Still Just a Geek
Still Just a Geek: An Annotated Memoir | Wil Wheaton
13 posts | 11 read | 5 to read
Celebrated actor, personality, and all-around nerd, Wil Wheaton updates his memoir of collected blog posts with all new material and annotations as he reexamines one of the most interesting lives in Hollywood and fandom--and now for the first time in audio, narrated by Wil himself! From starring in Stand by Me to playing Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation to playing himself, in his second (third?) iconic role of Evil Wil Wheaton in The Big Bang Theory, to becoming a social media supernova, Wil Wheaton has charted a career course unlike anyone else, and has emerged as one of the most popular and well respected names in science fiction, fantasy and pop culture. Back in 2001, Wil began blogging on wilwheaton.net. Believing himself to have fallen victim to the curse of the child actor, Wil felt relegated to the convention circuit, and didnt expect many would want to read about his random experiences and personal philosophies. Yet, much to his surprise, people were reading. He still blogs, and now has an enormous following on social media with well over 3 million followers. In Still Just a Geek, Wil revisits his 2004 collection of blog posts, Just a Geek, filled with insightful and often laugh-out-loud annotated comments, additional later writings, and all new material written for this publication. The result is an incredibly raw and honest memoir, in which Wil opens up about his life, about falling in love, about coming to grips with his past work, choices, and family, and finding fulfillment in the new phases of his career. From his times on the Enterprise to his struggles with depression to his starting a family and finding his passion--writing--Wil Wheaton is someone whose life is both a cautionary tale and a story of finding ones true purpose that should resonate with fans and aspiring artists alike.

🎧 Genuine. Great narrator. This is an annotated version of Just a Geek. All the acting drama you‘d ever want & berates his younger self for being edgey for the wrong reasons & apologizes profusely for his younger self‘s treatment of women.

I‘ve liked him just the way he is for a long time & mostly post-Wesley. He talks about life after walking away from acting, family life, new horizons, mental health, abuse in the industry, etc.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is the annotated version of Wheaton‘s memoir, Just a Geek, where Wheaton looks back at his 20-something year old self through the lens of experience and maturity.
I enjoyed learning about Wheaton and all his nerdiness and I understand much of the book was pulled from his blog posts, but the amount of repetition drove me up the wall.

I‘ve read Just a Geek, so I originally hesitated about this one, thinking it might be too much. Wil has clearly been in a lot of therapy since then and he seems to be in a better place mentally now, which is great. This is a little overly long, but I like Wil, so I didn‘t mind. Be aware there‘s a lot here about child abuse (should we really have child actors at all?), but I think this would be validating for mental health sufferers.

I was going to start this audiobook today but it‘s 24 hours and I cannot make that commitment today. I think I‘ll return this and check it out another time.

#TooMuch #NotCommited

Prairiegirl_reading Wil Wheaton‘s memoir is 24 hours long? Am I the only one who thinks that‘s excessive? There must be a mistake there somewhere. 2y
ShananigansReads @Prairiegirl_reading I thought it was excessive too. 2y
Eyelit @Prairiegirl_reading @Bookjunkie57 so he basically takes his memoir written in 2005 and annotates it… and then adds a few extra blog posts and speeches at the end. I never read the original memoir so all this was new to me and it mostly works in audio - but I did feel like it was overly long and his original memoir did not age well (which he acknowledges - a lot) 2y
ShananigansReads @Eyelit interesting. I didn‘t even know there was an original so I am intrigued. 2y

The follow-up to Just a Geek, former child actor Will Wheaton from Star Trek: The Next Generation continues his journey into adulthood by sharing current and former blog posts, his experiences in the industry, his life now as a family man and all things nerdy and geeky. Included are anecdotes and his love for gaming and being a pop culture icon.

It's amazing how little you can know about a person you have known about almost your entire life. This book was far more emotional than I expected. I did expect to be disappointed in myself for not having read the original version but I'm glad I didn't. My perception would have been altered negatively had I not also read current Wil's view. Damn him for making me think even better of him. WHEATON! #32-2022

Book #27 for 2022. I got this because I like other books that Wil Wheaton has narrated & I love a good celebrity memoir. I would have found this very interesting since I don't know a lot about him. I realize that Just a Geek was written in a different time, using a vernacular that is out dated. Every time he used a word (ie lame) he made a HUGE deal & apologized for using it. He did this 27 times, he counted, it was overkill & distracting.
