10 posts | 18 read | 3 to read
On the day that shocks the world, one boy just wants to find his dad. A powerful addition to the gripping I SURVIVED series. The only thing Lucas loves more than football is his Uncle Benny, his dad's best friend at the fire department where they both work. Benny taught Lucas everything about football. So when Lucas's parents decide the sport is too dangerous and he needs to quit, Lucas has to talk to his biggest fan. So the next morning, Lucas takes the train to the city instead of the bus to school. It's a bright, beautiful day in New York. But just as Lucas arrives at his uncle's firehouse, everything changes -- and nothing will ever be the same again.

This HF, I survived book the attacks of 9/11 is such a wonderful book. I love the I survived book series, but this book in specific hits home. The book shares a different perspective of a fictional character, but still keeps the truth of the real event. This book will be great for SR and IR. Teachers can read the first couple of pages and discuss as a class or students can read it on their own.

ztorres These great resources provided not only for this book but for all the collections of I survived. Students will love working with each of the activities. 3y
DrSpalding Because this happened 20 years ago we would still consider this realistic fiction however I can see why you thought historical. Your resource is the absolute best you could identify for this wonderful series. These would be excellent books to complement your science and social studies curriculum in second, third or fourth grade. 3y

"I Survived the Attacks of September 11, 2001" (HF) by Lauren Tarshis is the 6th book in her I Survived series, which tell of important historical events from a fictional kid's perspective. Lucas is at an NYC fire station during 9/11, which changes everything. This is a good book to use for AS because Tarshis has such a successful book series as well as other works. A resource to use would be her website, www.laurentarshis.com . #lae3414sp19

dayuso1 Teachers can use UDL strategy "Optimize Access to Tools and Assistive Technology" (4.2) by allowing students to use computers and iPads to research the historical context of this book. Teachers can also use KWL charts with all students including ELLs to track what students know, want to know and ultimately learn about the historical event (ESOL 50). 5y
dayuso1 As an extension resource, teachers can show this kid-friendly overview of the events of 9/11. https://youtu.be/MTJGB5XEUkA 5y

This historical fiction (HF) would be a great IR and RA. Students that are interested in history would enjoy these books. This book could be utilized as a read aloud to inform the class about this period of time. I would use something like this in my classroom to give students factual information about this event.

This is the I survived website. It has the series of books and related facts about the event that is in each book. This would be a great resource for teachers or students to use so they could share these facts.

JordanL I myself read a I Survived book, and they are excellent. This book would be a good addition to discuss one of the darkest days in American History, as many of our students weren't alive during these events and we'll have to teach about this to the coming generations. 6y

LisaMart @kylamarie5 this is awesome, considering as future educators we will have to teach our students about 9/11 considering they were not born to experience the event. Great post, but I‘m not sure it‘s considered HF yet, since it occurred only 17 years ago. I think it‘s still RF. Not sure though! I know that I definitely want to get this book! 6y
DrSpalding Nice support for a super series! Fantastic resource! 6y

I Survived: The Attacks of September 11, 2001 is a high quality HF book that follows a boy who experiences the shock and repercussions of this tragedy. This novel might best be used for IR, this book would also be suitable for GR or even AS.

amandagrant http://www.warsaw.k12.in.us/document-library/guided-reading-lesson-plans-1/level... This link contains a guided reading lesson plan that highlights key vocabulary and includes a writing connection assignment.

UDL – 2.1 Clarify vocabulary and symbols

EL – 15. Reinforce the key ideas you present again and again

I Survived The Attacks of September 11, 2001 by Lauren Tarshis illustrated by Scott Dawson is a RF, I would use this as a PR. The book is about a boy name Lucas who is told that he is no longer able to play football, this is the most devastating thing for him at the moment, but his life is about to change in a few weeks. Lucas heads to the twin towers with his father on September 11, 2011 where they go up to the 110th floor to see the view then

HNager they head down. Within a few hours Lucas sees the first tower get hits by the plane, he is with his uncle who is a firefighter, Uncle Benny calls it in. Lucas is at the firehouse waiting for his dad. The last part of the book goes on about the first football game Lucas isn‘t playing in but he has a greater appreciation for what he does have. 6y
HNager I would use EL 42 have students use timelines to arrange the sequence of events and the UDL would be 6.3 facilitate managing information and resources. Lesson Plan: https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/educators-guid.... #ucflae3414f17 6y

I Survived: The Attacks of September 11, 2001, written by Lauren Tarshis, is a HF book, based off of true stories. The book focuses on a young boy who witnessed the tragedy of 9/11 personally. This chapter book is perfect for IR, because it teaches the student about a real event in history, using characters that they can relate to. This type of book may encourage students to look more into the history of 9/11 on their own outside of school.

KatherineBeckham The UDL strategy for this is 7.1 (optimize individual choice and autonomy). This can be done by encouraging the students to explore more in to the history of what happened on September 11th. The ESOL strategy is 1 (teach questioning for clarification). This strategy is beneficial for ESOL students who want to read the book, but are afraid of not being able to read it perfectly. Encourage them to ask any questions they have. 6y

MeghanW I love this series! It is a great way to get HF books in the classroom. It is important for students to ask questions because most of them were not alive at the time and it is important for them to know and understand these tragedies. 6y

A HF book by Lauren Tarshis about a boy named Chris Calley who takes a trip to see his uncle in New York City, when they see a jet crash into the World Trade Center. Chris tries to help his dad, who is a firefighter, to save injured citizens. This is a good book to bring up the discussion of the 9/11 attack, a permanent part of U.S history.

tfundora Looks like a very intense book and even thought the story of the character is not real it's cool to read a story about such a unforgettable experience American went throught during 911! 7y
DrSpalding Kids enjoy these books and they expose them to events that they should know about. In 2, 3, and 4 these could be used for quick literature circles! 7y
StephanieP This book is very intense! But I love how it can engage students and make them feel if they are being apart of the attack or in the same place as the character. Great book to read around 9/11! 7y
