I don‘t think I need to explain this one.
This book has more of a mystery/thriller vibe than the first one, and I‘m here for it.

This one is shaping up to be a miss for me from McGinnis‘s catalog 🫤 I‘m questioning my reading palate too since this seems to be in everyone‘s top 2 fav McGinnis books. Maybe FOTS set my expectations WAY too high or my mood reader senses are not in the mood. That‘s why I‘m setting it aside. IDK, but I just can‘t help but feel “meh” about almost everything in this book. I find Mickey‘s reasoning behind her addiction way too weak. 😭

jeannasser DISCLAIMER: Don‘t be surprised if my review of this when I do finish it ends up being a 10 or something like that. My mood reader self works like this. If I‘m not in the mood for contemporary I‘m not going to enjoy the book because I‘m just not in the mood. 😭😭 3w

1. The MC‘s character development and how I was able to root for her every step of the way. That‘s the reason why I felt every bit of tension in the story despite the book‘s obvious flaws.
2. I wish that there was even more to the mystery rather than what was revealed at the end. So maybe a sequel could‘ve had an even bigger twist waiting to be unfolded and causing more trouble in the ship.

READER SINFUL CONFESSION TIME:

Raise your hand if you‘re a mood reader!
Yup me too 🙋‍♂️ (I‘m raising all four of my limbs)

It can be a real pain in the peach but here‘s my situation:
I could be halfway or even finishing a book I love, and if my mood reader senses say “Nope. Go read some depressing contemporary.” Then that‘s exactly what I‘ll do. That‘s why I have 4 books I‘m putting off while I satisfy my fantasy cravings.

Just me, right?😔

How many books did you read in March and what was your fav?

I‘m not enjoying this one as much as Be Not Far From Me and Female of the Species (I‘m sorry 😭) but I‘m still enjoying it a lot. The pacing is a little slow compared to the rest of her books I‘ve read and so far Mickey is my least favorite McGinnis MC.
That being said, it‘s McGinnis, so it‘s still an awesome book nonetheless. It gets darker and sadder the more I get into it so I might eat my words.

In March 5th I made this TikTok where I challenged myself to let this filter decide how many books I‘m gonna read this month.
It‘s the 23rd, and I‘m not even halfway through my 3rd book 😀 yay
Right now me and @WJCintron are in the process of moving so I‘ll barely have time to read or even finish Heroine. Should I still try to hit this 29 book goal next month?

So far I‘ve learned that McGinnis = emotional destruction so I‘m ready for it today. My mood reader senses have been craving a lot of depressing stuff for no reason (also I wanna marathon all of McGinnis‘s books because she‘s starting to become one of my favorite female authors). How many tissues do I need for this one? Female of the Species almost made me run out.

GondorGirl This is a HARD read. I would keep a box nearby. 😭 2mo
jeannasser @GondorGirl *sighs and adds 3 boxes of tissues to my Instacart cart* 2mo
BookDragonNotWorm Have you read the first sentence yet? If I remember it was a doozy of an opening. This review is gonna sound negative…but just know that I enjoyed the VAST majority of this book. I ADORE Olson‘s writing style and Lindley as an MC. This book kept me at the edge of my seat and I felt every bit of tension in the story. I was about to give it an 8. But…that last 10% What was that? It‘s almost as if Olson herself didn‘t know the truth behind the mystery OR how it was gonna end so she kind of…flew through it just to get it over with

jeannasser To elaborate more on the cons of this book. Yes…I know this book isn‘t perfect. I can understand why the reception is so polarizing. Like the majority, I didn‘t care for either of the male love interests. I cared for the female characters but none of the male ones. So you may think a 7 is too nice of a rating. Like I said, the writing, the MC‘s development, and the tension made up for all of that and I still enjoyed it A LOT. 2mo
jeannasser So in conclusion…yeah, there are SO MANY reasons why I shouldn‘t like this book. No other character was developed other than Lindley. While the love triangle scenes were sort of cute, yeah they were unnecessary and added nothing to the story. Yeah I get it. But guess what? I STILL LOVED A LOT OF THINGS ABOUT IT. It was fun, intense, & dark. And that‘s way more than what I expect from a book. I loved Lindley and I liked this book. I‘m unashamed 2mo
jeannasser Okay now for the “twist.” I did predict literally everything else that was unraveling. Especially that the deaths were murders instead of the virus. However, I didn‘t suspect Haven, so I was shocked, BUT it was a disappointing shock. She wasn‘t that well developed so therefore, I didn‘t really…care that it was her. I could‘ve sworn it was Heath and even if it was plain obvious I would‘ve enjoyed seeing that even more. Her intentions were unclear. 2mo

