Books and Libraries: Poems
Books and Libraries: Poems | Andrew Scrimgeour
10 posts | 5 read | 14 to read
An enchanting book about books: a beautiful hardcover Pocket Poets anthology that testifies to the passion books and libraries have inspired through the ages and around the world Books have long captured the love, imagination, even the veneration, of readers everywhere. Emily Dickinson envisions these precious objects as "Frigates" that "take us Lands away"; Alberto Rios calls them "the deli offerings of civilization itself." This affection extends to the hallowed gathering places of the written word: the libraries and bookshops where one can best hear "a choir of authors murmuring inside their books," as Billy Collins has it. The poets collected here range from the writer of Ecclesiastes in the third century BCE through such pillars of world literature as Catullus, Horace, T'ao Ch'ien, Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, Pierre de Ronsard, Lope de Vega, Shakespeare, Goethe, and Wordsworth; more recent luminaries include Jorge Luis Borges, C. P. Cavafy, Gabriela Mistral, Wallace Stevens, Iku Takenaka, Pablo Neruda, Wislawa Szymborska, Maya Angelou, and Derek Walcott. A remarkably diverse treasury of literary celebrations, Books and Libraries is sure to take pride of place on the shelves of the book-obsessed.

Awesome collection of poems, one of my favorite in the series I think. I really liked quite a lot of the poems. My only hang-up was that the editor didn‘t include dates of the poets, so I didn‘t have a reference of their era, and they do that in all the other collections.

Some recent #bookmail , including the latest #BetsyTacy Society newsletter. The tagged book was one I‘ve seen @LeahBergen and other Littens post about. But the one I‘m most excited about is Felicia, a children‘s book about a cat who turns into a little girl. I‘ve never seen a copy that wasn‘t priced at hundreds of dollars, so I was thrilled to find a copy on eBay for $13 (including postage! 😸)

LeahBergen Ooo, and you were just telling me about Felicia a little while ago! Nice find! 2y

rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen I know—I really feel lucky. The only other copies currently for sale are both over $500. 🙄 2y

I loved this little volume of poetry set in sections such as The Love of Books, Because of Libraries, Marginalia, to Rethinking Books and Reading from poets from Wordsworth, to Borges, to Larkin and Dove. My favorite microhistory books to read are about books and libraries and I also love poetry, so this was the perfect book to add to my collection. I loved it!

TheBookHippie I put this on my Amazon book wish list when I saw it!!! Good to know it‘s worth it. 2y
LeahBergen Ah, so you DID get it for Christmas! 👏 2y
Palimpsest @LeahBergen Yes, I did! 😄 2y
