Dark academic revenge
This was just ok for me - nothing was that shocking or surprising, and I really couldn‘t understand Audra going through SO MUCH over several years, for that end game. I am very happy she didn‘t hook up with Max, though 😂
⭐️: 3/5
Red hair occurs in the general world population at a rate of about 1-2%. In the northern hemisphere, it's more like 2-6%. Scotland has the highest rate* at 13%, and Ireland comes in second at 10%. In English-language fiction, I estimate the rate to be 35% or more.
*There's disagreement about the exact numbers, but these give the basic idea.
This revenge thriller was enjoyable to read but not quite nuanced enough to make it great. My favorite aspect is how Lattari portrays the certainty one can feel in their own take on a story. Although there are many facets to any situation, it's easy to cling tenaciously to one interpretation, often the one that shows us in the best light. With this particular story I guessed the twists pretty quickly and didn't get the joy of the reveal.
One glance at the annotations I put in books (in the rare instances I annotate) will show you that I am super fun at parties. But really, this section of this book is set in June 1988, and while I can't find prescribing rates for before 1996, I don't think the prevalence of antidepressant use the author describes really kicked off until after Prozac came out, which was only in January 1988.
Success! I dropped the younger kid off at a class and the tide is too high to walk on the beach, so I finally have some time to read! I brought a portable feline, too. (I can't remember who sent me this bookmark, but it's very convenient for when I'm reading but can't have an actual cat with me.)
I'm getting my kids ready for state honor band later this week, a task I would normally do while listening to audiobooks, but I have an earache so figured I should give my headphones a rest. Instead I'm just carrying around my book while I do laundry, label tuba stands, and help my kids stress about homework and sharing hotel rooms with teens they haven't met yet, hoping for a couple of minutes when I can sneak in some reading. 🤞
The creeping sense of dread that oozes from this novel is so pervasive, so successful, that there were times I needed to set it down and walk away. Beautifully crafted.
A story of individuals, linked through mundane and terrible events at the Lupine Valley Arts Collective. Everyone, everything trapped by their relationships with poor, doomed Coral.

Thanks @Sourcebooks for sponsoring us this year!
While driving, I‘m listening to the audio, at work and reading the e-book, and at home I‘m reading the physical book! 📚 🎧 📖 📚
I've been away for a long time. Life got really hectic. I'd like to get involved in things again and not sure where to look for readathons and challenges.
New month, new book. Sorry for the late posting.

Dark Things I Adore opens up to reveal the relationship between Grad Assistant Audra & well-known art processor Max Durant. The story is revealed in an easy-to-follow dual timeline. There is some suspense & the build up to the reveal is appropriately paced. It was a really engaging book. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Note: See TW at the beginning of the novel.
Serious love for any author that has love for their readers & humanity by including this information at the BEGINNING of the book. #respect
Wow 🤯! I‘ve seen some hype for this one, and it‘s accurate! Her detailing kind of reminds me of Where The Crawdads Sing for some reason.. 🤔! But this is just a killer psych suspense! The ending had me wowing and lol-ing!
I‘m not sure I‘ve ever noticed this crucial information in the very BEGINNING of a book.. this is awesome. 👏🏻
What a great #NetGalley wish come true! With a stunning cover, intriguing title & promising premise, I enjoyed this thriller from start to finish! Told in three perspectives, spanning the late 1980s & the present (2018), this revenge tale unfolds in the remote woods of Maine in an small artists‘ community. Readers will be satisfied to have their hunches proven correct as the tension mounts! Looking forward to more from this talented author!
I can‘t remember the last psychological fiction book that had such great writing. The characters and places were so real. I just checked this back in at the library and am shocked there isn‘t a hold on it. Hope someone snags it from our New Books shelf to start their weekend off right. Highly recommended.