Okay…I‘m gonna rant a little bit 🥰
I know I‘m only 30% into this but that‘s enough time for me to decide that I am loving this so far and I am super invested in the story. The fact that this book has a 3.50 avg rating on Goodreads and a 40% avg rating on here BAFFLES me. People need to be a little more open-minded with books instead of hearing the phrase “love triangle” and instantly going 🤮. Remember Twilight? That‘s love triangle too. 🤷‍♂️

Fuck.
That‘s my review.
(In all seriousness, yes I agree that this is her best book. It passed Be Not Far From Me by a hair with that ending. This whole thing was like an A24 movie with a beautiful yet disturbing message against rape. Alex and Peekay are gonna stay with me for a while. I‘m not okay so please reach out if you‘ve read this because I need to spoiler rant like crazy despite the 451 character rule)

jeannasser Okay first of all, I got the feeling that Alex was gonna end up dying or paying the price but WHAT THE FUCK??? Also the only reason I‘m not giving this a full 10 is because the romance was rushed. Like WAY too rushed. They got together WAY too quickly. The whole piercing being ripped off thing destroyed me and also the part where Alex broiled the heck out of Sara‘s uncle. (What is it with Mindy McGinnis burning people?) overall I‘m not okay. 2mo
BookDragonNotWorm This one made me ugly cry and broke me. 2mo
jeannasser @BookDragonNotWorm I almost ugly cried and then I remembered “Alex wouldn‘t cry, so why should I?” 😭 but then that last Peekay chapter broke me. 2mo
See All 7 Comments
jeannasser @BookDragonNotWorm the moment Branley told Jack through the phone, “oh yeah, we‘re gonna be fine.” I just freaking knew she was up to something and then after it all went to hell she just crawled up to Jack in the hospital like “I‘m sorry,” and I was soooooo angry I almost threw the book. I adore Peekay btw. Protect her at all costs. I‘m glad Alex ripped out Ray‘s nose and ear like that 2mo
GondorGirl It's really difficult to say I love her books, because they're not very happy... but I think this is tied for my favorite Mindy book with 2mo
BookDragonNotWorm No doubt she's not an author you read for warm fuzziest 😂 I agree with @GondorGirl on both counts - Heroine and this one are the best (and hardest hitting), but it's almost masochistic to say you love them 😁 2mo
jeannasser @GondorGirl @BookDragonNotWorm I‘m gonna read Heroine next, then I‘m gonna do In A Handful of Dust (NADTD 2) and then I‘ll do A Madness So Discreet. Yeah her books are disturbingly sad and that‘s why I love them, because I always know I‘m gonna have my heart shattered one way or another 2mo

I actually finished this a few days ago, but I was too disappointed to write a review so here I am right now.
First off, I‘m so sorry.
I know a lot of people enjoyed this and I really wanted to, but it was SOOO hard for me to follow along with the plot. I confess I had to look at the Wiki summary to understand what happened in that entire second half because no matter how many times I flipped back the pages, I just couldn‘t understand the +

jeannasser whole worldbuilding and how the technology worked, and I say this as someone who religiously reads AND writes sci-fi. The only reason I‘m giving this 4 points is because of Murderbot itself. Its sarcasm and introverted idgaf behavior really kept me reading even though I didn‘t care for any other character OR what was happening with DeltFall and the hacked government module. There was no explanation about anything and I was just dragged into it (edited) 3mo
jeannasser Another thing I enjoyed was the writing style (for the most part). A lot of the descriptions felt very H. Beam Piper and Alan E. Nourse-esque, which I love. The first half was way more enjoyable than the second. And the only fight scene in here was really interesting. But that‘s it on my list of highlights. I‘ve never left a book halfway annotated bc I wanted to finish asap. A book this short shouldn‘t feel so tedious.Does it get better from here? 3mo
jeannasser Also I feel SO bad that I didn‘t enjoy this book when it‘s the only book I read for the #Sharreadathon I will continue to read books from @sharread ‘s tbr even if the marathon is over, because like I said, her TBR deserves to be finished. 3mo
RamsFan1963 @jeannasser Honestly, I found the first book only so-so. From the second book on, I switched to the audiobook version and enjoyed it 100% more. 3mo
jeannasser @RamsFan1963 yeah when I was reading the first half I was certain it was at least a so-so because there were some things I still found interesting but then it focused way too much on infodumping rather than character development. I never understood what Gurathin‘s deal was with Murderbot. I will still give the other books a chance bc Murderbot was an interesting enough character to make me curious. I‘m glad to hear it gets better 😁 3mo

This book didn‘t feel like it was just 411 pages, and I mean that in the most positive way. I buddy read this with my friend KC and @WJCintron and they flew through this faster than me. So much happened that I had to take breaks at times to read other things to ease my mind off a little. I can‘t talk about this without spoiling anything so all I‘ll say is yes…I fell into the hype and now I‘m a part of it 😭 Can‘t wait to read the rest!

