Blackout | John Rocco

One hot summer night in the city, all the power goes out. The TV shuts off and a boy wails, "Mommm!" His sister can no longer use the phone, Mom can't work on her computer, and Dad can't finish cooking dinner. What's a family to do? When they go up to the roof to escape the heat, they find the lights--in stars that can be seen for a change--and so many neighbors it's like a block party in the sky! On the street below, people are having just as much fun--talking, rollerblading, and eating ice cream before it melts. The boy and his family enjoy being not so busy for once. They even have time to play a board game together. When the electricity is restored, everything can go back to normal . . . but not everyone likes normal. The boy switches off the lights, and out comes the board game again. Using a combination of panels and full bleed illustrations that move from color to black-and-white and back to color, John Rocco shows that if we are willing to put our cares aside for a while, there is party potential in a summer blackout.

This RF, RA, Caldecott Award winning picture book is written and illustrated by John Rocco. This children's book focuses on a family that is always too busy to stop and spend time with each other. Until, one night when the power on the block goes out: blackout. The family is forced to stop what they're doing and just be with each other. This book really teaches us the importance of family and communication.

MFlowers The link I'd like to associate with this post is to a YouTube video of John's personal read aloud of “Blackout.“ https://youtu.be/v2Tmov6gJus
That is a wonderful tool to use in the classroom. Not only are you adding technology and multimedia into the class (UDL 5.1) , you're also providing a visual for your EL students (EL strategy 17).
UDL 5.1: Use multiple media for communication
EL Strategy 17: Provide contextual support through audio visual

ToddSalerno I‘m intrigued by the theme of this book. When I read the description, I thought about a connection to having a sort of voluntary blackout day where students pledge to go the night without electronics. Could be a matter of having a book to read. Challenge students to experience a text to world connection. 4y
DrSpalding I love the image here with the author. One of your peers read this book as well and thought it would be a good read aloud during a weather unit and to make text to self connection when we experience blackouts during hurricane season. 4y

This colorful picture book shows a hot summer night in the city mixed with a power outage. The family and community come together and spend time with each other teaching people to enjoy things and be in the moment. This RF book would be good for a RA and is a Caldecott honor book. #ucflae3414sp21

Nrossi https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/blackout has several activities for this book. UDL 3.1 (activate or supply background knowledge) EL 4 (link lesson topic to students prior knowledge) 4y
Vanvlieta I really like this book! I think activating background knowledge could promote discussion prior to reading. Students could bounce off one another‘s comments about a time when power was lost & they had to play boardgames with their family or find some other game to play(we love text to self connections!). Great review!🙌🏼 4y
DrSpalding Several of your peers selected this award winner as well. Reading is fundamental is a quality resource you should continue to use throughout the program and as a support when you take over a classroom of your own. Better job of explaining/connecting the universal design and English learner strategy to your resource and teaching strategy. 4y

This Caldecott award winning book shares a story about a family who experiences a blackout in New York City. When all electronics and lights are turned off due to this blackout, the family learns what it‘s like to enjoy each other‘s company & spend quality time together without any distractions. This RF story would be best shared as a RA. I would implement the UDL principle 3.1(activate or supply background knowledge)

Vanvlieta & ESOL strategy 1 (use pre-reading activities to activate former knowledge). This could be done by asking the students if they have ever experienced a black out, or any time when their electricity went out, like during a Hurricane (if you teach in FL). #UCFLAE3414SP21 https://strategiesforspecialinterventions.weebly.com/activating-prior-knowledge1... 4y
DrSpalding You are correct that this is realistic fiction. I like the idea of using this during a weather unit and connecting the story to the real world. As you have learned throughout this course, making text to world connections is vital for comprehension. This is a helpful resource about activating prior knowledge which is considered best practice and you aligned it beautifully with your English learner strategy. 4y

“Blackout“ by John Rocco is a colorful picture book about the day that all the lights went out in the city and how families from all around decided to make the best of a bad situation & instead turned it into a positive by coming together to spend quality time with their loved ones & each other. This Caldecott award winner is best under RF with a UDL 9.3 regarding develop self assessment/reflection along with EL 4 students' prior knowledge.

