6:20 Man: A Thriller
6:20 Man: A Thriller | David Baldacci
7 posts | 11 read | 3 to read
A cryptic murder pulls a former soldier turned financial analyst deep into the corruption and menace that prowl beneath the opulent world of finance, in #1 New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci's new thriller. Every day without fail, Travis Devine puts on a cheap suit, grabs his faux-leather briefcase, and boards the 6:20 commuter train to Manhattan, where he works as an entry-level analyst at the city's most prestigious investment firm. In the mornings, he gazes out the train window at the lavish homes of the uberwealthy, dreaming about joining their ranks. In the evenings, he listens to the fiscal news on his phone, already preparing for the next grueling day in the cutthroat realm of finance. Then one morning Devine's tedious routine is shattered by an anonymous email: She is dead. Sara Ewes, Devine's coworker and former girlfriend, has been found hanging in a storage room of his office building--presumably a suicide, at least for now--prompting the NYPD to come calling on him. If that wasn't enough, before the day is out, Devine receives another ominous visit, a confrontation that threatens to dredge up grim secrets from his past in the army unless he participates in a clandestine investigation into his firm. This treacherous role will take him from the impossibly glittering lives he once saw only through a train window, to the darkest corners of the country's economic halls of power . . . where something rotten lurks. And apart from this high-stakes conspiracy, there's a killer out there with their own agenda, and Devine is the bull's-eye.

Finished in the nick of time! Suspenseful murder mystery. MC is an Army vet trying to get into finance in NYC. He gets roped into helping with an undercover investigation of the firm he works for, and people he knows keep getting murdered. I was totally wrong about who the killer was! Good voice artists.

Decent thriller/mystery. I'm not sure I enjoyed it enough to continue with further books (assuming there will be ones). The audio narration (multiple narrators) was particularly good.

I really liked this book. Travis Devine is a former Army Ranger now working in finance after leaving the Army under mysterious circumstances. When Sarah Ewes, a fellow employee whom he dated briefly, is found hanged in the office he decides to investigate since he obviously would be a suspect. Each chapter is like peeling an onion with lots of suspicious characters. It‘s a great escape read where you say “just one more chapter”.

bthegood you are right “one more chapter“ is a sign of a great read 🙂 2y

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝟔:𝟐𝟎 𝐌𝐚𝐧 is 𝐃𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐝𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐢's first foray into the financial world. He's a deviously clever storyteller employing short chapters, snappy dialogue, & an unrelenting pace. Physical action, shocking plot developments, & diabolical villains feature in a timely thriller about greed, corruption, conspiracy, & unbridled power.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⁣

I hope Baldacci builds on this character! Travis Devine is both fundamentally flawed and completely likable. The other characters were equally captivating and the plot was just complicated enough to make this a fantastic binge listen on a long road trip.
