The Masqueraders
The Masqueraders | Georgette Heyer
"A treasure beyond price. The Masqueraders is a wicked delight, worth more than its weight in gold." ?Anne Stuart Such a daring escape? Their infamous adventurer father has taught Prudence Tremaine and her brother Robin to be masters of disguise. Ending up on the wrong side of the Jacobite rebellion, brother and sister flee to London, Prudence pretending to be a dashing young buck, and Robin a lovely young lady. Could cost them both their hearts? Then Prudence meets the elegant Sir Anthony Fanshawe, and Robin becomes the mysterious hero of the charming Letitia Grayson, and in order to have what they truly want, the two masqueraders must find a way to unmask themselves without losing their lives? "What with elopements, rescues, duels, and cards, the story goes excitingly; and finally the magnificent but dubious father proves himself a Viscount. It is a picturesque and engaging story." ?THE SPECTATOR PRAISE FOR GEORGETTE HEYER: "Our Georgette Heyer display of the Sourcebooks reprints has been a huge success, not only to those early fans like myself, but to many new readers who appreciate her style and wit." Nancy Olson, Quail Ridge Books, Raleigh, NC "Reading Georgette Heyer is the next best thing to reading Jane Austen." Publishers Weekly "Wonderful characters, elegant, witty writing, perfect period detail, and rapturously romantic. Georgette Heyer achieves what the rest of us only aspire to." Katie Fforde WHAT READERS SAY: "Heyer manages to make us believe in this entertaining masquerade of the siblings posing each as a member of the opposite sex. Very true to the period indeed. Strongly recommended." "Such a great book-the ultimate romantic, swashbuckling, identity-swapping fantasy." "A must-read for Heyer fans." "Anyone who loves Shakespeare's Viola (and who thinks Shakespeare didn't give her enough to do in Twelfth Night) will enjoy Georgette Heyer's heroine Prudence." "I wore the cover out on this one almost forty years ago. Believe me, Ms Heyer stands the test of time!"

Thank you so much, Leah 😘 I definitely need more Georgette Heyer in my life right now. And I love the card and bookmarks, especially the Frank Lloyd Wright ones. Thanks for being such a thoughtful friend🙏💕

PS I don‘t mind the cover at all. I have a 1960s edition of False Colours that has a truly horrific cover. I will have to post a picture of it sometime😆

Rissreads Awwwwww 💛 10mo
LeahBergen You‘re so welcome! 😘 And you KNOW I‘m going to have to see that other cover now. 😆😆 10mo

I am posting one book per day from my extensive collection. No description. No explanation. Some will be old. Some will be new. Don't judge me. I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

I had several hours in the car yesterday and listened to quite a chunk of THE MASQUERADERS. But my old pulpy paperback, which I bought for Qa in Hay-on-Wye 15 years ago, is more photogenic than a screenshot of my audiobook, forsooth! (This one, unlike most Heyers, is set during the Jacobite rebellion, and I love the language.) #georgetteheyer

Soubhiville What a gorgeous photo? What kind of plant is in the background? 6y
howjessicareads It‘s a Texas Ranger @Soubhiville - they bloom in early July every year, our whole neighborhood is purple! 🙂 6y
Soubhiville Ah, ok! Are you in TX? I just assumed from your post you were in England! I thought it looked like that (I used to live in Austin!) but assumed it was a European doppleganger! 6y
howjessicareads @Soubhiville - nope, I‘m in Arizona. But we still call ‘em Texas Rangers. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 6y

An unexpected twist on the usual Heyer regency romance - a brother and sister are traveling undercover by masquerading as members of the opposite sex. It is so refreshing to find a heroine who rides, drinks, gambles, and doesn‘t back down from fighting duels, and a hero doesn‘t mind that circumstances have forced him to wear petticoats and flirt with other men at balls. Such a fun read!

Read Georgette Heyer a decade ago (Arabella) and found the costume drama wasn't for me. This time I'm here for the gender bending and swordplay!!! #audio #hoopla #georgian #swashbuckler

Girls dressed as boys! Scoundrels dressed as viscounts! Boys dressed as girls dressed as highwaymen! This Georgian romance plot is completely bananapants in the best way. However I struggled at first with the over-the-top writing and confusion - but if you push through and accept that some things are just gonna be confusing, it all comes together and is pretty delightful.

My October completions. Don't think there was a dud in the bunch, although The Masqueraders was my least favorite Heyer to date. It ended well but the first half almost made me abandon it...not her best work. The photo actually cut out a few, but I don't know how to edit it to fit. 🤔Oh well, here's most of them. 😁

Songsofhome That's quite a collection! 8y
Kimmiesuze I went to a book signing of As You Wish and heard Cary Elwes talk about filming The Princess Bride. He was so charming and funny. 8y