jeannasser ZA STANS!! Let‘s discuss spoilers (mark them accordingly) in the comments!! Don‘t spoil the rest of the books for me though 😭 3mo
WJCintron Glad you liked it! 😃 👍 3mo

Bruiser | Neal Shusterman

Y‘all remember the show Beverly Hills 90210, right? Well if you like that show (especially the early high school seasons) you‘re gonna like this book without a doubt. I never would‘ve seen a book like this coming from Neal. It‘s a contemporary coming of age story with “fantasy”elements. Are these the best characters Neal has birthed? No, but i felt connected to every single one. Another book by Neal Shusterman I love? Doesn‘t surprise me. +

jeannasser This book kept me unsettled and feeling every emotion these characters were going through. It‘s almost as if I was Brew throughout this whole story, feeling every character‘s pain. I also loved the multiple first person POVs and how each one sounded unique. I also loved the idea of making Brew‘s chapters look like something straight out of an centuries-old epic poem. I recommend this book if you want a heart wrenching relatively short read 3mo
jeannasser I personally don‘t think Cody needed a POV. While I do like how Neal modified the writing to make it sound childlike I feel like it added nothing to the story and I rolled my eyes every time his name showed up as a chapter heading. The part where Uncle Hoyt beats him up was heartbreaking though. Also I kind of predicted that something was gonna happen to Brew eventually so I didn‘t get too teary-eyed when he almost died. 3mo

Be Not Far From Me | Mindy McGinnis

I finished this about 2 hrs ago but I had to gather my thoughts before reviewing.
Well f*ck (btw this book has the most F-bombs I‘ve seen in a YA thus far)
Books like these are the reason why I love reading. Like I told other fellow Littens earlier, this thin monster had me cringing, wincing, and even crying in the corner of my bedroom. When a book makes you feel this way when it‘s technically words on a page, you know it‘s good. Loved everything+

jeannasser The character development was fantastic and I could relate to Ashley so much even though I haven‘t gone through half of what she‘s experienced. I love how McGinnis didn‘t go too crazy as to make Ash‘s backstory the most disturbing thing ever, and at the same time it makes me feel for her and root for her every step of the way. I recommend this to anyone who wants a short read that will have you biting your nails till they bleed 3mo
jeannasser Tbh the only reason I‘m not giving this a 10 is because I felt like the ending was a little too “happily ever after.” I love that she broke up with Duke. I thought that was amazing and I was like “hell yes!” But everything else felt a little too “and then she drifted off into the sunset.” And I was like “okay wrap it up” Otherwise, I love how descriptive the gore is to the point where it made me flinch. The whole bit with her foot ruined me (edited) 3mo
BookDragonNotWorm Wow! You raced through this one!!! Glad you liked it!!! 3mo

GondorGirl Mindy McGinnis is constantly pushing the boundaries for YA. She's a VERY OUTSPOKEN person, in a good way, and it shows in her books. I can't exactly say I ENJOY her books, but I always devour them. 'Heroin' and 'Female of the Species' are two of her other books that I'd recommend. 3mo
jeannasser @BookDragonNotWorm when the plot of a book picks up like crazy, your reading pace subconsciously does the same 😂😂 yes I loved it!! She has quickly already become top 10 fav authors 3mo
jeannasser @GondorGirl that‘s amazing!! I need to research more of her since she has very quickly become one of my top 10 favs. I am going to continue binging her books, starting with Female then I‘ll do Madness. I also need to read the 2nd Not a Drop book since I read the first one 😭 3mo

I‘m loving this way too much so far. The character development is too good to the point where you feel that last sentence at your core.

Johanna414 Mindy McGinnis is the best 3mo
jeannasser @Johanna414 I‘m halfway through this and I love it so much 😭 this book has had me cringing and feeling pain in my bedroom. When an author makes me feel that way with just words on paper, you know they‘re good at what they do!! I wanna read everything she‘s done now 3mo
Johanna414 I've read four or five of her books and loved them all! And I've managed to get a bunch of my students into her books as well. I like that she's also a school librarian 😊 3mo
jeannasser @Johanna414 that‘s amazing!!! I‘m glad your students love her books! So far I love her writing style and how raw she is with emotions. I also read Not a Drop to Drink, which I finished yesterday. Overall it was good but I think Be not far from me blow it right out of the water. Just posted a review for it! Loved it! Will continue with my McGinnis binge starting with A Madness So Discreet 3mo
Johanna414 Female of the Species and The Initial Insult have been my favorites so far! But A Madness So Discreet was really fun too 3mo
