Peril | Bob Woodward, Robert Costa
14 posts | 14 read | 7 to read
The transition from President Donald J. Trump to President Joseph R. Biden Jr. stands as one of the most dangerous periods in American history. But as # 1 internationally bestselling author Bob Woodward and acclaimed reporter Robert Costa reveal for the first time, it was far more than just a domestic political crisis. Woodward and Costa interviewed more than 200 people at the center of the turmoil, resulting in more than 6,000 pages of transcriptsand a spellbinding and definitive portrait of a nation on the brink. This classic study of Washington takes readers deep inside the Trump White House, the Biden White House, the 2020 campaign, and the Pentagon and Congress, with vivid, eyewitness accounts of what really happened. Peril is supplemented throughout with never-before-seen material from secret orders, transcripts of confidential calls, diaries, emails, meeting notes and other personal and government records, making for an unparalleled history. It is also the first inside look at Bidens presidency as he faces the challenges of a lifetime: the continuing deadly pandemic and millions of Americans facing soul-crushing economic pain, all the while navigating a bitter and disabling partisan divide, a world rife with threats, and the hovering, dark shadow of the former president. We have much to do in this winter of peril, Biden declared at his inauguration, an event marked by a nerve-wracking security alert and the threat of domestic terrorism. Peril is the extraordinary story of the end of one presidency and the beginning of another, and represents the culmination of Bob Woodwards news-making trilogy on the Trump presidency, along with Fear and Rage. And it is the beginning of a collaboration with fellow Washington Post reporter Robert Costa that will remind readers of Woodwards coverage, with Carl Bernstein, of President Richard M. Nixons final days.

At this point I‘m exhausted on the subject. Read it as a curiosity. Well written. I can‘t say I was shocked. Anything that might of been surprising had been played out on the 24 hour news networks on the day of its publishing. Still too soon to be objective history. Read if you really want to relive it again.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I‘m always amazed at how popular these books are in Australian libraries (I work in a public library and I order nonfiction titles for the service - and we almost always end up buying additional copies to meet demand. Trump obsessed.) 2y
Tkgbjenn1 @thegirlwiththelibrarybag like him or hate him. There‘s no denying that he was a unique character. There were so many “I can‘t believe that” moments. 2y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Tkgbjenn1, he‘s certainly inspired a lot of books. 2y

This book was clearly written to exonerate Trump‘s inner circle but Trump clearly still is a danger for our country and anyone who supports him clearly opposes the very idea of democracy.

As always, Woodward‘s books allow us a behind the scene look into the politics of the presidency. It was especially interesting to read about the military‘s perspective on an Afghanistan pull out.

Mehso-so

I stopped reading about this piece of shit the moment he left the White House. But all the coverage of this book on political shows drew me back in. While fairly interesting, there was nothing in here that was surprising. I expected to read that Trump wanted to nuke Canada on his way out of office, or something like that. No such thing happened. This is somewhere between So-So and a Pick for me.

"I don't want to be your friend anymore if you don't do this," said the toddler-in-chief. What else? Was he not going to share his M&Ms?

An unsettling book, but one that captures the tumult of 2020-2021 well.

The first half is fascinating, adding many piquant details to the (better) I Alone Can Fix It. But it was designed to cover both the end of Trump and the first months of the Biden administration. The latter is simply less interesting. I‘m very glad the Biden administration has been less interesting, but it doesn‘t make for an interesting story.

As good as I suspected it would be.

CoverToCoverGirl My Mom is currently reading this, so I expect she‘ll pass it along to me once she‘s finished. 3y

Fascinating and terrifying and a surprisingly easy read given the subject matter.
