Devotion | HANNAH. KENT
In early-nineteenth century Prussia, Hanne and her Lutheran family escape religious persecution by securing passage to the new colony of South Australia. Sharing the diabolical conditions of shipboard life is Hanne's friend, Thea. By journey's end, a bond has been forged that is so strong, nothing can break it. A shared existence in a new land is impossible - God, society and the natural order say so - but within the impossible, there is devotion.

I loved this. Perfect slow-burn historical fiction. A Lutheran community leave their home in Prussia to travel to a new colony in Australia. The ship voyage alone takes 6-months. The sense of place as we travel with them, their fear in facing the unknown, was written so well. And the second half? Well, I was not expecting that, alllll the feelings. I‘ve got that sadness at leaving Hanne and Thea behind that you only get with a great book.

Cathythoughts Great review! Stacked. 1y
Cinfhen Ohhhh! I‘ve been wanting to read this one ☝🏼 Thanks for putting it back on my #ReadersRadar 1y

I loved Burial rights and this has been on my list for so long. Beautiful and immersive writing of a community travelling across the world on an arduous journey. This story chronicles the hardships the community experienced and a love story of two young women. Heartbreaking and atmospheric. I really enjoyed this and I will read anything Hannah Kent writes !

Absolutely adored the first half, the lyrical prose, the gorgeous words used. It was interesting historically too as I wasn't aware Of the period and group of people persecuted.
I found the second half less appealing, I lost a bit of interest although the writing was still beautiful.

LapReader More beautiful than the Australian cover. 2y

Hmmm… this started off quite slowly and then I was just beginning to enjoy it when there was a *weird* twist. (Can‘t say what as it‘s a major spoiler)

I think this would have been much better as a straightforward historical fiction look at the lives of strictly religious immigrants to Australia in the early 1800s, as well as about 15 year old Hanne being in love with her best friend Thea but it was ruined (for me) by the ‘twist‘.

Caroline2 Hmm 🧐 I‘m intrigued (and concerned!) about the twist now….! I‘ll let ya know when I get to it. 2y
squirrelbrain You might appreciate it! @Caroline2 2y
LeeRHarry Hoping to get to this very soon - and now you have me really intrigued - I‘m seeing Hannah Kent talk at the Melbourne Writers Festival next month. 2y

squirrelbrain That will be a great talk @LeeRHarry , I‘m sure! I loved Burial Rites but this one just didn‘t work for me. I‘m sure it‘s me though and not the book! 2y
JillR @squirrelbrain I just finished this (and now browsing past reviews to see what others thought!). The twist threw me too and I thought it had lost me, but actually I warmed to the change of theme and ended up really loving it. 1y
squirrelbrain @JillR - glad you loved it in the end! If I recall I was reading a lot of books / rushing this one hence at least some of my frustration with it. 1y
JillR @squirrelbrain I definitely think that if I‘d been in a different mood I‘d have felt differently about part 2 of this one… 1y

This book started with such bright promise. It devolved into endless and repetitive passages of prose that needed a harsh editing. The ending was cheesy and disappointing. Such a shame.

An exquisite novel, I loved it. Hannah Kent has a mastery of language that makes every sentence a joy to read. The characters and world are earthy & beautifully depicted. It‘s a love story but not sentimental. I was so immersed that I felt physically affected by some of the turning points. (I won‘t spoil). Tissue warning!

Hanna-B I thought it started beautifully and I was totally engrossed. But then it became repetitive and my interest waned radically. By the end I was just glad to finish it. 2y
Abailliekaras @Hanna-B interesting! My friend had a similar reaction - loved the first half not the second half. 2y

Does anyone know about a North American release date for Hannah Kent's latest? I've loved her books, and I can't wait to get my hands on this one, but I can't seem to find ANYTHING about when it will be available here 😢

TieDyeDude Maybe try reaching out to her on Twitter? 3y
TheKidUpstairs @TieDyeDude oh, good idea. I'm not on Twitter often at all, so I never think to use it! Will try that (and report back if I hear anything) 3y

You have done it again Hannah Kent! Fabulous book, glorious prose! The heartbreak of your first love.
I was lucky enough to listen to Hannah talk about this book on the weekend with @MrsMalaprop at the Perth writers festival, such a beautiful weekend. We had a picnic, a drink, a chat and read our books under the shade of a tree. So grateful 😊

I‘m making this a ‘Pick‘ even though I felt it was more ‘so-so‘. It is my own fault. My expectations of this book were too high. I‘ve been looking forward to reading it since I heard it was due to be published. Her book ‘Burial Rites‘ is one of my all time favourites. I usually don‘t mind a bit of magical realism but just didn‘t enjoy it in this book. Overall, It was well written and interesting but just not the brilliant book I was hoping for

This is Hannah Kent‘s third novel. She is a #mustreadauthor for me. Her books champion women on the fringes. Historical fiction with a twist. Her writing is sublime. It‘s a ‘yes‘ from me. #ozfiction ❤️

TheKidUpstairs I can't wait until this one comes out, but I think it's months away from Canadian publication! 3y
