Let's Not Do That Again
Let's Not Do That Again: A Novel | Grant Ginder
21 posts | 9 read | 12 to read
From Grant Ginder, the author of The People We Hate at the Wedding , comes a poignant, funny, and slyly beguiling novel about family, politics, and the lengths well go to for our children, perfect for fans of HBOs Veep and Kevin Wilsons Nothing to See Here. Nancy Harrison is running for Senate, and shes going to win, God dammit. Not that thats her slogan, although it should be. This is what shes worked so hard for over the years after her husbands untimely death (which was definitely not her fault) and inheriting his seat in the House of Representatives. Shes said all the right things. Passed all the right legislation. Chapped her lips kissing babies. Theres just one problem: her grown children. Greta and Nick Harrison are adrift. Nick, recently heartbroken, is floundering in his attempts to write a musical about the life of Joan Didion (called Hello to All That). And then theres his little sister Greta. Smart, pretty, and completely unmotivated by anything, allowing her life to pass her by like the shoppers at the Apple store where she works. But then one morning the world wakes up not to Nancy making headlines, but Greta. Shes in Paris. With extremist protestors. Throwing a bottle of champagne through a beloved bistros front window. In order to save her campaign, not to mention her daughter, Nancy and Nick must find Greta before its too late. Smart and poignant, funny and tear-jerking, Lets Not Do That Again proves that like democracy, family is a messy and fragile thing that means more than any mother, or senator, could ever dream.

Put another way: the allure of Everywhere Else is very attractive until he realizes that Everywhere Else can never surprise him like New York.

Family drama *and* politics? It‘s a bit trashy, but I‘m there for it. Read my thoughts here: https://debbybrauer.org/#lets-not-do-that-again

This book flips between hilarious and maddening/sad. 👆

That said, I‘m glad this on my #auldlangspine list! It has quite the group of characters. 😄

Sharpeipup I feel the same way by those characters which is also how I feel about politics. 1y

In honor of midterm elections, I read this book with a glance into the drama in a political family.

I recommend both it and early voting. 🗳

LeslieO I read it. And I voted. 😁💙 1y

I was hoping #BookSpinBingo would help me pick which spooky books to read from my list but it‘s a couple of the non spooky options. #BookSpin #DoubleSpin

I like a good family drama. Throw in some politics, and I like it even better. 🤓

This political comedy gave me the giggles and worked great on audio!

Longtime NYC Congresswoman Nancy‘s rebellious daughter threw a wrench into her Senate campaign. Greta was caught throwing a bottle at a protest while mugging for the camera. Her brother thinks he‘s retired from being their mom‘s #2, but she calls in a favor and asks him to find Greta in Paris. Meanwhile her newbie campaign manager tries to deal with the fallout.

Cinfhen Sounds fun!! 2y

Don‘t get me wrong, there‘s lots to like about it but it just never hit for me. Glad I read it but don‘t think I‘d recommend it.

LeslieO @Lola Annie picks some good ones! 2y
Lola @LeslieO I loved her past picks on the website so went with her for my first. I also liked Lucy‘s picks but she wasn‘t an option- maybe her picks are in the “Surprise Me” option for bookseller 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
LeslieO @Lola oh, I wonder why no Lucy. I also like Olivia‘s picks. 2y
Lola @LeslieO I saw that Lucy is working remotely so maybe she‘s only just sometimes? 🤷🏻‍♀️🤔 I also wonder if she‘s one of the potential booksellers if you choose the “surprise me” option. 2y
