lupine Valley Arts Collective. Everyone, everything trapped by their relationships with poor, doomed Coral.

Seasonally appropriate ✔️ Dark academia ✔️ Revenge Plot ✔️ Unexpected Twist revealed on the last page ✔️✔️
Dark Things I Adore opens up to reveal the relationship between Grad Assistant Audra & well-known art processor Max Durant. The story is revealed in an easy-to-follow dual timeline. There is some suspense & the build up to the reveal is appropriately paced. It was a really engaging book. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Note: See TW at the beginning of the novel.

Wow 🤯! I‘ve seen some hype for this one, and it‘s accurate! Her detailing kind of reminds me of Where The Crawdads Sing for some reason.. 🤔! But this is just a killer psych suspense! The ending had me wowing and lol-ing!

What a great #NetGalley wish come true! With a stunning cover, intriguing title & promising premise, I enjoyed this thriller from start to finish! Told in three perspectives, spanning the late 1980s & the present (2018), this revenge tale unfolds in the remote woods of Maine in an small artists‘ community. Readers will be satisfied to have their hunches proven correct as the tension mounts! Looking forward to more from this talented author!

I can‘t remember the last psychological fiction book that had such great writing. The characters and places were so real. I just checked this back in at the library and am shocked there isn‘t a hold on it. Hope someone snags it from our New Books shelf to start their weekend off right. Highly recommended.
