An unexpected connection becomes the saving grace for two unlikely friends in a heart-stirring novel about love, loss, and moving forward by a New York Times and #1 Amazon Charts bestselling author.
Never knowing his parents, eleven-year-old Stewie Little and his brother have been raised on a farm by their older sister. Stewie steadfastly tends the chickens left by his beloved late grandmother. And every day Stewie goes door to door selling fresh eggs from his wagon—a routine with a surprise just around the corner. It’s his new customer, Marilyn. She’s prickly and guarded, yet comfortably familiar—she reminds the grieving Stewie so much of the grandmother he misses more than he can express.
Marilyn has a reason for keeping her distance: a secret no one knows about. Her survival tactic is to draw a line between herself and other people—one that Stewie is determined to cross. As their visits become more frequent, a complicated but deeply rooted relationship grows. That’s when Stewie discovers how much more there is to Marilyn, to her past, and to challenges that become more pressing each day. But whatever difficult times lie ahead, Stewie learns that although he can’t fix everything for Marilyn or himself, at least he’s no longer alone.

1. I would probably name my yacht something like Blueberry's Patch and paint blueberries on it.
2. Several long mystery series and everything I haven't yet read by Catherine Ryan Hyde.

This is our February book club book and I was quite surprised with how much I really loved this sweetly sad book. The audio is well-performed with two readers for both 11-year-old Stewie and his older neighbor, Marilyn. Stewie meets her during his egg route and this new relationship changes his whole life. I wasn‘t expecting to be brought to tears over chickens, but I really enjoyed this quick listen!

Why do I forget about Catherine Ryan Hyde? She is a great author of so many heartwarming and feel-good stories. It's honestly like a breath of fresh air. If you ever get a bit tired of complicated sci-fi worlds, books where everyone gets murdered, or if those romantic rom coms all start seeming hum drum..switch to one of Catherine's highly rated books. I enjoyed this one about 11 yr old Stewie who learns about loss and love of family and friends.

KathyWheeler Goodreads often recommends her books for me, but I‘ve never read one. Sounds like I should checkout her work. 2y

What a dear coming of age story. A young boy who lost his “Gam.” He lives only with his older sister and handicapped brother. He pours his energies into raising Gsm‘s hens and selling eggs. A perfectly lovely, ambitious and deeply wounded little child. He finds an unlikely, yet similar grandmother figure in a crusty woman on his route. Her problems become his concerns and she helps him to find a path to live fully again. Sweet story!!

Stewart is being raised by his sister along with his older brother. Stewie develops a relationship with Marilyn when he appears before her selling fresh eggs from his chickens that were once his grandma‘s. The relationship that develops between Stewie and Marilyn is so sweet.

I went into this without knowing anything but the cover synopsis. An easy read, about a sweet 11 year old boy who was orphaned as an infant and is being raised with his disabled brother by their older sister. Stewie‘s connection to the world is complex yet compassionate. His friendship with Marilyn is endearing and they truly help each other in the end. Stewie is so precious. This is a story about, connections. Book #38 in 2022

Allthebookclubs I find that end of life care is awful, our parents do everything for us when we‘re born until we‘re at least 18, and many parents continue to help their kids in so many ways well into adulthood. The fact that this family could not find it in their hearts to consider their mothers final chapter in life and try to make it the best for her is infuriating.

“Stewie rolled his shoulders and pulled the collar of his shirt away from his sweaty neck.” #FirstLineFridays
