This is a fun little fantasy / mystery read.

War between angels and demons in the old west left the precious material Divinity waiting to be mined. Celeste and her sister, half fallen, are making their lives here when her sister is accused of murder. It's up to Celeste to prove her sister's innocence.
It's an interesting novella. I wasn't as engaged with it as I was Black Sun, but I'll likely pick up the sequel to see where the world building goes.
It was the devil's hour on Aventum Angelorum, Goetia's own high holy day, and there was a black wind blowing off Tabor's mine. It slithered down the mountain past the places where the old gods of the continent had once held sway.

The easiest way to describe this novella is “murder mystery in an Old West town populated by descendants of angels & demons.” Roanhorse‘s world building is excellent as always & while the mystery itself is straight forward, the story resonates with thoughts about loyalty, family, perception, right/wrong, & how far we‘ll go to protect someone we love. This world begs for more stories & Roanhorse says she may return to it in the future. Yes please!
The only “bad” thing about this story by Roanhorse is that it‘s a novella — I wanted more! The Elite and the Fallen live together in Groetia, but in very different areas. Both are descendants of those that fell to Earth after the War of Heaven. Celeste and Mariel are Fallen, and sisters. Mariel has been charged with the murder of an Archangel; Celeste feels duty bound to save her. Great story. Angel politics!
This one hurt. I thought I was reading a fantasy murder mystery western romance and it is, but it‘s really about the people we‘re closest to and how we try to make them into who we need them to be.
I love her writing. She can build a complex world so quickly! This short novel did not give me enough time to get invested in the characters. That said I will read anything Rebecca Roanhorse writes. Good book just not great. 3 🌟 #52bookclub23 # authorwithsamename. @Clwojick @BookBelle84 @Jennifer8 @Librarybelle @triplem80 @AshleyHoss820 @LauraReads @KarenUK @britt_brooke @CarolynM @Smarkies @LeeRHarry @Read4life @Bluebird @squirrelbrain
I absolutely loved Rebecca Roanhorse's dark fantasy about the Fallen, descendants of demonkind, and the Elect, descendants of angels, set in alternate old west like world. She's a talented author and fantastic world builder. I'm really looking forward to reading more from her especially Black Sun, which I've heard so many positive things about.
I really love Rebecca Roanhorse‘s writing and her world building. Unfortunately this one was disappointing, mainly I think because it was novella length. It‘s lacking the time to build the world, rather it just throws you into the story and you are distracted trying to sort out the background of the World. It is a solid mystery, I just wish it had been longer. Great audiobook narration though! 3⭐️

This Western inspired alternate history with a unique take on angels and demons follows a half Fallen woman trying to prove her sisters innocence after she's found beside the body of a grisly murder scene. The lore Roanhorse builds is really interesting, and I hope she'll return to this world. It's a dark story set in a dark world and oh so good.
