The Vanishing Triangle
The Vanishing Triangle: The Unsolved Murders in One Bestselling Author's Backyard | Claire McGowan
8 posts | 8 read | 6 to read
From the bestselling author of What You Did comes a true-crime investigation that cast a dark shadow over the Ireland of her childhood. Ireland in the 1990s seemed a safe place for women. With the news dominated by the Troubles, it was easy to ignore non-political murders and sexual violence, to trust that you weren't going to be dragged into the shadows and killed. But beneath the surface, a far darker reality had taken hold. Through questioning the society and circumstances that allowed eight young women to vanish without a trace?no conclusion or conviction, no resolution for their loved ones?bestselling crime novelist Claire McGowan delivers a candid investigation into the culture of secrecy, victim-blaming and shame that left these women's bodies unfound, their fates unknown, their assailants unpunished. McGowan reveals an Ireland not of leprechauns and craic but of outdated social and sexual mores, where women and their bodies were of secondary importance to perceived propriety and misguided politics--a place of well-buttoned lips and stony silence, inadequate police and paramilitary threat. Was an unknown serial killer at large or was there something even more insidious at work? In this insightful, sensitively drawn account, McGowan exposes a system that failed these eight women--and continues to fail women to this day.

I had high hopes for this book. But it was repetitive & disorganized to the point where I felt I was going in circles as the author seemed to, without much clear information to hold on to.For me the experience was so disconcerting that I began rapidly skimming part way through, to see if I could find anything redeeming or just a tidbit to salvage the mess. Nope.

Suet624 Ooohhh,, thanks for letting me know. Sorry it didn‘t work and I‘ll be sure to stay away from it. 2y

Early breakfast while the sun is low. Just a few dog walkers to greet, bikers to watch.Other than that the quiet is only interrupted by bird song,& the gentle lull of my porch chimes.
I am feeling disappointed about this book.I feel I have to make a chart of different women because the author seems to jump around making me feel scattered. Then I came to this sentence: “ It was bad.”(28) OMG we purposely do not let our 9th graders use the word “bad”!

Amiable That looks scrumptious! 2y

This book was problematic for me for a couple of reasons. Although the author is upfront about her lack of experience writing true crime she still seemed to meander about oftentimes repeating herself. The other thing that was off putting are her swipes at America and our crime when this truly has nothing to do with these unsolved cases. This actually takes away from the missing women which is a shame as they deserve to have their stories told.

Bklover I love true crime, but I think I will stay away from this one! 3y
KristiAhlers @Bklover I‘m all about true crime. Thankfully this was a KU read so free…silver lining I suppose. 3y
jeannasser @KristiAhlers at least you didn‘t spend money on it 😂😂 3y
KristiAhlers @jeannasser exactly! I would‘ve been super salty if I had. 🤣 3y

The Vanishing Triangle refers to an area in Ireland from where eight young women vanished into thin air never to be seen again. I thought this was a riveting read. It's not a book where the author solves the cold cases, McGowan admits that early on, it's a book which looks at the social issues in Ireland & Northern Ireland at the time. 4🌟

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Amazon Publishing UK, for the opportunity to read an ARC. #NetGalley

EadieB Was an unknown serial killer at large or was there something even more insidious at work? Eight women went missing from an area roughly 80 miles around Dublin. This is a fascinating read and well-researched by McGowan. I enjoyed this book as it was very passionate to McGowan to write. I would like to thank NetGalley and Amazon Publishing UK Little A for a copy for an honest review. 3y
EvieBee This sounds great! I‘ve been on a true crime kick and this sounds perfect. I was able to get a free copy for Amazon‘s First Reads. 🫶🏼 3y

Written very badly. I struggled thru the entire book. What I did like was learning about these cases, but I found the writing was repetitive and the fact she mentions several times how horrible America was when these cases had absolutely nothing to do with America was a little off putting. Also strays from the victims to other cases that may or may not be connected. It was just really confusing.

KristiAhlers Yeah I‘ve already run into a thinly veiled snide comment about America and I‘m not even through the first chapter. This should be fun. Why can‘t authors keep their opinions to themselves in books like this. 3y
BookedBySunrise @KristiAhlers, and skips around to other cases. But did it in a way that I stayed confused and lost my focus. Soon I didn't know if im reading about the original 8 missing women or not. 3y
