20% in. So far the only scary thing that has happened in this book is that there was a library filled with books covered in mildew.

persephone1408 @jeannasser I literally lol'd when I read your comment. Yes I didn't like this book very much but I did still finish it. 4d
TalesandTexts I think the ending is definitely interesting and weird enough to stick around for. But there is a bit much of setting the stage for a large chunk of the book. 3d
IMASLOWREADER lol…there were creepy parts throughout the story…it was a meh for me as well but finished it 3d

Yes after a few weeks without posting on here, this is what I come back with. I‘ve been super active on tiktok sharing reading vlogs on a book that‘s SO raunchy and kinky to the point where it‘s disturbing, as you can probably tell from my reaction here. To hell with Den of Vipers.

If u wanna follow me there and see me suffering with this book by all means, https://bit.ly/3oFpKUb

Has anyone read tagged book? If so what are your memories with it?

LibrarianRyan I have been watching your videos and laughing. I have a favorite part of each book. Have you got to the bees yet? Nice to see you here (I am the same screen name there). 2mo
JamieArc I mean, now I‘m just super curious 😂😂 2mo
Bookishlie I read them in high school, it was weirdly raunchy yet so using so much clinical language. I think she was going for a “story of O” vibe but missed, then again I was like 18 and now I‘m 48 so might get a whole different vibe from it this time. Lol 2mo

5feet.of.fury I read this 20‘+ years ago and still think about the Bridal Path. I feel like it was a rite of passage. 2mo
jeannasser @JamieArc not you stack adding it 😭😭😭😭 2mo
jeannasser @LibrarianRyan OMG hi!! I‘m so glad you‘re enjoying them !! 😭 I haven‘t gotten to the bees yet 🙃 My fav part so far is the queen‘s chamber chapter because of how insane it was 💀 but the statue part was traumatizing 🙂 2mo
jeannasser @Bookishlie i agree but I think because it‘s like medieval fairy tale talk, I guess she tried to imply that into the prose 😂 2mo
jeannasser @5feet.of.fury THAT PRT WAS HORRIFYING 💀 I‘m gonna have nightmares with Pages running towards me on horseback with paddles😭 2mo

The Last 8 | Laura Pohl

Pickpick

I just realized I actually rated this book an 8. Let‘s try to ignore the unintentional pun there shall we??
What can I say? As cliché as it sounds, this whole thing was a roller coaster of emotions. I could be laughing at something sassy a character says and by the next page, my heart would race out of my chest hoping one of them will be okay. The last few chapters melted my brain to mush and I even recommend this to those who don‘t like sci-fi 1

jeannasser Clover is one of the most exciting MCs I‘ve ever come across in YA. Seeing the story unravel through her eyes truly made this book special. Whether it is through her sarcastic comebacks or her most emotional inner dialogues, she will keep you entertained. My only complaints with the book are these; I was feeling iffy at the beginning. Some typical YA stereotypes were being brought up and it took a little while for the story to fully take off 2 3mo
jeannasser Other issue I have is with the writing style. I don‘t expect a Nevernight/SoA style of writing in everything I read, but HOLY FISH STICKS was the writing in this book FLAT AS A WALL. Like literally telling instead of showing in EVERYTHING. These may sound like reasons for me to rate it lower than I did, but trust me. The story and characters kept me on edge and at the end, I‘m FULLY satisfied with what I read. Give this a try. Very accessible 3 3mo
jeannasser I feel really really really stupid for not seeing that twist coming. It was right in front of my face. The aliens can‘t see them and they‘re immune to the alien‘s attacks? Why? OBVIOUSLY BECAUSE THEYRE NOT FREAKING HUMAN EITHER! It was soooooo obvious but at the same time I‘m glad I didn‘t figure it out. So good job to Laura for not making it too crystal clear I guess 3mo
jeannasser Also I KNEW a character was gonna die considering the fact that the next book is called The First 7, however, when Adam died it still hit a nerve. I didn‘t expect it to be him and then so suddenly. Laura chose the right character to kill off and make me suffer for. Also while I love Violet‘s growth I do feel like she switched up WAY TOO FAST from having beef with Clover to almost NONE, but no big deal 3mo

Forgot to update y‘all on this but I just recently finished this book. The photo is blank with no rating because it‘s been brought to my attention that I had read an older unrevised version of it, so I‘m gonna hold off on rating until I‘ve read the revised one. However this is definitely a pick. If you like gory (like super super gory) feminist psychological horror with lesbian rep then I highly recommend this book. A great message against SA.

