A Family of Readers
A Family of Readers: The Book Lover's Guide to Children's and Young Adult Literature | Roger Sutton, Martha V. Parravano
7 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
A FAMILY OF READERS is the definitive resource for parents interested in enriching the reading lives of their children. Roger Sutton knows how and why children read. He must, as the editor in chief of THE HORN BOOK, which since 1924 has been Americas best source for reviews of books for young readers. But for many parents, selecting books for their children can make them feel lost. Now, in this essential resource, Roger Sutton and Martha V. Parravano, executive editor at the magazine, offer thoughtful essays that consider how books are read to (and then by) young people. They invite such leading authors and artists as Maurice Sendak, Katherine Paterson, Margaret Mahy, and Jon Scieszka, as well as a selection of top critics, to add their voices about the genres they know best. The result is an indispensable readers companion to everything from wordless board books to the most complex and daring young adult novels.

I credit my mum with raising a #booklover as she always encouraged reading in our house. She would read to all four of us every night! I‘m on the left in the photo and my sister Emily is on the right. #MarchInBooks

#AFavoriteHobby is reading! I even like to read about reading!
I will read in a house,
I will read with a mouse,
I will read in a box,
I will read with a fox,
I will read here or there
I will read anywhere!
Another hobby is coffee and collecting mugs from Indie bookstores like #toadhallbookstore in Massachusetts.

Wow! Thanks Littens! I love having a place to go where people get me. Once when I was on a road trip with my husband we broke down and I posted a pic of me reading on the side of the road. On Facebook everyone commented How Horrible blah blah. On Litsy you guys commented on my chucks knowing what an awesome opportunity it was to read a few chapters. Thanks! I need this!

LiteraryinLawrence Congrats on the milestone! I know, I feel the same about Litsy. It's a friendly corner of the internet. ☺️ 7y

Hoping to get some hints on how to get the little one interested in reading. I'd love for him to become as much of a bookworm as I am!

For a workplace book, I've chosen one that came from my workplace this summer (it was actually a gift on my last day as an intern at The Horn Book). Children's books are my passion, so I am looking forward to reading this for more insights and recommendations about great books for young readers. #somethingforsept #septphotochallenge

A fabulous collection of essays. Even reading this 6 yrs after its publication date, a time frame in which so many wonderful books have come out for children and young adults, I learned a lot, and my to-read pile grew and grew!
