The List of Suspicious Things
The List of Suspicious Things | Jennie Godfrey
13 posts | 10 read | 16 to read
A SENSATIONAL DEBUT FROM HUTCHINSON HEINEMANN IN 2024 'What if we decided to try and find him?' 'What on earth are you on about?' she said. 'How are we going to catch the Yorkshire Ripper, when the police haven't even managed to?' I sighed. Her questioning my ideas was a recent and unwelcome element to our friendship. But it was a valid point. How would we catch him? We needed some sort of plan, a way of gathering clues and putting them into order. I thought about what the policeman had said about structure, and then about Aunty Jean and her notebook, and the idea I had hardened like toffee. I knew exactly what we needed to do. 'We'll make a list,' I said. 'A list of the people and things we see that are suspicious. And then . . . And then we'll investigate them.' The List of Suspicious Things is a tender and moving coming of age story about family, friendship and community. Sometimes the strongest connections are found in the most unlikely of places.

I loved this book and its characters so much, thank you @squirrelbrain for sending it my way! I've seen it marketed as a mystery, which I think does a disservice to the book - if you're expecting mystery, you may be disappointed. This is a poignant coming of age, set in a small Yorkshire town in 1979/80; the mills have closed, Thatcher is coming to power, and the Ripper has the county on edge. Cont'd in comments

TheKidUpstairs And 12 year old Miv is struggling to make sense of it all, and of why her mom won't speak, and why her dad wants to move "down South." With her best friend Sharon, she sets out to solve the Ripper case, hoping that will allow her family to stay in Yorkshire. On the lookout for suspicious behavior, she begins to unravel the secrets of her little corner of Yorkshire, and finds the best and the worst aspects of small town life hiding in the shadows. 2w
TheKidUpstairs Godfrey does a wonderful job of bringing the Yorkshire setting to the page, but in a way that is accessible to international readers as well. Turns of phrase and slang are easily decoded through context, and many aspects of the small community life are pretty universal. 2w
TheKidUpstairs Miv is so perfectly, beautifully 12. She is not the precocious, too smart for her town protagonist you often find in books solving a mystery. She is naive and fumbling through life. Godfrey did a beautiful job of capturing that age, the innocence of thinking you are far more mature than you really are. And the messy world of adults that is just our of her understanding is created in varying, genuine shades of grey. 2w
squirrelbrain I‘m so glad you loved it! I was worried it wouldn‘t draw you in as much, because I grew up in Yorkshire (although I‘m a bit younger than Miv) but you seem to have liked it as much as I did. 2w

I loved this sweet story with fierce adorable characters. It‘s more about family friendship and love than it is about the Yorkshire ripper. The innocence and pure determination of Miv and her friend Sharon. Omar and Ish. Helen. Aunty Jeannie ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Growing up a teenage girl in 70s was like another world. Gen Z take note. I found the ending unnecessarily tragic but overall a wonderful debut from this writer. Unique.

A very soft pick for me, which I feel sad about because I wanted to love it. Set in the 1979/80, year when I was approaching my teenage years like the main character, the drawing of life at that time was good, and it touches on a number of serious subjects, but it also feels like it‘s plucked straight from Joanna Cannon‘s The Trouble With Goats and Sheep, plus I‘m uncomfortable with the hook on which the story has been hung

I adored this gem 💎 of a book 📖 a real trip down memory lane for me growing up in the 70s the nation gripped by the hunt for the serial killer “the Yorkshire ripper” a sad reminder of the prejudices of people and how racism & domestic violence were so prevalent, I highly recommend it , will be one of my favourite books 📚 of the year . However I do think 🤔 perhaps overseas readers may struggle to grasp the social setting

TrishB Yeah I loved it too- but agree it is very U.K./time specific. 7mo

At bath (uk) literature festival last weekend we went to a wonderful interview with the delightful Jennie Godfrey what a lovely 🥰 lady , same age as me and I grew up in this period when the book is set , i remember the nation being gripped with finding the riper. Because of the social history setting (how sadly racist & sexist 70s Britain was) I think this book will appeal more to the uk audience it will be one of my favourite books of the year

TieDyeDude So fun! Glad you enjoyed the event. 7mo
Gissy Great photo 👌I want to visit Bath someday. It seemed was a great experience ♥️♥️♥️ 7mo

Bailedbailed

Oh dear ! #Unpopularopinion This is a bail for me. I just couldn‘t get into it, and the writing wasn‘t for me. There are some great reviews here on Litsy , but I had to bail out.

Tamra That‘s disappointing! I had this one stacked too. 8mo
Ruthiella Oh well, on to the next one which will be hopefully a winner! 🤞 8mo
Cathythoughts @Tamra It may well work for you. Not for me 😬 Thats where I find the kindle samples are so helpful. I did buy this book though. Hopefully I‘ll find a good home for it. It‘s a pretty book ❤️😁 (edited) 8mo

Cathythoughts @Ruthiella Yes. Onwards and hopefully upwards ❤️❤️❤️ 8mo
LeahBergen That‘s too bad. I was initially curious about this and then read a bit of it online and decided it might not be for me either! 8mo
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen I know ! That‘s the way it goes. We do pretty well here on Litsy for books though 😁❤️❤️ I did love the whole idea of this one … anyway .. onwards and upwards. I‘m thinking of Fayne .. not sure I‘m ready for such a long book. I‘m always up for another thriller 🤣 I‘ll have fun deciding X June for our next Persephone x 8mo
BarbaraBB Another bail. I hear you 😀. I just started another John Marrs 🤷🏻‍♀️ 8mo
Cathythoughts @BarbaraBB I might try another Marrs too 😁👍🏻 8mo
EverydayImReading Oh no @cathythoughts I loved it. I was contemplating it as my pick for the book club but now I won‘t 😳 2mo

Nostalgic, but tackling some dark subjects. Had a tear in my eye at the end.

It‘s Yorkshire in 1979 and 12 year old Miv overhears her father talking about moving away, which Miv is convinced is due to the Yorkshire Ripper murders so, along with her best friend Sharon, she decides to try to catch him.

Along the way she encounters many other dirty neighbourhood secrets, including racism and domestic violence, so it‘s not an easy read but I still loved it.

#netgalley Published in the UK 15th Feb.

squirrelbrain I grew up in Yorkshire and, although I‘m a bit younger than Miv, I still recall being petrified of the Yorkshire Ripper. Interesting though that some of the Yorkshire dialect (one word in particular - laiking ) wasn‘t used at all where we lived, but you could place Miv almost to the nearest town (I think Wakefield 🤔) by that dialect and some of the things mentioned in the book. 12mo

#Sundayfunday no, the setting is Yorkshire during the late 70s and early 80s, when the Yorkshire Ripper was active! The book was a huge disappointment, sadly.

BookmarkTavern That‘s disappointing! Hope your next read is better! 1y
