Bohemian Gospel
Bohemian Gospel | Dana Chamblee Carpenter
Thirteenth-century Bohemia is a dangerous place for a girl, especially one as odd as Mouse, born with unnatural senses and an uncanny intellect. Some call her a witch. Others call her an angel. Even Mouse doesn t know who or what she is. But she means to find out. When young King Ottakar shows up at the Abbey wounded by a traitor's arrow, Mouse breaks church law to save him and then agrees to accompany him back to Prague as his personal healer. Caught in the undertow of court politics at the castle, Ottakar and Mouse find themselves drawn to each other as they work to uncover the threat against him and to unravel the mystery of her past. But when Mouse's unusual gifts give rise to a violence and strength that surprise everyone especially herself she is forced to ask herself: Will she be prepared for the future that awaits her?A heart-thumping, highly original tale in the vein of Elizabeth Kostova's The Historian, Bohemian Gospel heralds the arrival of a fresh new voice for historical fiction. Quite a page-turner, especially the last third, which turned very grim. Just brutal. In 13th century Bohemia, a 15-year-old girl known as Mouse saves the life of a young king, and the course of her life is changed. Part historical fiction, part slow-burn horror, with just a splash of fantasy (probably not the kind you are imagining). The ending definitely hooked me for the next book. And good god, I am glad I was not born in the medieval era. 4⭐

vivastory 😂💯 agree with you 4y
saresmoore Ooh, I‘m intrigued by your review! I have been in the mood for something like this. Do not ask me why, but here we are. 4y
readordierachel @saresmoore It was a surprise to me. I had zero expectations and it kept me steadily turning pages. Be warned though, it gets very, very dark. 4y

I'm not sure how to rate this. The subject matter is dark. Mouse is the girl who doesn't know who her parents are, but she's a healer and she sees people's souls, but doesn't see her own soul. The writing is good, if you like
stories of good and evil. I guess I'm just saying right now this book bothered me, but I finished it, and give it 3 ⭐️. A very interesting twist at the end. And this is first of a series #24B4Monday #readathon

This was so good! At times scary and definitely dark throughout, I liked this so much more than I thought. Mouse was such a likeable heroine that you wanted to stay with her regardless of what she did (and she did a lot).

Lots of trigger warnings for this one so warnings there.

My #CheapThrills are definitely the library books that I am constantly getting. They also cause me a lot of anxiety though since I get too many out at once (this is only half the ones I have right now). #LyricalApril @Cinfhen

Chose this to broaden my historical fiction map. Medieval Bohemia isn't a common setting and Mouse isn't a common girl. A slow burn, there's an unexpected twist that arrives near the end; something not usually found in HistFic. Book 2 joins the world in 2017 and should be quite different. I really want to see where this goes.

LeahBergen That sounds good. I've never read anything set in medieval Prague. 👍🏼 8y

Carpenter's debut novel, set in 13th-century Bohemia, follows Mouse, a teenager grappling with supernatural gifts that are tied to her mysterious past. Historical fiction with strong fantasy/supernatural elements and draws attention to a somewhat neglected facet of medieval history.