Far From You | Tess Sharpe
post image
Pickpick

Going Pitchfork style with my ratings from now on. FFY fuses many genres together, but I wouldn‘t recommend this as a mystery/thriller. I recommend this because it has great characters and pure raw emotion. It explores through the struggle of dealing with grief, loss, and substance abuse in an intense way that makes me understand Sophie‘s motives, even though they‘re wrong. 1/5

jeannasser When writing contemporary books with teenagers in a similar situation, it‘s so easy to make the narrator unlikeable or flat (like Mickey from Heroine. I‘m so sorry Mindy fans but i enjoyed this a lot more 😔) However, I LOVED Sophie. She‘s strong and straightforward, and you see her growth not only in the present, but throughout several flashback chapters. 2/5 3mo
jeannasser This is not your typical coming of age book. It‘s heartbreaking, romantic, and intense. Going deep into her personal struggles and her dedication to finding out the truth behind her best friend‘s murder, is what kept my hands glued to my physical copy. I wanna call this my read of the year so far, but the only thing that kept me from enjoying this more than Female of the Species is the ending. 3/5 3mo
jeannasser The mystery reveal. What was that? It was so out of pocket and it left me scratching my head for a long time in a negative way. Didn‘t feel exciting to finally solve the mystery. It just left a bitter taste in my mouth, but overall I loved how Sophie‘s emotional and physical journey concluded, and THAT‘S what I feel people should focus on when going into this book. 4/5 3mo
See All 6 Comments
jeannasser If you‘re looking for a fast-paced coming of age book with sapphic romance and large hints of mystery/thriller, then look no further than Far From You. I will read anything Tess Sharpe writes from now on. 5/5 3mo
jeannasser Okay now a spoiler rant…of ALL characters that could‘ve been responsible for the murder and Jackie‘s disappearance…ADAM???? THE COACH??? Those characters didn‘t even have a quarter of page time in the book! I only suspected Adam when they introduced him but I quickly shrugged it off. The whole Coach sleeping with Jackie situation felt so out of pocket. It could‘ve done better in a different book much like Female of the Species, not here 3mo
jeannasser Also Aunt Macy was SOOOOOO LIKEABLE and I loved her every time she opened her mouth. There was a perfect balance between her sass and the way she cared so much about Sophie. Why did she only show up for like a quarter of the book? 😭 I feel like she could‘ve done a great job as part of the team and trying to find the killer but oh well 😒 3mo

This one is shaping up to be a miss for me from McGinnis‘s catalog 🫤 I‘m questioning my reading palate too since this seems to be in everyone‘s top 2 fav McGinnis books. Maybe FOTS set my expectations WAY too high or my mood reader senses are not in the mood. That‘s why I‘m setting it aside. IDK, but I just can‘t help but feel “meh” about almost everything in this book. I find Mickey‘s reasoning behind her addiction way too weak. 😭

jeannasser DISCLAIMER: Don‘t be surprised if my review of this when I do finish it ends up being a 10 or something like that. My mood reader self works like this. If I‘m not in the mood for contemporary I‘m not going to enjoy the book because I‘m just not in the mood. 😭😭 5mo

1. The MC‘s character development and how I was able to root for her every step of the way. That‘s the reason why I felt every bit of tension in the story despite the book‘s obvious flaws.
2. I wish that there was even more to the mystery rather than what was revealed at the end. So maybe a sequel could‘ve had an even bigger twist waiting to be unfolded and causing more trouble in the ship.

BookDragonNotWorm 😂 Sorry! Didn't mean to be a bad influence. Definitely don't start drinking to drown your book woes! Pups and peanut butter work just fine! And YES to ALL pet pics!!! 🐾 6mo
jeannasser @BookDragonNotWorm NO! It‘s okay 😂🥰 will post some soon. My dogs aren‘t very photogenic though. 🥲 6mo

I know you guys are probably tired of seeing TSS quotes but I couldn‘t move on from it without sharing these last two quotes. Here‘s one of them, and I‘m glad to see another fellow author bring in a positive message against fear. #fearisaliar

