I really wanted to love this but ugh. Great concept, but overall just bad. A good portion of the stories were just cut off, unfinished thoughts (my major complaint for stories/essays), and the majority of the rest were ‘I met someone really great, we loved all the same nerdy things… we broke up‘. Of the ones I got through, I connected with 2.

Just disappointing.

This is actually a nonfiction anthology about the the lives, the loves, the breakups, etc...of the contributors. Told in a mix of prose and comics, it is a diverse and inclusive collection of stories that lets readers know that they aren‘t alone in trying to make sense of this great big world and their place in it, something that is not always easy to do when navigating relationships, sexuality, gender, and life in general.

Since the weekend will be devoted to #C2E2 and I don‘t anticipate much time for reading, I‘m going to stick with short stories for now. This way no getting too invested in a book I don‘t want to put down when I know I‘m going to have to put it down...

This book is a collection of prose, comics and more. Certainly looks interesting!

This was a pretty mixed bag of an anthology of nonfiction prose and comics by geek girl creators about their experiences with love of all kinds. The range of topics as well as the contributors themselves are diverse and interesting, but the strength of each individual piece is all over the place so as a collection it feels really uneven.

This anthology of romance-focused nonfiction contains some great pieces that delve deep into what makes relationships tick. Unfortunately, it's also got a hefty measure of purple prose, plenty of narrative structures too complex for such short pieces to sustain, and a number of universal truths that aren't, well, universally true.

I side-eye the editor's decision not to include contributor bios, too, and to ask a romance-hater to write the intro.

xicanti Also of note: you'll find this in the comics section, but it contains far more prose essays than comics. 6y
Mimi28 I bought this and was a little disappointed too. 6y
xicanti @Mimi28 I had such high hopes when I found it on the shelf. Sigh. 6y

I had to bail 🙈
The collection is filled with talented writers and lovely illustrations but it just isn't for me.

Today's #RiotGrams How I Read. TBH I read in bed without clothing on but since THAT picture certainly isn't happening, here's Hei-Hei instead.

This anthology about geek girls and their relationships was an interesting reading experience. It's a mix of short stories and comics. The artwork is beautiful. Some of the stories were fantastic; some were dull. Overall, I enjoyed it, but no need to race to your nearest book buying facility.

I think this beauty is gonna be my last one for May. Closing out a really great reading month.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa This one is sitting in my TBR pile too, it looks really good! 7y
WhatDeeReads @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It's high and low. Every story has a different creator, so some are better than others. I'm enjoying it so far. 7y

I had a Barnes & Noble coupon.

I had money.

I have a new book.

I think it was a fair exchange.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds perfect to me! 7y

DISCLAIMER: I'm reviewing comics by Jenn Woodall, whose work happens to be featured in TSLOGG (which is also fab). I spent part of this evening reading Marie & Worrywart, a comic about dealing with anxiety, and the first 2 volumes of Magical Beatdown, a comic about a girl who violently & fatally exacts justice on cat-callers. I just realized that I get to count these for #ReadHarder #micropress. Can't wait to read more of her work! More info 👇

LindsayReads Woodall's work can be found at www.jennwoodall.com // Her work is published by Friendship Edition Press, which appears to meet the criteria for a micropress! 7y
LindsayReads Particularly loved Magical Beatdown...the colors, the violence, the profanity, the bonkersness, all of which could be a deterrent for some readers but for me means I have more to track down. 7y
vivastory Note to self 📝: Add bonkersness to adjective list for describing books in the future 😀 7y

I read a lot this month (when I get stressed I read) - so it was a bit difficult to narrow down the #bestofnovember... but these were all fantastic! And all but one fit for #nonfictionnovember as well 😁#photoadaynov16

Reviewsbylola Henrietta Lacks has stuck with me since I read it years ago! 7y
Bloomingjen Me too, Reviewsbylola. Her cells are still being used in labs across the country. 7y
Lindy Snow White and You Can't Touch My Hair were 5 star reads for me this month too. 👍 7y
GlitteryOtters I see 2 of my top 3 favorites from the month! I really loved both You Can't Touch My Hair & the cookbook. 💕 7y

I confess: I went into this thinking it was more along the lines of what KS DeConnick admitted to in the Foreword...otherwise I might not have been as eager to read it, seeing as romance-y books aren't usually my thing. BUT! I found this delightful in how it addressed *so* many issues particular to falling in and out of love as a geek girl. I definitely feel less alone, which is its explicit goal.

So what do you do when one cat is curled into the crook of your knee and the other cat is leaning against your other side? You take advantage of the cuddle time and finish this fantastic anthology written for geeky women by geeky women. So many of these stories resonated with me. I'm glad this book turned out to be the opposite of what I originally thought, cause it was exactly what I needed right now.

I'm loving this non-fiction anthology of essays and comics! So glad I picked it up instead of waiting for my library to get it.

Ruri_kaichou I bought this on a whim at the bookstore and I'm glad I did! 7y
Eyelit @Ruri_kaichou me too! Although I didn't read the back closely enough and thought I was getting something similar to Fresh Romance (which I loved) - this wasn't that and I'm glad cause I love it even more! 7y

I backed this on Kickstarter and it was money more than well spent. I read it in one sitting but I feel like I need to do one work a day now, just to feel it all properly again. So affirming to read about yourself like this.
