I loved every page of this book. Penetrating characterizations! Exquisite heartbreak and not just of the romantic type. I feel for all of the characters frankly, despite their flaws and mistakes.

I was the slowpoke, but so glad I finished! @rubyslippersreads @quietjenn @elkeOriginal @LeahBergen @Cathythoughts @Jess_Read_This @CarolynM @Sparklemn @sisilia @andrew61 @mklong

CarolynM Nice review! Now let‘s talk about Anita and Tony 😲🥴 That made me SO uncomfortable! He was literally a schoolboy - younger than her dead son! It seemed sort of reverse Oedipal to me, but the tone of the text seemed to be that it was all perfectly reasonable and the adults who had a problem with it were the unhealthy ones. 1y
quietjenn So glad you enjoyed it. It's a gem. 1y
LeahBergen Lovely review! 1y
LeahBergen @CarolynM Right?? I was totally floored by that plot twist. 😮😮 I kept thinking it was just a sweet and motherly sort of relationship that was blooming until … it wasn‘t!! What the?? 1y
CarolynM @LeahBergen The psychology of it seems VERY messed up to me, but I don't think the author thought there was anything wrong with it😳 1y
Tamra @CarolynM It definitely takes the reader aback and does have icky incestuous vibes (mommy-lover role ala The Graduate.) 😳 I suspect De Waal was pushing the envelope in the 60‘s, challenging the more common depiction of the reverse relationship. 1y
Tamra @LeahBergen 😜 came out of nowhere! I suspect she was making a statement about women‘s sexuality, even if they have a maternal nature. It is interesting De Waal explores/contrasts needs & desires at three different stages of life, but in the context of May-December relationships. Odd triangle! I felt so sad for Mr. Barlow. 🙁 1y
Tamra @AlaMich I don‘t recall, but I bet it was Half Price Books. 1y
Tamra @tjwill thanks - me too! It coincidentally fits the novel with its secret walled garden. 1y
Tamra @elkeOriginal life disappointment for the characters all the way around. 😐 1y
Tamra @quietjenn it is! I just put her Exiles Return novel in my Abe Books cart. (edited) 1y

What character development! Emily, I‘m afraid, is going to find herself with a challenge she may not be able to tackle to her satisfaction. 🫢

I feel a tad sorry for her - compulsively scheduling every minute of her day. Being oblivious to the feelings of others or the arrogance of her “ministrations.” #persephoneclub

Cathythoughts Great character development 👌🏻 1y
Cathythoughts I feel for Emily , but then I don‘t. Family dynamics 🙄 the roles we play. 💔 (edited) 1y

Tamra @Cathythoughts yes - exactly! 👌🏾I can definitely see the role playing between the sisters. (edited) 1y
Tamra @LeahBergen I know, right? I am taxed with juggling even a few must run errands or appointments along with all the everyday tasks. Let alone booking every single minute! Like Mr. Barlow, I don‘t embrace interruptions. 😉 1y
Aimeesue This made me laugh, as we got an email today at work about a required time management training, for which the organizer would like us to fill out a week's schedule of what we do with our time, 24 hours a day. Can't wait to see what she thinks of me sleeping 9 hours a night and reading 3-6 hours a day. 😂 1y
Tamra @Aimeesue 😜 that‘s a pretty ridiculous task! 1y
Sparklemn @Aimeesue That type of work “training“ makes me nauseous. What a waste of time! 1y
Aimeesue @Sparklemn Exactly! The good part is that it's virtual, so I can work on some needle felting projects while I'm listening in. Multi-tasting's a Time management technique, right? 😂 1y
Tamra @Aimeesue yes! 🤣 1y

Ohhhhhh my! Only 5 chapters in and I could post dozens of quotes. The writing is simply exquisite and de Waal‘s characters are emotionally complex.

P.S. I feel so badly for Cecelia‘s character at this point. Her ennui is palpable.

Apologies for being slow to finish this #PersephoneClub pick! A lovely if melancholy portrait of an English country house past its prime and the people connected to it who are jolted to life by a foreign visitor. The writing was beautiful, the descriptions of the house and grounds eloquent, and Waal brilliantly portrays complex characters subtly and perfectly. I hoped for a happy ending though I knew that was unrealistic…

Just the sort of book I've come to expect from our #PersephoneClub reads. The intertwined story of the people and the house that brings them together. Stellar writing, a wistful air, and subtle commentary on history, class, and human nature.

The forward compares this book to King Lear and the afterword refers to Mansfield Park, Howards End and Brideshead Revisited and it is, indeed, both a story of a disfunctional family and a story of a vanishing way of life, represented by a decaying country house. I‘m not going to say any more until all of the #PersephoneClub have finished reading but I‘m looking forward to discussing it with you all.

