'Thrilling and deeply moving, gorgeously written and intricately plotted, morally complex and surprising and sweeping and intimate, with some of the most indelible and heart-breaking characters I have ever encountered in a novel' Elizabeth McCracken In the smart Parisian suburb of Maisons-Larue, in the wake of the Paris 2015 terrorist attacks, an au pair is arrested after the sudden and suspicious death of her nine-year-old charge... The truth behind what happened is unravelled through six women: Geraldine, a heartbroken French teacher who struggles to connect with her vulnerable students; Lou, an incompetent au pair fired by the family next door; Charlotte, a chilly socialite and reluctant mother; Holly, an anxious au pair who yearns to feel at home in Paris; Nathalie, an isolated French teenager desperate for her mother's attention; and finally, Alena, the au pair accused of killing a child. All of them play a part in nine-year-old Julien's death... For fans of Celeste Ng's Everything I Never Told You and Liane Moriarty's Big Little Lies, The Caretakers is a compulsive and gripping read about who takes care of children, the yearning for belonging that extends beyond the homes left behind, and issues of identity, privilege, and class in both American and French culture.

At the very start, a child is dead and an au pair accused. While that central mystery frames the story, it‘s ultimately not needed, as this is an exploration of women in the community, be they mothers, daughters, or au pairs, and their lives of quiet desperation. I ultimately liked this, though the end was a bit weak. If you need to like characters, this is not the book for you. A low pick for me because of the weak ending.

This was a audio book from chirp, not really a fan of audio but I thought this one sounded good I disliked it This was a story of American au pairs in Paris, starts with a death so you think it will be interesting, but the story explains in painful descriptions of five woman involved, all of these women were broken on many levels, none had redeeming qualities,I didn‘t like one of them the story wraps up neatly but strangely

There was nothing inherently wrong with this; it is actually quite well written and offers interesting psychological portraits of all of the women. BUT, those women are all SUPREMELY miserable so it became a bit of a slog. This is also a classic case of misleading marketing because this is not a suspenseful or thrilling tale at all. I‘m glad it was a library borrow.

ClairesReads Oh good to know- I wanted to read this, but on the basis that I thought it was a suspense story. Thanks for the intel! 1y

I love a story well-told from multiple points of view. In this one we meet a Parisian suburb community of au pairs and their families in 2016. Reading the description I expected a mystery surrounding the death of a child, but I‘d say the mystery takes a backseat to the tales of the women connected to the tragedy. I was entertained from beginning to end.

Reading it was my first goal for the #AwesomeAugust Readathon!

Kammbia1 Interesting premise for a story. I might have to check this one out. Also, I will be in Paris (and Strasbourg) for vacation in about 10 days. This story might give me some local flavor. Thanks for the recommendation. 2y
PaperbackPirate Thank you @rockpools ! It‘s a beautiful location, I just had to press the button. 2y

It‘s time for an #AwesomeAugust #Readathon update.

I have been sick at home since Tuesday so I have had some extra reading time in between the naps and nose blowing. I have read 181/444 pages so far toward my goal. I‘m going for 100 pages tomorrow.

Photo taken Saturday, caught Bookstagramming by my sister in South Mountain Park in Phoenix, Arizona.

Hope you‘re crushing your goal @Andrew65 !

1. My grandmothers, mom and dad, and sisters were/are all readers, and many of my childhood friends as well. I had a neighbor friend who would sometimes just come over & read her own book while I read mine. 🤓
2. Barbara Kingsolver
3. Yes, we‘ve been together about 15 years. The Caretakers is next.

Just Ok. Six POV‘s of a group of American girls working as Au pairs in and around Paris, their teacher, a socialite mother and a kind French teacher. The writing is pretty good, and the story is well structured and paced. I just found myself a bit underwhelmed. Not even quite sure why….🤷‍♀️

What a debut... This was such a carefully crafted book from the point of view of six different women, weaving all together to create a really compelling story. I wasn't too sure if it was something I was really going to like - I wasn't looking for another Perfect Nanny but this wasn't like this at all, it revealed its secrets slowly and thoughtfully.

Library book 1/2 for #MarvellousMay

An American au pair in Paris is accused in the death of her seven-year-old charge. Did she do it or not? Six women tell their stories, which all intersect at some point with the accused. Misunderstandings and missed connections abound. I don‘t know what to make of this book. I liked but also felt “meh”. This is the first time TBH that I have a hard time writing a review since I started posting.