This review is gonna sound negative…but just know that I enjoyed the VAST majority of this book. I ADORE Olson‘s writing style and Lindley as an MC. This book kept me at the edge of my seat and I felt every bit of tension in the story. I was about to give it an 8. But…that last 10% What was that? It‘s almost as if Olson herself didn‘t know the truth behind the mystery OR how it was gonna end so she kind of…flew through it just to get it over with

jeannasser To elaborate more on the cons of this book. Yes…I know this book isn‘t perfect. I can understand why the reception is so polarizing. Like the majority, I didn‘t care for either of the male love interests. I cared for the female characters but none of the male ones. So you may think a 7 is too nice of a rating. Like I said, the writing, the MC‘s development, and the tension made up for all of that and I still enjoyed it A LOT. 6mo
jeannasser So in conclusion…yeah, there are SO MANY reasons why I shouldn‘t like this book. No other character was developed other than Lindley. While the love triangle scenes were sort of cute, yeah they were unnecessary and added nothing to the story. Yeah I get it. But guess what? I STILL LOVED A LOT OF THINGS ABOUT IT. It was fun, intense, & dark. And that‘s way more than what I expect from a book. I loved Lindley and I liked this book. I‘m unashamed 6mo
jeannasser Okay now for the “twist.” I did predict literally everything else that was unraveling. Especially that the deaths were murders instead of the virus. However, I didn‘t suspect Haven, so I was shocked, BUT it was a disappointing shock. She wasn‘t that well developed so therefore, I didn‘t really…care that it was her. I could‘ve sworn it was Heath and even if it was plain obvious I would‘ve enjoyed seeing that even more. Her intentions were unclear. 6mo
BeeMagical 👏🏻👏🏻 love your review! Totally agree with a lot of your points. And still enjoyed it! 6mo

Star Wars, what is a Wookiee? | Laura Buller, Kate Simkins

I found these pictures of little me in my FB memories…I don‘t think my little cousin was so thrilled about my reading hobbies. She definitely didn‘t care to hear a live in-person audiobook defining what a Wookie is, that‘s for sure…
I‘m also convinced her eyes were begging for help in that last picture. Maybe next time I visit, I should read her the entirety of Fountainhead

Okay…I‘m gonna rant a little bit 🥰
I know I‘m only 30% into this but that‘s enough time for me to decide that I am loving this so far and I am super invested in the story. The fact that this book has a 3.50 avg rating on Goodreads and a 40% avg rating on here BAFFLES me. People need to be a little more open-minded with books instead of hearing the phrase “love triangle” and instantly going 🤮. Remember Twilight? That‘s love triangle too. 🤷‍♂️

I grabbed this because I wanted a fun sci-fi adventure book to help me recover from Female of the Species.
And this is the first page…
I‘m not even 1% into this. Like give me a second to breathe!!

LitStephanie That is a pretty intense first page! 7mo

The Female of the Species | Mindy McGinnis

Pickpick

Fuck.
That‘s my review.
(In all seriousness, yes I agree that this is her best book. It passed Be Not Far From Me by a hair with that ending. This whole thing was like an A24 movie with a beautiful yet disturbing message against rape. Alex and Peekay are gonna stay with me for a while. I‘m not okay so please reach out if you‘ve read this because I need to spoiler rant like crazy despite the 451 character rule)

jeannasser Okay first of all, I got the feeling that Alex was gonna end up dying or paying the price but WHAT THE FUCK??? Also the only reason I‘m not giving this a full 10 is because the romance was rushed. Like WAY too rushed. They got together WAY too quickly. The whole piercing being ripped off thing destroyed me and also the part where Alex broiled the heck out of Sara‘s uncle. (What is it with Mindy McGinnis burning people?) overall I‘m not okay. 7mo
BookDragonNotWorm This one made me ugly cry and broke me. 7mo
jeannasser @BookDragonNotWorm I almost ugly cried and then I remembered “Alex wouldn‘t cry, so why should I?” 😭 but then that last Peekay chapter broke me. 7mo

jeannasser @BookDragonNotWorm the moment Branley told Jack through the phone, “oh yeah, we‘re gonna be fine.” I just freaking knew she was up to something and then after it all went to hell she just crawled up to Jack in the hospital like “I‘m sorry,” and I was soooooo angry I almost threw the book. I adore Peekay btw. Protect her at all costs. I‘m glad Alex ripped out Ray‘s nose and ear like that 7mo
GondorGirl It's really difficult to say I love her books, because they're not very happy... but I think this is tied for my favorite Mindy book with 7mo
BookDragonNotWorm No doubt she's not an author you read for warm fuzziest 😂 I agree with @GondorGirl on both counts - Heroine and this one are the best (and hardest hitting), but it's almost masochistic to say you love them 😁 7mo
jeannasser @GondorGirl @BookDragonNotWorm I‘m gonna read Heroine next, then I‘m gonna do In A Handful of Dust (NADTD 2) and then I‘ll do A Madness So Discreet. Yeah her books are disturbingly sad and that‘s why I love them, because I always know I‘m gonna have my heart shattered one way or another 7mo