Cathythoughts Nice review. Yes I saw the King Lear connection, and the ending of a way of life. 1y

#PersephoneClub I loved this story. I got a melancholy feeling at the very start of the book, but that seemed to lift when certain characters appeared in the house. Mr. Barlow, Anita , and Tony bring feelings to the house , and fill it with life. The house holds them all. It‘s written in a beautiful slow pace , but for me it was a page turner. Nature and the gardens play their part too, and reflect the feelings and relationships that unfold.

TrishB Lovely review ♥️ 1y
Soubhiville Great photo! What kind of plant is that? It‘s so shiny and healthy looking. 1y

Milton Place is the story of a house and those who love it : Mr. Barlow who is living out his last years there, his grandson Tony who will never be able to afford to keep it, and Anita, an Austrian visitor to the house whose mother was the great love of Mr. Barlow‘s life. This book took me a while to read but I ended up loving the poignancy of the post WW2 setting and what it meant for the outcome of that way of life. 👇

#PersephoneClub

LeahBergen The Hare With Amber Eyes, written by the author‘s grandson, has many references to Elisabeth‘s life and photos of her childhood summer home which inspired Milton Place. I haven‘t read it yet but have enjoyed looking at the numerous photos! 1y
Cathythoughts Lovely review ❤️ Poignancy is a good word to describe this book, there are so many poignant moments. I‘m hoping to finish today 🤞🏻 1y

BarbaraBB This sounds like a true #Persephone. Wonderful review. The Hare is on the list of #1001books to read before you die but I haven‘t read it yet. I will one day… 1y
CarolynM I was quite reluctant to read The Hare With Amber Eyes - all the hype put me right off - but once I got over myself and gave it try I liked it a lot. I found the family story much more interesting than I expected to. I would definitely recommend it to all of you @LeahBergen @Cathythoughts @BarbaraBB 1y
AnneCecilie I loved The Hare With Amber Eyes when I read it a decade ago and it was the one that had me starting on Proust. 1y
BarbaraBB @AnneCecilie @CarolynM Thanks for the heads up, this is very helpful. I‘ll try to get a copy! 1y
mandarchy I would love to see this illustrated version. I read the Hare many years ago and you know it's a good book because I can remember so much of it. I have given books 5 stars and then not be able to remember anything about it a year later. So when details stick I'm impressed. 1y
quietjenn Oh, what an interesting connection! I'm looking forward to finally settling in with this one - perhaps this afternoon. I am *always* down for some poignancy! 1y
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts Thanks, Cathy. Yes, the photos of the author made me think I was looking at the character, Anita. 1y
LeahBergen @BarbaraBB I think you might like this one. And yes, I‘ve had The Hare With Amber Eyes on my shelves for years! 😬 1y
LeahBergen @CarolynM That‘s so good to know. I‘m always the sort who never reads a book during its hyped phase. 😆 1y
LeahBergen @AnneCecilie That‘s interesting! I‘ve read and enjoyed one Proust book and maybe this one will get me to carry on with him. 1y
LeahBergen @Tamra You just might! 😆 1y
LeahBergen @mandarchy It‘s gorgeously produced with photos of lots of the netsukes on the endpapers. And I‘m the same; if a book‘s details stick years later, that‘s an amazing thing! 1y
LeahBergen @quietjenn And Persephone usually delivers on poignancy. 😆 1y
Sparklemn @CarolynM Your comment on getting over yourself made me laugh. A good reminder for when I need to do this, too! 1y

Another really interesting read with again a fascinating life behind the writing as referenced in both fore and afterword. A definite cuckoo in the nest story as an Austrian widow Anita Seiler invites herself to the home of retired engineer Mr Barlow who had a unrequited love for the mother of Mrs seiler. I loved the writing which was so evocative of nature, and post war manners. Another great pick which I'm glad I read. Also 👇

andrew61 I liked that it reminded me how much I enjoyed Hare with the Amber eyes (and must reread) and particularly as this story touches on the experience, albeit briefly, of Austrians during the war which the authors grandson references in his memoir. The outcome in milton place is one which I obviously won't dwell upon as others haven't finished but Mrs Seiler is so obviously lost in time and place, sad. 1y
CarolynM Lovely review. I‘ve also been thinking about Hare With Amber Eyes. I‘m about halfway through this one and still wondering where it‘s going. 1y

4⭐️ I fell in love with de Waal‘s writing in this novel that I immediately bought The Exiles Return the moment I finished this one. There‘s something about her writing; she is detailed but she does not reveal too much that the reader is often caught surprised. The revelation is told with poker face; well, at least that‘s how I felt 😅 Thank you #PersephoneClub for recommending this. What an enjoyable read!

#PersephoneClub loving the slow easy pace as we meet Mr. Barlow.

the furniture of his study was , in a manner of speaking , bone of his bone , rigid and fixed in an unalterable pattern, the landscape was breath of his breath. It was alive and full of the endless possibilities of life, just as Mr Barlow, in spite of his seventy-five years , was alive. And life means that nothing is set , nothing is finished, because beyond every end there is alwa