Tinks “Blackout“ is a must read for all ages and a wonderful addition to all elementary classroom libraries. Has a great lesson to add to several classroom activities. #UCFLAE3414F19 5y

This book is a cute, Caldecott award winning realistic fiction book by John Rocco that emphasizes the importance of families coming together to spend time with each other. When a blackout occurs in the city, a family of four band together and realize that even though there is no light the whole family can still have fun. I would teach this book with RA. https://cdn.ymaws.com/www.ilfonline.org/resource/resmgr/blackout_-_copy.pdf #ucflae3414f19

CPettersen This book could be taught with UDL 7.2 to increase interest in the story as well as connect it back to the students‘ own lives as some of them may have experienced a blackout before and most of them will. Also ESOL 44 would be utilized to help with understanding of the text. 5y
DrSpalding Helping students make text to self connections or text to world connections is an important part of comprehension. 5y

Blackout by John Rocco is a RF story that would be a good IR. It is set in New York City and a blackout occurs. While the city is usually busy, things finally slowed down during the blackout. The illustrations are so beautiful that students would love to just sit and look at in a classroom library. https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/blackout #ucflae3414f19

cassandram this great site also provides a read aloud and guides for teachers and parents. The UDL principle I would use for this book is 4.1 varying the methods of navigation by using the link that has a read aloud of the book. I would also use ESOL strategy 30 of using diagrams and drawing aids which is provided in the site above. 5y
DrSpalding If you share your passion for the images and how they can tell the story, your students will sit and look at images with a new perspective. Caldecott winners are perfect for this. Excellent resource. 5y

Blackout by John Rocco was written in 2011. This book brings feelings of nostalgia as the reader looks back on the times when the power had gone out at their house and you‘d have to find ways to pass the time. The illustrations are also beautifully done and remind me of Van Gohs Starry Night.

This book provides a life long lesson that all the technology and electricity take away from the community aspect of a city. I really enjoyed the illustrations and the simplicity of the book. This was another one of my favorite books I‘ve read.

Blackout by John Rocco was written in 2011 and is an award winning book. This book was super interesting and had a good message. We are all so caught up in all the things we have to do, but sometimes we need something to happen to draw us out of it like the black our in this story. It kind of showed how everyone was having so much more fun without their electronics and I think today that is a huge part of our world. Good message for young minds.

This Caldecott winning book is a super sweet and sentimental story about how a family who gets caught up in the day to day rush is reminded of how great family time is once a blackout hits their city. I think this is a really sweet book that would appeal to a lot of different age groups! I loved this story.

The children award winning book, published in 2011 by John Rocco was amazing! This book hold the truths of today‘s society, and show the importance of interpersonal relationships- and how we can get so wrapped up in our own worlds. With technology being so prominent, the story shows that we need to slow down and focus on the things we may seem to take for granted. The illustrations also are very ‘Vincent VanGouh”-y as well, making for a great read

Blackout is RF. One night in the city the power goes out leaving the family with no television, no phones, and no computers. What are they going to do? They head to the roof and see that a block party has began...
I believe this would be a great Read Aloud.

The first few items that stood out to me consisted of the colors used and the texture of the pages. This was a very pleasant read that had a joyful, heartwarming storyline. This book is written for ages 4-8 and I believe that is just right. It has a comic book style to it (few words, blocks of scenes rather than whole page images). A fun read focusing on spending quality time with loved ones.

This book was written in 2011. The illustrations are extremely vibrant and have the urge to draw an audience in due to the cover. As the darkness approaches, the views of the bright stars appear. This helps the reader to continue the adventure in the dark setting. This book would be fun to read in a fort with all the lights off!

Well, this certainly changed my evening plans. 😕 I was going to cook dinner and read one of my new Christmas books. At least I have a new title available on my nook ready to go, and I guess I will be looking for someplace open for takeout.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Darn! Hopefully the power returns soon. 8y
Johanna414 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa it's been out for almost an hour and a half already- almost our whole county is out. It's also 85 degrees so I've got the baby camped out on the living room floor rather than upstairs without a fan. Electric company estimates another hour or two... 8y
