The Little Wartime Library
The Little Wartime Library: A gripping, heart-wrenching page-turner based on real events | Kate Thompson
10 posts | 9 read | 13 to read
London, 1944. Clara Button is no ordinary librarian. While the world remains at war, in East London Clara has created the country's only underground library, built over the tracks in the disused Bethnal Green tube station. Down here a secret community thrives: with thousands of bunk beds, a nursery, a caf and a theatre offering shelter, solace and escape from the bombs that fall above. Along with her glamorous best friend and library assistant Ruby Munroe, Clara ensures the library is the beating heart of life underground. But as the war drags on, the women's determination to remain strong in the face of adversity is tested to the limits when it seems it may come at the price of keeping those closest to them alive. Based on true events, The Little Wartime Library is a gripping and heart-wrenching page-turner that remembers one of the greatest resistance stories of the war.

I'm not sure if it was the writing or the translation that felt a bit weak, and maybe the romance was a bit too much for me but this was just an average 3-star read for me.

#ReadAway2024 Based on a true story, this was a wonderful book. It takes place in London during WWII when thousands of people who lost their homes to the Blitz lived in an unfinished Tube station. In Bethnal Green the library was destroyed on the first night of the Blitz and the Head Librarian is killed. Clara is the head of the library built in the Tube station. In spite of the sad things that happened, some things are happy. The author (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 interviewed 100 librarians in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 1922 opening of the Bethnal Green Library. The quotes from these librarians that open each chapter are bittersweet to me. In England there is a statute that requires free libraries to be opened. The love of reading and respect for librarians doesn‘t seem to exist in the US anymore, if it ever did. There were many characters and the resolutions of their stories may (cont)⬇️ 8mo
CatLass007 have been dragged out a little but that‘s a minor issue. The love of reading is such a strong presence in this book that I still give the book 5 stars out of 5. 8mo

What a perfect London WWII staycation, @BethM ! I was hoping you would choose that. And you chose one of the books I really wanted and one that sounds absolutely wonderful that wasn‘t on my radar—and the tote is fabulous. Another really fun swap, @Chrissyreadit and @DinoMom ! Litsy is the best. #staycation

MittenGirlPeach @BethM it sounds fantastic! And it wasn‘t on any of my lists, which is even better cuz I love surprises. And it fits my overall theme really well. Looking forward to getting cozy with both books soon! 1y

The Little Wartime Library by kate Thompson is a wonderful piece of historical fiction! The fact that this booj is based on true events makes it even more appealing. A fascinating peek into the London underground community during WWII. This close knit community pulls together and rallies around one another. Clara button is the Bethel Green Tube station's librarian and she along with her friend and coworker Ruby are the unspoken(cont in comments)

TheHeartlandBookFairy leaders of the community. Opening the library app for children's reading time, adults's book club, and general support, advice, and acceptance for all. They are the glue that holds them all together! From tragedy to triumph, heart break to hearts healed, across the ocean and back, this book was an absolute delight! "Check out" The Little Wartime Library and see for yourself ? 2y
