pickLoosely based on the author‘s mother‘s experience Good night, Irene is about the Red Cross and their Clubmobiles. This was a completely new part of WWII to me and I can‘t get over the roll these women played in supporting our troops. This would have been a 5🌟 read except sometimes it read like a list of facts rather than story supported by fact. I‘d love to know more about these women. #BookedinTime

pickThe 1st half of the book I didn‘t care much for Irene and Dorothy, 2 American women who join the Red Cross in WWII to offer soldiers on the front relief with coffee, donuts and a kind word.
In this 1st half, the story didn‘t add much: they were doing just that. I felt the book could have started 200 pages later when the coffee business withdraws to the background and the devastating war takes over. A light pick.

This ended up being an easy pick for September #BookedinTime. I had hoped to read it this month for the official TOB Camp but decided to wait and use it for this prompt instead. It‘s gotten lots of love so far so I think I‘m in for a treat.
pickI‘ve been big on historical fiction here lately so I was so excited to listen to this audiobook. This is about women in the American Red Cross during the war and it was so good. It had me in tears at times and it was such a powerful story!

Very little has been written or documented about these brave & bold young women who volunteered to boost morale to the young men serving in Europe. pickI know a lot of readers are sick of WWII fiction but I personally love it! Just give me a compelling story that has even the smallest twist I haven‘t read before and I‘m probably hooked! I haven‘t read a story centered around the Red Cross “Donut Dollies” before but I found it fascinating. I loved that it was raw, gritty, and bittersweet at times. I also loved the author note that explained how personal the story was for his family. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
pickDuring WWII, women attached to the Red Cross worked near the front, serving coffee and donuts to the troops and flirting to cheer them up. Urrea‘s mother was one of these women, and this fictional story of two such women is his tribute to her experience. I heard him talk about this on a podcast and he‘s such a lovely man, it made me want to read everything he‘s written. This did not disappoint.

pickI attended a reading by Urrea a number of years ago, and I found him a compelling, delightful speaker. I loved this novel about the American Red Cross “Doughnut Dollies” during WWII. The story is inspired by the experiences of Urrea‘s mother. My dad served in the army in WWII, and Urrea gets the snappy dialogue just right. He also captures the “We can do it” tone of that generation. The writing is beautiful as always. Loved it.
Amazon is currently running a 3 for 2 deal. I‘m guessing it is US only but do not know for sure. These are my three picks. Other new releases that caught my eye (but I‘ve already purchased) were The Covenant of Water and The Wager and a few others. Just in case someone here felt the need to buy a book 😂
pickThis is the B&N book club pick for June. I LOVED this one! I must say the author did not shy away from the ugly moments of the war and this one had me laughing and crying. Highly recommend this one #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks
